Saying Goodbye to Jung Hwan (Ryu Jun Yeol) in 1988

The last season, I only followed Oh My Venus and Answer Me 1988 in kdramaland, one filled me with crazy unreal physical chemistry, while the latter one moved me to tears again and again. But when you love hard, you fall just as hard.

These two. The Kim Family really broke my heart with their dynamics. Jung Hwan’s best and fatal flaw is the quiet way he supports and loves them and his friends unquestionably, putting everyone’s feelings above his own. He slays me in all ways possible…. 🙁

My last Answer Me series. This is the last time I’m giving my heart to the sadistic writer behind the Answer Me franchise. Did anyone get triple crown? I only watched a couple of episodes of 1994 and knew that Trash would win. Sadly, only two crowns in my collection. Heh. I loved and loved Answer Me 1988 a lot for the family aspect of the show. I cried so much tears for each and everyone in Ssang Mun Dong. Such a group of lovely and kind people – strongest point of the whole series. But when it comes to the love triangle, much are left to be desired. Jung Hwan is the slowest and most frustrating SLOWPOKE IN THE WORLD. I have a trophy made for him and all. Everything he does for Deok Sun is never shown to her. Hence, I can’t fault Deok Sun either for her ultimate choice because Taek is the most adorable puppy ever. And he shows that he loves her. I blame the writer for my suffering. She promised there won’t be a husband-hunting in the series! I trusted her but then she began her game of dropping clues and feeding bread crumbs from the beginning to the very end. VERY END. To prolong the mystery, you kept Deok Sun’s feelings a secret for freaking 18 episodes. That was too much and too late me to turn around. Not to mention the krappy ending Jung Hwan got in the end, no mention of anything, he and Dong Ryong deserve better! He basically didn’t share another scene with Deok Sun in the last two episodes, which I will never watch! Lol.

For that, I can understand the rage many felt and still feel. We were there, we were aware of all his little pained moments. He had the head start and filled our hearts completely with his doofus expressions and rough way of handling his blossoming crush. So of course it killed us when nothing came of those but relentless heartache. Misunderstandings came, stayed, and became moldy.

Goodbye Kim Jung Hwan. I hate you!

girl, i told you not to fall for jung hwan cause….. i did too. =(

both guys were shippable with deok sun but their friendship is also precious. i hated how the ending came. it felt very artificial like their usual bait and switch trope, especially when they showed the kid flashback of ds and taek… basically saying first love always wins!! they thought they were being “fresh” but it ended up not that way for me. that flashback was just like another other kdramas with the first love (this time from taek) ending up together. why cant NOBODY IN KDRAMALAND MOVE FROM THEIR FIRST LOVE?!!

Dong Ryong…poor boy was the least well-developed of the gang and no mention in the end too, like JH. such an unsatisfied ending. for me.

they got me good this time. chilbongie what? lols.

Are you surprised? Love when you’re 9-12 is the best! We remember every detail! We Kdrama kids do! Lol.

Honestly I feel like I’m missing out. I’ve yet to date anyone in my high school years. Someone please tell me I’m not the only one. I feel like I’m the kind of person who could go through college without having dated anyone.

Lol. Juli. I hope you caught my sarcastic tone when I wrote love between young kids is the best. It’s not (to me). Just mocking Kdrama tropes (happens more often now in Cdramas too.)

You’re not missing out on anything. Only a few people are exceptions to the rule, meaning that they skip the many heartbreaks and get to love their one true love in their lifetime.

I was utterly shocked at the turn of events in 1988. Up until about Episode 15, I was so sure that Junghwan was the end-game. I get that the writer wants the audience to be surprised by plot twists, but it just leaves such a sour feeling inside of me.

That said, I was ironically on the Taek-Deok Sun ship for most of the drama, and I completely understand why they might be attracted to each other. JH was written as a character who had chances but let them slip away, and Taek as the guy who took action. I just never expected Taek to end up as the husband.

But I suspect the author originally meant JH to be the husband. Even the mannerisms of the modern-day husband first fit JH. Sigh.

I’m so abused by the writer, I never want to return. It’s interesting how you were on the other ship. I think I lost hope for Jung Hwan when Taek gave up. I was like great, now nothing is going to happen. Then…NOTHING REALLY HAPPENED. *slaps self*

I think Taek being a Baduk player helps shape his loveline. He knows when to strike and swoop in for the kill. He deserves his happiness.

Jung Hwan was sooooo slow in everything he was doing @_@ While I wanted to root him at first, he started to become annoying by the end. I mean, he liked her during the whole drama and still didn’t make any move. I mean, come on… That’s just torture to both you and the audience. Taek was so cute so I am happy they ended together ^^

Hence he gets the Slowesttttpoke trophy from me. Lol.

NOOOOOOOOO! wHY? WHy? Why did I press play on that fanvid. Got me all welling up more tears for the couple that never came to be. I was heartbroken to his very last appearance in the show. I never wanted this series to end, and even though it did end with a sour note on my part, I still am dumb enough to believe in the next Answer Me series the writer will definitely offer some sort of solace to JH+DS shippers everywhere in a cameo crossover appearance. SHE BETTER! “If you build it, they will come”.

I’m sorry to say, I couldn’t finish AM94. Pardonne-moi, Chilbongie and Trash Oppa fans. I doubt I will ever finish the show. I love AM88 however I still must renounce my utmost love for AM97. If there could be a massive reunion somewhere down the line of the tenth season gathering all the AM-OTP couples of each predecessor then I’d die happy.

Agreed. Answer Me 1997 keeps it short and sweet, my favorite of the three. I never finished 1994 either, but I was on Trash team all the way. xD

I ain’t coming no more! She broke the bridge I was on. I drowned.

You say this NAO… you know you have a weak heart for the underdogs. So, this show proves it over and over again by selecting these unknown prodigies which shake our hearts and our faith that pulls us in and throws tearjerk moments you have to watch again, and again.

C’mon Kappy. Brave the eye or wink of any storm… join me. Mwahahaha!

I love reply 88 so much. I think from the first hint it said that taek is the husband. The husband is smoking, left handed and likes to wear thin clothes. From that hint it conclude that taek was the husband. I think the writer not change the script. But i like all the cast in reply 88. They wrap all the story beautifully. But so sad jh character ended like that. The writer suppose to write the happy ending for junghwan. But overall reply 88 is the best drama in 2015. But you can watch them all again in youth of flower with na pd. My fave variety show pdnim. They will suffer in africa with the evil na pd. Hehhe…

The writer promised no husband-hunting, her dropping hints that could refer to both boys – didn’t sit well with me.

But yes, I’m waiting to see them get tortured by Na PD!
