PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Congrats to Nick! Landing another lead role already when he just entered the filming set for Tong Hua’s drama with Chen Qiao En. Mentioned this a few months back and finally it is shaping out its leading cast. When A Snail Loves is the first thriller of three novels written by Ding Mo (Love Me If You Dare). All three thrillers stand on their own. Nick will be playing the role of Ji Bai, a police officer (did I read that right?) and his lady love is Xu Xu, an intelligent criminal psychologist who has yet to be cast. The heroine is a petite “snail” because of her low EQ but once that love is recognized, it’s a strong and solid foundation. Their relationship is described as “mentor-student” when he sees her potential and trains her. That is a pair of words I don’t really like. LOL.

Nick Wang for Beijing Youth Daily Fashion & Luxury this December. He has so many photoshoots. O_O He’s confirmed for the Sohu fashion Awards as well.

Producing goes to Hou Hong Liang and Kong Sheng, both collaborated for Nirvana in Fire, and directing is Zhang Kai Zhou (Love Me If You Dare, Battle of Changsha). The writer Ding Mo and Zhao Shuo will be working on the drama script. Filming plans to start in 2016.

And now the hunt for the female lead begins! Some fans are naming actress Song Yi (The Disguiser) and I think we could use a new leading lady in her!

I want Song Yi to be the female lead OMG because I LOVE Yu Manli the best after Ming Jing in Disguiser!!! Song Yi is beautiful and young and SHE CAN ACT!!! OMG if they get Song Yi to be the female lead I will watch the hell out of this drama even if everything else sucks, just for the fact that my man Nick and my girl Song Yi are the leads!

Yay at Nick finally getting some good lead roles! Boy deserves it after all the hard work. BUT he REALLY needs to put on some weight (muscle!) for the role, because Ji Bai is supposed to be tall and athletic/muscular! Nick is too damn skinny!

It’s GREAT that Ding Mo is collaborating on the script for this because OMG Love Me If You Dare really screwed up on the script! I love you Hai Yan for giving us Nirvana in Fire but holy shit you really stuffed up with the LMIYD script!

Right? I know some are hoping for Sandra (because they are suffering from Second Lead Syndrome in LMIYD) but Song Yi would be an interesting and refreshing choice.

      • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Oh FUCK NO to Sandra I don’t care what anyone says or how good she looks with short hair – if she’s the lead in this then I won’t be able to watch it even if Nick is the lead (OK I may watch it but like only the bits with him in it). Like WTF I had to forward 90% of LMIYD because I can’t stand her “acting”.

I nominate Song Yi! Swear to God, the first moment I heard about this drama being adapted with Nick being the lead, my first thought after rejoicing (because yay, Nick ^_^ ) was “I WANT SONG YI TO BE THE FEMALE LEAD OMG SHANYING MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!”

Yu Manli made such a huge impression on my in Disguiser and I swear to God I never cry in dramas but the revelation of her tragic past and her pain and her death made my eyes tear up – because her acting was just that good and made me feel her pain.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

calm down shimo!! 😀 i think it’s the boring character and sandra is a pretty new actress to be able to elevate the character. she did an awesome job in the left ear and you should check it out. don’t shoot her down yet. lols.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Hey! Leave Sandra and her awesome short hair out of this. :p Aside from her crying, she’s doing a fabulous job as Jian Yao. *hump*

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Lol Shimo. No need to attack Sandra like that. *pats*

I can see Song Yi as Xu Xu, though I was one of the few that didn’t like Yu Manli. She started off strong but turned annoying and melodramatic later on for me. But I do think Song Yi is a good actress if she can make me dislike her character lol.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

LOL chill guys, I’m not attacking Sandra personally (it’s not like I know her or anything so there’s no point) – I’m just commenting on her poor acting in LMIYD. If anything, it’s not just her that under performed, Wallace Huo also under performed in both Hua Qiangu and LMIYD, and I’m speaking as someone who followed Wallace since Chinese Paladin days! I expected much better from BOTH male and female leads, especially given that they’re both experienced actors who’ve starred as leading roles for some time.

I mean, they can’t even deliver their lines properly, so that in itself is cause for criticism. Plus LMIYD has a very sloppy script that doesn’t make anyone look good, really.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Lol we know. Hence our playful tones. I think we can all agree with you that LMIYD has quite a few issues.

      • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Also Song Yi is good friends with Nick in real life (they both came from the same drama school) so they should be able to have a good rapport to strike up some good chemistry! 🙂

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

If anything it’s the script that is lacking and dull. At times there is so much life in these characters and the next minute everyone goes back to being monotone. The writing is really inconsistent. WangKai’s XuRan is so boring it is a tragedy. Jian Yao started out very present as well, now she’s thrown on the back-burners. Instead of being his assistant and an aspiring police officer, she’s reduced to merely his girlfriend. Makes me angry because the Jian Yao in the beginning was sort of a breath of fresh air with her attention to detail and attraction to a life of danger/excitement. I sort of understood why BJY hired her as his assistant. With each episode though she’s suppose to get better at her job and become smarter, not the other way around.

I’m not sure what you mean by delivering her lines. I don’t understand Mandarin, so don’t know if there’s a barrier there, but I personally don’t see a problem. I do read lots of people comment on her “whispering”, not sure if you’re referring to that. I did take notice early on, but as the story progressed it just became who she was – soft-spoken.

Despite all of that I still enjoy this series. Professor Bo and Fu Ziyu are the highlights of the show, that’s why I don’t agree that Wallace under preformed. He did the best with what he was given, script-wise again. Simon is a character with a very dense and traumatic past, the writers could have done so much more with his history.

I don’t want to be a jerk, but can we just take a moment to talk about how horrible the “American” actors are. I feel like vomiting blood every-time anyone of them has more than a minute of screen time. Susan stands out because she has the most screen-time. English is clearly not her first language. The way she delivers her lines are blood-cringing bad. Perhaps next time they should hired actual “Americans” to play the Americans. Just a suggestion. This is also why I’m ok with they fact that the characters converse in 2 different languages vs making them try to speak English or Mandarin.

With all that being said, I’m giving LMIYD lots of break because I see this as a pioneer tv series, both for Shandong and Cdramas. I see a lot of firsts in LMIYD. I hope it will only get better from here on out. That they’ll take what’s works here and leave what doesn’t. I’m expecting “When A Snail Loves” to be on another level.

          —-

HQG is horrible. No one in that project should be proud of their involvement. NO ONE. For anyone he wants to mention Andy Zhang, please sit down because he performance was crap as well. I repeat NO ONE. I can only give brownie points to Wallace and Ma Ke for looking out of this world beautiful. Other than that their right with everyone as well.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

[[[For anyone he wants to mention Andy Zhang, please sit down because he performance was crap as well.]]]

kay, can we agree that liking an actor and their performance is a completely SUBJECTIVE thing? we can criticize an actor’s acting all we want, but let’s not put the fans that liked the said performances down by telling them to sit down, etc. that’s equivalent of telling them to shut up.

i for one didn’t even finish HQG but we can’t casually discard everyone’s hard work in there for many months spent filming. and yes, i like zhang dan feng and i cannot lie. and i won’t sit down either for liking his performance. lol.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

          Agree with frea + 10000000.

I think most people on this site agree that HQG is horrible. Although I must also say, it’s horrible entertaining, LOL. The script and production are terrible. But the acting is actually quite decent, and I DO think Ma Ke and Zhang Danfeng were the stand out.

Reg LMIYD, in particular for the multi-language conversation, I disagree with you Kay. If it were a live broadcast drama, sure, probably they’d rather have the actors converse in different lingo than push them to memorize the lines in foreign language. But the drama was dubbed. DUBBED. Also, talking about actors’ professionalism. It’s not like they will speak English entirely.

And how about Professor Bo Ji Yan who was educated AND teaching in Maryland University but doesn’t speak English, save for the short instruction to his car? Why did the American trained Professor Bo need Jian Yao to translate documents (because I don’t see them giving the documents to, say, the police or other non-English speaking characters there)?

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

All interpretation is subjective but let’s just say that it’s almost universally recognized among Chinese-speaking viewers that Sandra Ma and Wallace Huo both failed in their line delivery. I can’t explain this if you don’t understand Mandarin because apart from the horrible whispering (instant fail), Sandra speaks in almost the one tone with no inflections that are indicative of feeling, even worse that a speech recital. Chinese is a tonal language. Her line delivery grates on my ears TBH and I can’t even sit through an episode of her without fast forwarding.

Apart from that, as an actor she should be able to use her voice and tones and inflections to SHOW us her character – she’s not a Goddamn android so there’s no reason for her to speak like that (even normal people speak with emotions in their voice).

Wallace isn’t much better either. I’m not talking about his accent – I’m talking about his line delivery too. It’s not just about speaking in a soft voice, it’s also about the tones and inflections.

The actress playing Susanna is French (at least that what her name tells me).

I’m not gonna argue about the multi-lingual conversations without universal instant translation because it just comes down to logic. In real life, would it be possible to hold normal conversations between 2 different people who can only understand their own language without some translation in-between? No. If I can only speak in English but my conversational partner can only speak in Chinese, would we be able to talk to each other properly without Chinese-English translation? No.

In the drama, we have conversations between English-only speaking characters (talking in English) to Chinese-only speaking characters (who answer them back in Chinese) as if they can understand each other perfectly without any translation. This is just ridiculous.

If the actors themselves can’t speak the language, then it’s almost a normal thing to just hire native speakers (voice actors) to dub the lines in the correct language. Shanying did this in their other series quite well so there’s no excuse here in LMIYD. It all just comes down to sloppiness.

Also, Bo Jinyan is an American raised and schooled Chinese descendent returning to work in China. He should be fluent in English full-stop while he may only be able to hold conversational Chinese and may not be able to read it, hence he would need someone who knows English to translate Chinese documents that he can’t read into English he can read. This is basic logic. However, LMIYD ignored this basic logic and made Jianyao translate ENGLISH for Bo Jinyan instead of the other way around!

Being the first time filming a genre like LMIYD does NOT excuse a production company’s sloppiness, ESPECIALLY for a company like Shanying who is KNOWN for their care for fine details! In fact, Shanying made their name for being careful with their productions and for actually respecting the audience’s intelligence! MANY loyal fans of Shanying are unhappy with LMIYD because this is the drama that is killing their own reputation as a production company who take utmost care in their work. The script is sloppy, the acting is mediocre to bad, and what the hell happened in post-production when they should have ironed out these very basic problems?

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Also, when I say “line delivery”, I mean the way actors deliver their lines, i.e. act with their voice. Professional / trained actors act using a combination of facial expressions, body language, and voice inflections to bring their characters to life. Even in real life, depending on situations or who we speak to, our voice and tone will be different.

Example: Lee Pace in Soldier’s Girl as a trans-woman (soft-spoken gentle tones, seductive / feminine body language, genteel facial expressions) vs. Lee Pace in Hobbit as Elven warrior king Thranduil (authoritative and deep manly voice, regal bearing and elegant postures, fierce badass king). Same actor, completely different bearing, voice, facial expressions, body language. (Almost unrecognizable as the same person, really – this is acting).

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

LOL Li Xunran’s crowning moment of awesome in this whole LMIYD drama are his scenes with Zhang Luyi and that shootout at the hospital where he shot down like 4 bad guys after being shot 3 times himself haha

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Also can I just say that the nurse in ep 19-20 of LMIYD is awesome (even though she’s a bad guy).

    • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

I LOVE Song Yi in Disguiser and yes, Wang Kai and her will be well matched!! Oh please… put it out there to the director!!

      • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

I wish I could leave a message for the Shanying bosses/directors like the Chinese public can, but unfortunately overseas fans like me can’t do anything but pray that somehow my mental message can travel across space and get into their heads LOL

But yeah, Song Yi + Wang Kai will be awesome leads! I’m sick of seeing the same idols who only look good (but can’t act for shit) taking over all the lead roles in dramas. Give the people WHO CAN ACT on top of looking good a chance! Song Yi’s been acting in supporting roles for like 8 years now and it’s about time to let her have a chance to shine.

    • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Haha so agree! Song Yi would REALLY fit as Xu Xu, both physically and not! I started reading a translation of When a Snail Loves a while back, and while it’s not AMAZING and die-worthy, it’s very nice and I like it. Xu Xu’s really interesting and unconventional, and I’d love to see what Song Yi can pull off. Ji Bai will be an interesting role for Wang Kai 🙂 Idk what he was like in LMIYD cuz I didn’t watch even a single ep, but so far I haven’t seen Wang Kai play anything like Ji Bai. I’m not sure if I got this right, since I’ve only read a few chapters, and it was a while ago, but I remember Ji Bai’s pretty aloof and cold, but his inner thoughts can be hilariously childish and perverted. (shimo, do you remember when he accidentally touched Xu Xu’s boobs when he saved her from the crazy dude and he was totally freaking out about it. LOL) I mean, we’ve seen cute and adorable Wang Kai in reality shows, but as a character/actor, he plays really serious guys (not going to count his one flamboyant role, esp since I didn’t watch that drama…and never will; doesn’t seem like my thing)…so super excited. No doubt he can pull it off.

      • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

LOL personal preference, but I actually would like to see more crime-solving and action (like epic shootouts, car chases, etc.) than all the lovey-dovey shit…

It’ll be fun to see how Nick plays the role cuz TBH I skimmed through the novel more than anything (too much lovey-dovey/perverted stuff and not enough crime/mystery). I hope they make a better script this time because no actor/actress, regardless of skill, can rescue a drama if the script is crap.

I watched LMIYD up till the latest ep and the BEST sequence in the entire series so far is the shootout at the hospital (it only lasted a few minutes but at least it was interesting and didn’t bore me to tears).

Wang Kai is good at serious roles AND comedic roles (see his Chen Jiaming) so it’ll be nice to see how he plays Ji Bai. I actually like Li Xunran (his character in LMIYD) more than Ji Bai but anyway…

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Haha I haven’t read enough to develop an actual opinion on book Ji Bai, but you’re right on the crime aspect. When a Snail Loves, at least in the beginning, focuses very much on the technical aspect of police work with everything from detailed descriptions of investigating, to basic report-writing. It allows Xu Xu to really show off her IQ and develop the mentor relationship between Ji Bai and Xu Xu when she’s solving her first crime.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

I haven’t read much and I don’t remember much, but I think there’s very little romantic development in the first few chapters. The book does a good job of showcasing the police workplace, from competing for the best mentor, to physical training. It shows Xu Xu’s growth as a detective, since she super smart and sharp, but at the fundamental level, she’s a rookie and a newbie who lacks field experience. Her slow mentorship with Ji Bai works because he’s smart AND he has the experience she lacks. He recognizes her intelligence but also is quick to point out why her way isn’t working and drops subtle but useful hints on how to improve as a professional. I really hope the drama doesn’t drop that development line and the technical police work. I think it’s really realistic in portraying the everyday grind of being a police/detective. The cases aren’t flashy or particularly scary or important, but it’s clear on how Xu Xu goes about investigating and doing boring but necessary field work while drawing smart conclusions to reach her solution.

      • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

LOL I know mine may be an unpopular opinion but I’m honestly not that into book Ji Bai. BUT with that said, I may have a more favorable impression depending on how they write him in the drama version and/or how Nick plays him.

      • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

LOL his flamboyant Chen Jiaming was actually quite well-enacted. The drama series was silly but his sassy flamboyantly (gay) character was definitely a highlight … although he was so convincing that people actually thought he was flaming gay in real life…

  2. 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

    *SCREAM* *trying to calm down*

haha @shimokuren well…MTE!!! i couldnt stand her acting in LMIYD but her chemistry with Wang Kai for Bazaar was great 🙂 but seriously i nodded my head when i read your comment 😀

i’m just so happy for wang kai. i read that novel *havent finished it yet* so… i can picture him as the male lead. while for the girl, uhmm.. Song Yi is one of the breakout artists of this year… she’s gonna rock every character well in my opinion.

and congratulation dear Nick for getting another lead role… may all the successful will be yours ~chu~ *sounds like a bday wish* haha

    • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Yeah Sandra looks good in that Bazaar photoshoot but her acting in LMIYD sucks.
Song Yi is a talented young actress who deserves a chance at a lead role instead of the many supporting roles that she always gets – producers / casting directors should give other people a chance at lead roles instead of using the same people over and over again.

Nick’s gonna be having a busy year cuz of the many roles he’s getting. It’ll be great cuz it’s about damn time! 🙂 Except he needs to eat more cuz he’s way too skinny.

      • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Haha Nick and his skinny-ness. Lol. Nick has a really strong jaw line and strong facial bone structure, so in Disguiser and Nirvana (in Nirvana especially) with the sharp suits and really thick imposing prince-robes, I always had this impression that Nick was really bulky and muscular. And then lol I saw him in his sporty outfit in Run for Time and lol I’m like wow Nick, you’re really lanky. Haha he does need to beef up a bit more. 🙂 But that pic of him from like 11 years ago. Now THAT was a stick-thin Nick. I’m glad he’s less skinny than he was then.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

I agree with you about Nick’s jawline, etc. although I could tell he had a slight frame under all the armor and robes because his shoulders were quite narrow even with the padded armor or many layered robes in Nirvana. Actually even Hu Ge has wider shoulders than Nick does…

I saw many of his old pictures (like from his academy days till recent photos) and it seems he always had a really lanky frame, and he being so skinny doesn’t help. He would look much better if he gained like 20 pounds or something cuz with his facial bone structure, he’s look even better with the extra flesh on his face. Nick has nice facial features but right now his cheeks are so sunken in and his face looks a bit too pointy. It’s like how Jin Dong transformed from a handsome man (he was always quite skinny) to a sex god 男神 (as Ming Lou) with the extra 20 pounds he put on for his role in Disguiser 🙂

    • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

I mean, I’m generally pretty tolerant for younger actors and actresses (although age is no excuse because we have child actors who can put out Oscar worthy performances so there) but I draw the line at people who can’t even deliver lines properly (like Sandra in LMIYD). Seriously, she’s an experienced actress who’s been having lead roles for some time now so she should AT LEAST be able to speak her lines properly. Isn’t that like the first thing they teach in drama school? I’ve seen high school drama students act better than her. And before people start bricking me, I’m just stating the facts *shrug*

Even for actors/actresses I like, if they don’t perform well in a role, then I will say so. Just like Li Yifeng in Lost Tomb – everyone who’s been on this site long enough knows how much I like Li Yifeng, but the truth is that he really sucked (like majorly effing sucked) in Lost Tomb as Wu Xie. Same as Wallace Huo in Hua Qiangu (he was my dream cast the whole time and I’ve liked Wallace since Chinese Paladin days so yeah), but the fact is that he seriously under performed in HQG and actually made me hate the character that I somewhat liked when reading the novel!

      • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

totally agree with you about sandra. at first i thought she was a rookie, hehe… but then searching about LMIYD and her, she’s not 🙂 perhaps, she’s just like Tang Yan in My Sunshine. Not their best acting. But i really like her Bazaar pics, very outstanding!
did you watch the behind the scene? wow.. unpredictable.. how about her co-stars? i thought wallace huo is such a perfectionist, just like wallace chung. correct?

Song Yi delivered her character very well in the disguiser. her past and her ‘current’, her memory and her willingness… she’s really good, better than other senior actresses #nomention 😀

haha, i feel you about actors i like. i remember, back then i was a hardcore fan of Yunho from TVXQ. then he played in a drama with go ara. i stopped watching that drama on ep 1. i couldnt stand his acting.. until now, i never finish anything with him, lols.
Well, i have to say that Huang Xiao Ming. i like him super much, but his ‘cruel romance’ was just cruelly bad… hahaha.. sorry not sorry. the same to chen qiao en.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Oh I totally get what you mean! 🙂

Yeah, I watched a bit of Cruel Romance but then dropped it very quickly cuz it was so shit LOL. I like Huang Xiaoming but he was really uh bleh in it. Just like Chen Qiao En – she’s beautiful and all but not a very good actress…

I used to like Tang Yan very much (after Chinese Paladin 3) but then her acting’s been deteriorating ever since. It’s gotten to the point where I can’t even watch her dramas anymore LOL

    • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Oh and latest news has it that the Ming family (Liu Mintao, Jin Dong, Wang Kai, Hu Ge) will reunite at the Anhui awards ceremony, perhaps even taking the stage together (maybe Disguiser or Nirvana in Fire will get some awards hehe) 🙂

      • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

I became a fan of Wallace Huo after watching ‘Battle of Changsha”. Poor me wanted to watch more of his work and had no choice but to sit through drama after drama of bad acting and nonsense. By then I sort of heard who was famous in the CDrama world and knew of Tang Yang. Someone told me “Perfect Couple” was a good series 🙁 . Her acting in there was on a whole other level of bad. I was stunned for a very long time why she was so popular.

I’ve also heard of Joe Chen and saw a large amount of her work and I’m so over her. Anyone who talks about how good of an actress she is loses their credibility.

Are all these actresses just one hit wonders?

The same with Liu ShiShi. I was away from Cdrams for nearly a decade. BBJX brought me back because I was moved by her performance as RouXi, but I have not seen anything else from her that has impressed me. She’s not a bad actress, just not a very good. She has a republican drama coming up that I’m really crossing my fingers will show improvements.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

I agree with you about Perfect Couple. OH MY GOD that was a whole new level of TERRIBLE. I’ve been a LONG time fan of Wallace and Tang Yan before I watched that and I was so eager to watch it, but then had to drop it by the 9th episode because it was so Goddamn bad.

Tang Yan’s acting has been deteriorating since her strong performance in Chinese Paladin 3 many years back, which is very unfortunate as I had high hopes for her. Joe Chen is a beautiful lady but her acting is *sigh* not much better. Liu Shishi hasn’t made any good performances since Bubu Jingxin so I’ve stopped watching her too.

I will forgive the above beautiful leading ladies if it is just the one-off bad performance, but when they are privileged enough to be cast in leading roles one after the other (while other very talented actresses are sidelined because of lack of fame or connections, etc.) and STILL under perform then there is no Goddamn excuse.

I have a similar gripe with actors too. I like Wallace very much but his recent performances are very disappointing. I expect much better from someone who’s been the alpha male in the industry for so long. He’s been the lead actor for YEARS now and if he can’t even deliver lines properly then that in itself is cause for criticism.

  3. 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Song Yi would be a good fit for Xu Xu. The thing about Xu Xu is that she’s super calm and composed most of the time. Sometimes it was to the point where I wanted to know if she’s actually human. LOL. Think Yu Manli when she was still at military school except a teeny tiny bit more sociable.

As for Nick’s character, all I can do is sigh (dreamily) and start looking forward to his portrayal of Ji Bai. Btw, Xu Xu calls him Third Brother 三哥 in the book. Cannot to finally hear and see it on screen!

    • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

LOL let’s hope they do a better job this time with the script than LMIYD, cuz that was an epic fail of a script if you ask me…

Haha “Yu Manli but more sociable” … I like that 🙂 Yu Manli herself was an awesome badass though. Such a great character. 🙂

Song Yi has a sweet voice so it’ll be interesting to see how she calls him “三哥~” LOL

OMG Song Yi has SUCH a sweet voice. I loved it in Disguiser. I also loved her line delivery. She pulled off the changes from vulnerable partner with Ming Tai to arrogant, sly seductress with her targets so so well. All with the honey sweet voice. It’s amazing. On line delivery, I have to say I think Hu Ge is one of THE MOST talented actors who can dub their own voices and do it so so well. It’s that perfect compatibility between the emotions and inflections of his voice and his facial expressions and body language on screen. It just works seamlessly. People are just unaware how big a difference the dubbing/voicing of a character is. The tone and voice of the character (matching in both timing AND emotional delivery) is so so vital in creating a believable, genuine character. Hu Ge is such a badass in this aspect. So is Jin Dong. Wang Kai’s good, but personally I’ve seen more versatility with Hu Ge, although that could change once we actually see Wang Kai’s upcoming projects.

Anyways totally agree with you shimo on your emphasis on line delivery. So important. There are amazing dubbers out there (I really really like the one who did Huang Rong in the 2008 Legend of the Condor Heroes…I’m pretty sure she did a lot of other classic characters too). BUT like with Hu Ge and Jin Dong, I think it’s so important for capable actors to dub their own roles, because character interpretation SO shows in their lines. The interpretation of an actor and a voice actor might be different, and that affects things. When you’re as good as Hu Ge, you dub your own effing lines, and you do it effing fantastically.

          Hear hear! 🙂

Can I just say I TOTALLY agree with you about Song Yi and Hu Ge? Like, Hu Ge has done professional voice acting for animations, etc. on top of dubbing his own voice for his dramas. His AWESOME line delivery in Nirvana in Fire is EPIC! Song Yi is a great young actress with lots of potential too 🙂

But if we’re talking about line delivery, then let me just mention Liu Mintao, the wonderful actress who played Consort Jing in Nirvana and Ming Jing in Disguiser. Holy shit. Now THAT is awesome line delivery and acting! Did you see how she laid the smackdown on the Wang family in ep 6 of Disguiser? OMG! What a queen!

Jin Dong is AWESOME at line delivery and acting as well, since he has been (and awarded for) in numerous live stage productions. Now that’s a challenge for actors.

Actually the Ming family are all really good actors/actresses. Wang Kai is pretty good at his line delivery with consistently good performances in Nirvana and Disguiser. I don’t know if you’ve seen All Quiet in Peking but Goddamn, there was this epic scene of Wang Kai’s character laying the smackdown on a bunch of evil dudes with all badassery and then turning around the next moment with a manly-tear heartfelt plea to his brother! If that’s not awesome then I don’t know what is! Actually that was one of the character moment highlights of Wang Kai’s supporting role in All Quiet in Peking that made many people pay attention to him.

Also Hu Ge has been having voice training since his high school days, with his parents realizing his potential as a performer and sending him to performing arts school even before he got into Shanghai Theater Academy. He has a beautiful voice naturally and with the hard work and proper training – that’s why he can sing and speak so well with perfect Mandarin.

Hu Ge has said before in interviews (and Wang Kai too, actually) that he will always dub his own roles whenever he can because dubbing his own role is a way for him to enact the character again, improving on any regrets he has with the first performance he did while filming.

Wang Kai has said that he always has some regrets on his performance first time round (during filming) and see dubbing his own character as a way to “fix” his mistakes – it’s the same reason why he requests for retakes during filming if the director allows it (as a way to improve his performance) and he always watches the finished product (film/drama) to reflect on and judge his own performance.

Actually both Hu Ge and Wang Kai are quite similar in the way they try to improve themselves (also Jin Dong is well-known for he perfectionism too LOL). They’re still relatively young (although they’ve been acting for a long time so have gained valuable experience) and I bet if they keep up the work ethic, by the time they get to Jin Dong’s age they’re gonna be awesome like him too 🙂

I’m also pretty positive Liu Mintao has worked very hard on her voice acting / line delivery because listening to her voice acting (and very subtle and natural acting in facial expression and body language) is like watching an experienced serious thespian at work (this lady is AWESOME). Same deal with Liu Yijun (the awesome actor who played Xie Yu in Nirvana and Wang Tianfeng in Disguiser) and the awesome actor who played Duke Yan (who is a very experienced veteran with a palpable aura of awesome every time he graces the screen OMG!).

LOL I’m using the word “awesome” a lot cuz these guys are seriously that good 🙂

And I dunno if you know about this, but Jin Dong and Hu Ge (especially Hu Ge) have been getting awards left right and center for their performances as Ming Lou (Jin Dong) and Mei Changsu (Hu Ge)

@shimo. OMG I finally watched the clip of WK from All Quiet in Peking and it’s AMAZING! At one point, just from body language and facial expression and inflections in tone, WK totally pulls off a sarcastic yet outwardly respectful attitude of seriously-are-you-fucking-bullshitting-me-right-now-you-idiot so so well.

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Wang Kai didn’t have much screen time in All Quiet in Peking, but he left a memorable impression because he was so good in the role as the main character’s brother 🙂

Just like his Ah Cheng in Disguiser is meant to be more of a background / servant (butler) type of role, but he was so good that it made the audience remember him (I know I did)

Same with Nirvana in Fire – Jingyan in the novel is quiet bland but WK brought the character to life in the drama. Drama Jingyan is way more entertaining than book Jingyan LOL

Now if only he’d be in that Shanying doctor drama with Jin Dong (I’m REALLY looking forward to this drama cuz the theme is all about medical stuff which is awesome and Jin Dong is the lead YAY) then I will be very happy indeed 🙂

I haven’t seen AQIP, but could explain more about the relationship bw Liu Ye’s character and WK’s character? They seemed a little estranged in the clip you shared…

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

Wang Kai’s character is a devoted Kuomintang member and vice chief of Beiping police. His family (esp. his father) and he and his brother are dedicated Kuomintang people, but because of the corruption of the KMT government, Wang Kai’s character’s brother (a decorated KMT war hero pilot) was framed by KMT to be a scapegoat, but the Communists saved him (WK’s bro) and he converted to the Communist Party, being disillusioned by the wretched acts of the KMT government and the suffering of the people. WK’s brother also doesn’t like their father much because he married another woman shortly after their birth mother died.

WK doesn’t know very much about it but he was really pissed at the KMT high ranking officials because they’re all trying to lay ALL the blame on WK’s father and brother (i.e. make them the scapegoat) while people are suffering, hence he charged in and told them off.

WK’s father is in charge of the Beiping reserve bank and many high ranking KMT officials use it to launder money, etc. bankrupting the government and causing the regular folks to suffer hunger and poverty. As a result, the Commies have infiltrated the people and convinced the people to rebel and overthrow the KMT party. WK’s family gets caught in between the KMT vs Commies showdown and basically AQIP documents the fall of the KMT government and rise of the Communist Party.

Thanks Shimo. But like are they close?

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

WK’s character (Fang Mengwei) loves and respects his brother (Fang Meng’ao), so he’s conflicted because he suspects Meng’ao of betraying KMT and converting to Commies. Meng’ao tries to get his lil bro to stay out of all the conflict and tries to hide his Commie conversion from him (cuz being a Commie will bring big trouble, like arrests and even death), but of course Mengwei isn’t stupid and eventually figures it out. Mengwei himself gets fed up with the KMT corruption anyway so while he doesn’t outright convert to Commies (if I remember correctly), he listens to Meng’ao and supports Meng’ao and does what Meng’ao tells him to do…

That’s so sweet! I wish they could do a cute of the Fang bros bromance only. Haha that would make my day. I would watch All Quiet in Peking, except it’s too clot heavy and requires too much heavy thinking and no skimming to understand what’s going on and try to catch all the beautiful minute details. I mean Disguiser was complicated enough, but that was more espionage heavy, while AQiP seems even more subtle and seriously politically heavy. It’s hard for me to watch an ep multiple times to catch everything thats going on.

AQIP is very political (based on the novel of the same name by an award winning author who was also the scriptwriter for the drama), like heaps of details about the KMT vs Commies conflict and stuff. Some of the details are lost on me as well cuz I’m not very familiar with Chinese Republican era history. If anything, Zu Feng (the guy who plays Cui Zhongshi) was totally epic, like OMG so epic that he got the Anhui award for best supporting actor (and very rightly deserved). AQIP, Disguiser, and Nirvana are all nominated in the 飞天 awards (and they were all directed by the same directors LOL) which are more prestigious than the Anhui awards and are held once every 2 years. In the Anhui awards, AQIP got the best scriptwriter and director awards last year as well and was ranked #2 in the Top 10 best general dramas.

What baffles me is how the hell did Shanying go from AQIP, Nirvana, and Disguiser (good quality stuff) to the shit that is Love Me If You Dare?! This is something that all Shanying fans fail to understand LOL. Well LMIYD had a different director, the script sucked balls, the male/female leads sucked, the editing was all over the place, and I read the original novel to check and even the novel was shit so…

        • 54 thoughts on “PD Hou Hong Liang confirms Nick Wang in When A Snail Loves

LMIYD TRIED to be a Chinese version of BBC Sherlock but it epically FAILED, like really epically failed.

LOL, I posted on the wrong article about how good Kai looks with eye glasses and the fact that I want his leading lady in this upcoming drama series to be Song Yi (or the very least an actress on her level or beyond).
