Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

I have no words for this trend anymore. But since it’s happening, we might as well join in the fun of unraveling new faces. I’m hoping that they stay true to their words and cast new faces through whatever reality shows/programs they’re planning. Two production companies, Huace Media and Perfect Pictures and Media Group, have bought the rights to adapt Jin Yong’s Legend of the Condor Heroes, first part of the Condor Trilogy next year. Producing the series is Guo Jing Yu (Yangko Dance), directing is Jiang Jia Jun (Yangko Dance, Love is Back), and writing is Chen Man Ling.

Let’s walk down memory lane to see which remake is your favorite?

New fans who don’t know about Jin Yong or the novels he has written, please visit Wiki.

Michelle Yim and Jason Pai Piao for CTV in 1976. I did not watch this version.

This lady was and still is very pretty.

The most famous version of all I guess is the TVB adaptation in 1983 with Felix Wong and Barbara Yung. My parents’ favorite and what I have seen throughout my career as a drama fangirl. And yet, I don’t think I have seen the entirety of it. Only short and long scenes here and there. Felix was so adorable and Barbara was unstoppable.

My mom can never forget her face. That chin wag is a classic. 😛

The pretty version of Julian Cheung and Athena Chu in 1993. Athena was very very cute. The cutest version? I don’t remember.

And you kids who were born in the late 90s and early 2000s might be more familiar with Hu Ge and Ariel Lin‘s adaptation in 2008. I still remember Tang Yan’s confession that these two did indeed date at some point. hehe.

I think I have said this before but despite Huang Rong’s intelligent and quick-witted nature, she isn’t my personal favorite in the Wuxia world. (Yes. She’s awesome, no doubt about that!) But she’s also a spoiled brat who is lucky Guo Jing is in her life; a bumbling man who opens up her eyes and heart to sensitivity and kindness, while she gives him tips on how to survive in the streets. Lol. Hence, they are the perfect match. An impeccable pair.

Personally Huang Rong is one of my favorite characters in LoCH, but I always always HATE her to the fucking nth degree in RotCH because she’s such a bitch in that one. Depending on which version you watch, her character in RotCH really is so off from LoCH. In LoCH she’s bratty and arrogant, but she’s also nice enough to people that she cares about, which in all reality, is completely human. She was never one who cared about “orthodox” stuff and the rules, so while I get that she hates Yang Kang, she also loved Mu Nian Ci as a sister and shouldn’t have held such a prejudice against Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu. I just hate her polar characterization in RotCH no matter which version (esp the 2006 and 2014 versions).

LotCH is LITERALLY one of my all time favorite dramas. It’s just so epic and spans so many things, and is, to me, the epitome of Chinese wuxia literature. It embodies the heroism, patriotism, history, epic-saga-journey, family, brotherhood, romance, daoist etc religion. Everything I associate with the genre. My personally favorite version is the 2008 version with Hu Ge and Ariel. Maybe because I watched that version first, but I feel like all of the actors embodied there characters so well. I liked the 2003 version well enough, but it wasn’t a fav by any means. I REALLY want to watch the 1983 Barbara Yung version because I hear it’s absolutely outstanding, but I can’t seem to find it online anywhere, and I wouldn’t even know where to buy it or if they even sell in anymore. Between 2003 and 2008, I think a major difference is the characterization of HR. With Arial, HR was sly, clever, snooty, but also more on the cute side. Whereas in 2003 with Zhou Xun, HR was definitely more mean-spirited and a (sort of) lovable bitch essentially. Both characterization keep with the books, since she’s supposed to be all of those things, even a little mean, but I just like Ariel’s HR more than I do Zhou Xun’s.

Speaking of adaptations, I’m swear I’m NOT going to watch the new version (sigh. I probably will). Please people, stop effing ruining the Jin Yong classics. Why are they doing this literally year after year?! From the new versions of Duke of Mount Deer, Romance of the Condor Heroes, Tian Long Ba Bu, Swordsman…I expect this remake to be ABSOLUTELY HORRENDOUS and nothing short of terrible. Only the newer 2009 Yi Tian Tu Long was watchable, but even then, I preferred the 2003 version with Alec Su.

“she also loved Mu Nian Ci as a sister and shouldn’t have held such a prejudice against Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu”

I think you haven’t read the book if you think HR and MNC were close. They were never close, HR at the start even hated MNC because GJ was requested to marry MNC by YK’s father to follow with the agreement between the fathers before they were born.

She was prejudice against YG because of YK and because she could see how much of a rascal he was, even at a young age, YG was smart and sly, he knew how to manipulate people and situations to his advantage. HR saw this as a bad trait and was afraid he would take the path of his father if he wasn’t lead right. She choose to teach him literature instead of martial arts was because she wanted him to learn the difference between right and wrong before he got too powerful for his own good. She was against YG and XLN because it would have lead YG down the wrong path and force him into the road she hoped he would never take.

HR meant well, she just choose the wrong way to deal with it.

Haha I go back to rewatch 2008 Legend of the Condor Heroes every year (or every two years at least), and while at that point, I feel like Ariel was already one damn actress in her role, LSS…lol. LSS isn’t the most amazing actress right now even, but at least she does well-enough and holds her own. But lol OMG if you go back to watch her Mu Nian Ci…god she was beautiful, but her acting was stiff as a board…her acting was unnatural, bland, and boring, and she made her character an absolute love-sick damsel-in-distress. While Mu Nian Ci’s not as outwardly fiery in the books as Huang Rong, she’s also supposed have a strong backbone and inner-self, and she’s definitely not a push-over.

There’s no like button but your comment made my day. ^^

As a Jin Yong fan, the one that Huang Rong was portrayed the best for me isthe 2003. Zhou Xun.
I am old enough to be able to watch all of the above version. 555
Let me tell you. When it was aired Michelle and Paio were phenomenon. They became very famous.

  6. 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

I like the 2003 one best! Li Ya Peng was perfect Guo JIng, I like Zhou Xun too, the series was really good, and love the theme song. as much as I like Hu Gu LSS, Yuan Hong, i’ve only seen parts of their version, just can;t seem to finish it. I am not a fan of YR character either, sh can be so annoying at times. My fav is Ren Ying Ying. Who do you think will be the perfect cast?

  7. 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

Hi all. I may be one of the few who’s surprised that this series is getting another makeover. It hasn’t been that long since the last remake. 😀

The only adaptations I haven’t seen are the ones from 1976 and 2003. The 1983 version was my introduction to “Legend of the Condor Heroes”. That was a classic. 😀

I hope the 2016 remake will put more emphasis on real martial arts and not rely too much on CGI.

    • 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

I hope so too. These days our actors do less hand-to-hand combats and more flying on wires and spouting coloring beams. China has beautiful scenery, we need to showcase them more often!

      • 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

Yes! I agree with you about the scenery. I actually don’t mind the flying on wires, as long as it looks like the actors and actresses are putting in effort to make their flying techniques look real…if that makes any sense to you. 😛

I only hope the writer will stick to the original plots as it’s written in the novels. The latest adaptation to Jin Yong’s 神鵰俠侶 (ROCH) and 笑傲江湖 (The Swordsman) were terrible. They managed to completely ruin the main characters and the perfect stories.

As to which is my favorite adaptation of the LOCH, I would say Julian Cheung and Athena Chu in 1993 and Hu Ge and Ariel Lin‘s adaptation in 2008. These actors/actresses suited the roles and the storylines were pretty much the same as the novels.

Hopefully, now that Yumama is not involved, the new remake will be better. 🙂

  9. 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

My favorite adaptation of LOCH would always be the Felix Wong / Barbara Yung version because that’s the one I grew up watching. A classic.

But to be honest, I am not a fan of LOCH or ROCH. I don’t particularly care for both. For me, it was always like “when is this saga ever going to end?”. I think it’s mostly because I didn’t like Guo Jing and found him too boring. Huang Rong is adorable, but in the end I still prefer Ren Ying Ying from The Swordsman and also Zhao Min from HSDS.

I did read that fans want Liying to play Huang Rong and I can totally see her in that character.

    • 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

Imagine the horror on my face when they said Wallace Huo and Zhao Li Ying. Too early for me. I need more time to get over Flower! But I don’t mind if it’s with another actor. haha XD

I really like Gigi Lai’s Zhao Min even though I was rooting for Charmaine’s character at the time.

      • 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

Wallace? I read that it was LYF who was at the top of fans’ votes. Lol.

        • 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

Wallace’s name was mentioned first and then the wagon of names start piling up, then they said they want new faces. I want to see her with Prince Ray!!

        • 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

I hope that wallace does not take on this project as guo jing, i can’t see him as guo jing, he is more of a yang kang! He has the look for it. Then again i feel wallace has now mature, i hope to see the new younger artist!

        • 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

I would love to see her paired up with Prince Ray in this drama or in something else. What a cute couple they’d make!

  10. 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

Is no one sick of these stories yet? I know they are classics but it’s the same thing over and over again…

    • 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

I know what you mean but I’m guessing we’ll see a few more remakes within our lifetime.

    • 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

“but it’s the same thing over and over again …”

you should love the latest adaptations. they are certainly different.

  11. 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

Looks like I’ll be the only one here who’s actually quite enthusiastic about this project. I love LOCH, and the 1982 version is my all time favorite Asian drama. It’s superior even to today’s dramas. It’s probably not the most faithful to the original story (I heard the 2003 version is the closest one, and Zhou Xun’s portrayal is Jin Yong’s personal preference), but it’s excellently executed. The acting (with amazing chemistry between the actors), script, directing, fighting choreography, and soundtrack… AWESOME. I still remember the opening and ending themes, and one or two other songs from the drama. I also love the 2008 version, though mostly for Hu Ge, Ariel, and Li Jie (a charming Ou Yang Ke — we can’t get further from the novel LOL).

So I look forward to finding out who they will cast in the leading roles. I can imagine ZLY as Huang Rong, but I’d like to see actresses like Janice Wu, Andy Yang, or Gina Jin in that role. I think they can pull it off. And although Sandra Ma disappoints me in Love Me if You Dare, I also think she might be suitable (based on her Left Ear performance).

    • 30 thoughts on “Remake of The Legend of the Condor Heroes 2016 begins casting

I guess we just want new drama adaptations of something that is not related to Jin Yong. Lol.

Janice Wu – her name is in the running for Huang Rong! I’m excited for her!! She would be a cute one. Sandra would be a great candidate too.

hi kap, just curious. who is your favorite?

think base on the personality/character of rong er RAINIE YANG is the best candidate for the role

What do you think?
