Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

You see what I just told you yesterday? Driving my organization skills nuts! This is only one of their looks, they will of course be having more costumes.

NOTE: Leads’ Posters will be added here as they come out. LASTE UPDATED: 1/28/16.

Yang Mi as Bai Qian. From my understanding, she’s the female monarch of the nine-tailed Fox Clan?

Mark Zhao looking quite beautiful as Ye Hua with the laziest hairstyle. Lol. Straight, sleek black hair. I think you beat She Jie Jie. Your hair looks so clean and shiny *touch touch*

    Thanks Kaptain!

Yang Mi looks beautiful and quite ethereal in the stills, let’s see how it translates in motion.

Mark Zhao somehow reminds me to… Snape? *RIP Alan Rickman, he’ll be always missed*

Oh Lenje… Snape… He will be a lasting figure in the Harry Potter’s world, along with Richard Harris. Definitely will be missed.

    • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

Lol @lenje. I actually agree…Mark looks pretty good as Ye Hua in his profile pic, but honestly his frontal pic really does remind me of Snape. Idk. Maybe I’m being too critical, but Yang Mi and Mark don’t really look like what I imagined Bai Qian and Ye Hua to look like. Maybe it’s all the pretty fanart out there, so I already have a picture of them in my mind, and YM/Mark are not that picture.

      • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

I agree with you cuz they’re not what I pictured either, especial Mark Zhao.

Yang Mi looks good in period but her styling here is way too plain for a Goddess of her age and status (according to the story)

        • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

I think going for simple styles fit their character? My impressions was that it’s their aura that tells about their status rather than appearance. But they could choose better materials to make the simple styles as elegant, rich.

        • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

Yeah she looks good, but her white outfit is a little too flat. It’s not the color, more like the design, just makes her look either like a lady-in-waiting or a small fairy will very little cultivation. It’s not that she should be elaborately dressed, but Yang Mi in these pics simply doesn’t have the aura. Bai Qian is supposed to seem very cold and aloof to people who don’t know her well, esp since she blocked the memories of her mortal trial. She’s the Qingqui queen, disciple of the legendary Mo Yuan, etc.

        • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

@Julianne I agree Yang Mi doesn’t have that aura as Bai Qian and in the pictures she looks like a common fairy.

Although if it wasn’t for the narrative that said about her title and her attitude while visiting Jiuchongtian, I would think Bai Qian is just a small fairy not a high deity lol. Idt she even has a lady maid in Qinggiu. She did the cleaning herself (before that fairy that she saved who later married Zang Pi, that eventually lead to her betrothal with Yehua). About her being Mo Yuan’s disciple, i don’t think many ppl knows since she’s supposed to be a guy.

I do wonder if the pics above is for Bai Qian’s character, or SuSu. I feel like it’s more Susu bc of the simple white robe.

        • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

          My biggest gripe is
          1. the aura of the characters just aren’t there
          2. the cloths/material look like curtain cloths instead of what Gods should wear (even if the style is simple, the cloths should be of great quality)

    • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

Alan Rickman’s portrayal is one of my favorite things about the Harry Potter franchise and he is one hell of an awesome actor. RIP he’ll always be missed 🙁

LOL honestly my first reaction on seeing Mark Zhao’s pic here is “OMG since when did the young version of Snape with straightened non-greasy hair hop into the 3 Lives universe??!”

It’s the hair and the all black shiny getup … TBH Mark Zhao’s styling here doesn’t look anything like what an ancient Chinese God should look like. It’s way too Western and he looks like he’s wearing a black tux with a black cloak/cape on top and he’s going to a Halloween/masquerade dinner rather than an ancient Chinese immortal LOL

Yang Mi’s look is OK cuz at least she looks like an ancient Chinese beauty. Her styling here is too plain for a Goddess of her status (according to character) but at least she looks nice!

      • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

I’m all for creative styling and all but it pisses me off when stylists don’t take the story setting and background into account. If the story is set in ancient China, then the clothes, props, etc. should reflect that. While Westernized art styles are really pretty, they shouldn’t be used if it doesn’t fit the setting.

This is one my gripes with dramas like Hua Qiangu cuz not only do the makeup and hairstyling suck, the props and set designs are too Westernized for an ancient Chinese story. FFS they even had an international chess set in Bai Zihua’s room, and Zixun’s palace/room looked like a Rivendell ripoff.

It’s like, Japanese decor is gorgeous and all but if a story like Lord of the Rings made their warrior helmets look like samurai helmets then it’d just look weird. (Thranduil’s swords are an exception because while they’re derivative they’re not actually samurai swords)

This is why Nirvana in Fire is awesome because the production company actually researched all the ancient customs, costumes, props, etc. of the specific Chinese period they set the story in and then constructed the rooms, props, weapons, costumes, etc. from scratch just for the drama. They got consultants with specialist/historical expertise on the job and the the production team tried their best to be as historically accurate as possible. This attention to detail really shows, especially upon repeat viewings!

      • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

The Nirvana production team actually built Mei Changsu’s lodgings instead of using the available sets in Hengdian cuz those existing beautiful sets weren’t constructed in the same architectural style as the historical period Nirvana was set in. Now THAT’s dedication!

      • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

I completely agree with you about the so-called ‘creative liberties’ costume designers have been taking with Chinese period dramas. We should write to these production companies and complain!

        • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

Rather than writing to the production companies, find like-minded folks on weibo, and make it a trending hashtag. It will reach them much quicker, and there’s higher possibility they’ll actually listen. 🙂

        • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

@lenje: Could the trending hashtag in English be read in China? Wouldn’t their weibo site be more effective?

        • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

No point in getting all worked up over it cuz all the designs, etc. are contracted out to the pros of the industry anyway. The “professionals” of the industry have their own ideas and they’re gonna push for what they think is the best rather than pay attention to us pipsqueaks who aren’t even “professionals”, cuz what do we know about “design” if we’re just laypeople, right?

It’s like Fashion Week and all the stuff that’s on the runways. None of it is wearable by ordinary folks but designers don’t care because they’re the professionals and we laypeople don’t know any better (according to them)

        • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

I mean we can laugh about how crap it looks but it’s not gonna affect how much profit they make so it’s not like they give a shit

        • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

And another even more important consideration is that what “we” consider look good or bad is VERY different to what the Chinese general public think is good or bad. Cdramas cater to their public (which is their main audience + source of income), not to us.

    • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

I say the hair looks like he’s cosplaying Sha Jie Jie hehehe.

  2. 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

Does anyone else think Mark’s profile pic looks so much like Yang Yang?

    • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

They copied the style of Yang Yang’s profile pic but IMHO Mark Zhao doesn’t look anything like YY (not even in profile sorry) … I probably looked at too many pictures of YY hahaha 🙂

    • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

I honestly hope YY + Liu Yifei’s movie version will have way better styling than this cuz TBH I don’t like the styling for this drama (based on what promo stills are out so far)

      • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

Totally agree, but also kind of frustrated cuz while they have promo pics of LYF and YY, there aren’t any character stills yet, so we don’t know what the characters are going to look like.

        • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

Apparently they’re taking their sweet time with the styling for YY and Liu Yifei cuz it’s a movie and everything and also with the plagiarism allegations against the original novel, even if the movie gets made it won’t come out anytime soon

  3. 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

Satisfied with Yang Mi’s! Very elegant and ethereal. Mark Zhao though…

  4. 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

    Cries…huhuhuhu

Why do they look so plain?! I really wanted to see beautiful clothes. All those fan arts where so beautiful…

Yang Mi still looks good but doesn’t have that goddess feel yet.

  5. 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

Nope, Mark Zhao still isn’t Ye Hua.

Yang Mi looks good here but that deity aura still isn’t there.

They really should have invited YY and Crystal do the drama version.

  6. 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

I like Yang Mi’s hair. I only read the trans but I remember that both Bai Qian and Ye Hua are described as simple in their appearance. Bai Qian especially because she doesn’t even come out from Qingqiu no one (except important high deities) knows how she looks like. I still can’t see Mark Zhao as Yehua but I think he fits for Mo Yuan.

Speaking of, since it’s 50 eps, I wonder if they’re going for triangle for MY-BQ-YH since it was implied MY really cared about BQ. Also Zhi Yan and the 4th brother, I expect lots of bromance (i think there were vibes that they were more haha)

    • 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

I don’t know if we’ll get nice costumes and colors from the two leads . Ye Hua only ever wears black lol and Bai Qian I can’t remember if she dresses up.

  7. 30 thoughts on “Yang Mi and Mark Zhao’s first posters for Peach Blossoms

I may be in the minority but I much prefer yang mi than lyf. I find lyf boring and pretty much unwatchable and tend to avoid her movies / dramas.

Ah mark, what can I say? Hoping he will deliver in the drama but I’ll watch him in anything so… haha.
