The one time I wished she wouldn’t take on a drama…then she does. She’ll playing the role of sleeping beauty Bi Yao, you know the role that no one wanted?! Bi Yao isn’t the main lead in the book but she gathers the most sympathy because she (and her body) basically disappears once she falls into the coma after saving the hero.

But the point is Bi Yao DOESN’T look like a Demon Lord’s daughter (in the novel). She’s supposed to look sweet and cute and stuff, so in that sense the stylists are working in the right direction except they should’ve made the bangs more wispy maybe…
If anything Li Yifeng’s the one that’s supposed to look demon-like. His Xiaofan is supposed to look plain in the beginning but when he transforms into Gui Li he’s supposed to look more like Sha Jiejie (LOL)

Zhao Liying is billed as the lead actress but in the original story, Xueqi (Yang Zi’s character) is actually the female lead. They changed the story so that Biyao is the female lead over Xueqi but in the novel Xueqi is the one who marries Xiaofan and has a son with him as well as becoming a Sect leader. Biyao doesn’t have much screen time in the original story (she’s in a coma for most of it come on) and she’s more like a catalyst to turn Xiaofan over to the Dark Side than anything else.
The author of the novel wrote Xueqi based on his wife so yeah, it’s pretty obvious who’s supposed to be the lead, but the drama production team changed Biyao to be the female lead cuz otherwise Zhao Liying would’ve refused the role, and with the filming already starting, the production company was desperate for someone to fulfill the role.

LOL Xiaofan as the main character is like Anakin Skywalker except Xiaofan gets a happy ending and lives a good life with his true love and has a son who becomes the protagonist of the sequel novel (which I didn’t read cuz it’s nowhere as good as the original Zhuxian novel)

she’s billed as the lead because it’s a compensation the production have to pay for insisting that she plays the role. plus, nobody wants to take the role after a big shot like Baby didn’t want it anymore. lols. the production crew was desperate to find an equally big star to fill the shoes.
her character will still have limited scenes, as the story requires that much integrity. she knows she will be sleeping soon. XD

Various sources on weibo have now reported that this is NOT her official look and that she has NOT begun filming for real, including the actor who played one of the sect leaders in Hua Qian Gu (he appears again in this new drama). Fans are guessing that she just went to try out a couple scenes or something — and that maybe this is a single look she gets for a single storyline. The official drama also notes that her character will have lots of different style-ings.
Not sure how comforted by this I am, because I also didn’t want her to take this role — she should do another modern drama! — but just adding in the updated info.

I know Weibo is saying that but I don’t believe it because the filming for this series is on such a tight schedule they split the whole cast and crew into 4 teams so that they could do parallel shootings. Also Zhao Liying and Li Yifeng have SO MANY activities (besides filming) that they have to do so they can’t afford to waste a day of shooting just to “test” things. ZLY is fitting the shooting for this series in between the shooting for Old Nine Gates so wasting a valuable day of shooting just for testing doesn’t make sense.
But yes, she will have different looks in this series because the styling team planned different looks for her, just like in Ancient Sword where all the characters changed their looks every now and then so I’m not too worried about her look in the series. I think the bangs are just temporary and she’ll have a different look in no time.

I hope her fans don’t end up going at it with Yang Zi’s fans. I really like them both and would hate to see that turn into a new fandom rivalry. But I think it might be inevitable given that both of them already have strong CP fandoms with Wallace huo….
In terms of her career, her roles in both 老九门 and 电波 are both pretty limited and should be ending soon, so in some ways, it’s a great strategic move to fit in this drama, which will obviously have gigantic ratings thanks to LYF and the TFBoys, given that her 楚乔 drama has been pushed back on filming with the lack of a male lead.
As someone on tieba said, she can’t be the full lead in everything she does — and maybe she’s trying to lineup a full plate of projects now so that she can take a break later next year!

As for ZLY, I also agree that she can’t be in major roles in everything because that would just wear her out!
I see her role as Biyao as something more like a bit of a break – good credits + recognition + cash while taking it relatively easy (compared to her other more labor intensive roles)

This whole “who gets lead billing” thing seems to be really picking up steam. I’ve seen it mentioned as an issue in at least 3-4 different movies/dramas in the last couple days. Maybe all of the shows need to start taking a cue from Hollywood and just do the whole “actors listed in order of appearance’ thing.

@ zlidia: I totally don’t get the whole bickering over billing order cuz I’m used to seeing the whole “Cast in Order of Appearance” or “Cast in Alphabetical Order” thing from Hollywood movies 🙂
It’s also the way traditional Hong Kong movies or shows or theatrical plays are usually billed, in order of appearance with a special note saying “Cast billing not in order of importance but in order of appearance”
My aunt works in theater and she says that’s how they bill their productions to avoid bickering amongst the actors 🙂

Perhaps the production team wants to make Zang Zi looks good and therefore gives ZLY that ugly looking hairdo.

I like Zhao liying but she has taken too many lead roles that I kind of getting tired of it. As for this drama, I’d like to see Yang Zi as the lead female not ZLY.
