First trailer for Les Interprètes with Yang Mi and Huang Xuan

I have to say, I didn’t have interest in this drama but as I read reviews from novel fans, I think I will tune in after all. With all the elves, time-traveling, and demons running around in dramaland, it’s nice to have a normal modern drama (yunno, as far as I can see from the trailer, Lol.) I like that the genre is new to cdramaland and the trailer keeps it short and sweet without any physical violence, except for the brief part where Huang Xuan almost pokes Yang Mi in the eye. I wonder whether they have to re-shoot that scene several times to get it right.

In addition, it feels more grounded than your usual fare. Looking good.

Stills:

Synopsis that I translated: Based on a novel written by Miao Juan, Les Interprètes follows aspiring graduate of the French language, Qiao Fei (Yang Mi), who dreams of becoming a famous translator. Her education in Paris puts her right in a college where she chances upon a professional French translator, Cheng Jia Yang (Huang Xuan), and the two start their mentorship on the wrong foot. She earns his praise when she continuously overcomes his challenges and the two slowly but surely develop feelings towards each other. When everything seems to go smoothly, problems arise one after another. He’s the dream boyfriend in the hearts of all female students but no one knows he is suffocating under the arrangements of his family. He hides his silent resistance against their wishes beneath a calm, serious mask. She’s a poor heroine of the normal sorts, saddled with a debt-ridden father. Both have been hurt before in love so they are careful to jump over hurdles for their budding romance. Will their steady love beats all the odds against them?

Watch to find out!

Is this Huang Xuan’s first drama as the male lead? The quality of this drama looks really good. Can’t wait to see Yang Mi back on the small screen!

He’s also the lead in The Imperial Doctress with Liu Shi Shi (getting the girl) and some movies.

I also like how this drama looks. It’s been so long since I last saw Yang Mi in a drama. Her movies are forgettable and bland.

Ah, no wonder I found his face familiar…

Right? Though YM’s latest movie The Witness was quite good. Got praises for her acting as well.

Get the girl’s love, but loses the throne, and dies early, so not exactly lead. Think Hu Ge in Sound of the Desert.

Totally agree about YangMi. If you’re going to leave drama-land for movies, at least do good ones. She’s not new to movies anymore either. It’s been a while, she should be able to secure good roles by now. So many mediocre movies/performances on her resume.

Leads die all the times when I used to watch wuxia in the past so leads dying doesn’t bother me much. Dying doesn’t mean he’s not a lead.

Hu ge’s character is awesome. He volunteered to die again and again for shandong if they want him again. Who wouldn’t? Performance of a lifetime.

Her plan is to first build, stabilize and secure her popularity in movies by accepting any roles, which will then be useful when it’s time for her to choose good roles. And she’s basically doing it recently with The Witness which was a great role for her.

Getting the girl doesn’t mean he’s lead either. And Imperial Doctress is far from a wuxia.

Hu Ge is so filial. He even with TG he would always sort of end up mentoring all the newbies. LoL.

I guess we can agree to disagree. In any palace (excuse the error of wuxia, lol) dramas for me, getting the heroine is the lead, however tragic your life might be (Like HG in Nirvana.)

If I get mentored by HG, I’d be ready to die 9x! XD

Yes, let’s agree to disagree. For me, the lead is with the one with more significance to the story and have the most screentime. For example, Joe Chen was the obvious leading actress in Swordsman despite her not getting the man and dying in the end.

I don’t really enjoy Yang Mi’s acting. Can’t seem to finish anything her as lead… but there’s something about Huang Xuan that’s so intriguing!

Not just YM’s acting. I find her voice to be really grating too. I mentally cringe every time her character gets excited. The shrill is just too much for my ears… (I need ear protection). Her voice is better suited for cutesy teenage characters.

Huang Xuan’s a solid and pretty divserse actor. He always seems to embody his characters really believable and well. So of course, he’s looking sharp in Les Interprètes. Yang Mi…well I haven’t seen The Witness yet, but honestly she doesn’t seem too bad in the trailer here. Her heroine character is typical, yet she doesn’t exude a damsel-come-love-me air. Like she’s the classic poor hardworking underdog girl, yet she has a really believable drive, at least from the trailer so far. But I have to say, I’m digging Huang Xuan’s hair a lot more than I’m digging Yang Mi’s. It’s not bad, per se, but her haircut really isn’t my things. Like a milder version of Kap and bangs.

Milder version of Kap and bangs.

      LOL! You killed me.

I have never watched Huang Xuan in anything so I’m excited that this looks good for a first impression!

I really love the style of the drama. Very clean and sleek! The hair, makeup and styling is on point and the colour palette is soothing on the eyes. I do agree, there has been a lack of modern dramas/ office dramas recently as Chinese dramas are moving in the period drama direction and I yearn for something modern. This better air soon as the trailer has now triggered my want for a good ol modern drama.

My only hope for this drama is that it gets a proper ending unlike what happened in the book. It was too abrupt, like the author really wanted to drop this ASAP.

I’ve watched a few episodes of a Huang Xuan / Wang Zi Wen drama and he’s enjoyable in that. Hopefully he does the character justice here.

Come on, TV stations, pick it up already. It’s Yang Mi!
