Is this the promo week for costumes? Which production to outdo the rest and rise above in terms of creativity and beauty? I don’t mind one-colored costumes but then you set yourself up for some needed eye-catching designs to prevent blandness! Gu Long’s The Legend of Flying Daggers drops a batch of posters for their characters yesterday and I’m pretty much not as pumped as I thought I would be. They overly photoshopped these actors too much! C’mon, editing crew, you have a group of beautiful people!
With all that being said, I haven’t finished Julian (Chi Lam)’s version yet, I think I’m stuck at episode 5 or something. No time!
Legend of the Flying Daggers is the fifth and final installment to Gu Long‘s Little Li Flying Dagger series. FYI, Zhu Yi Long’s Border Town Prodigal is the third installment. The novel follows Li Huai, Li Xun Huan’s grandson, as he wanders in jianghu to help the poor and uphold justice using his grandfather’s Little Li Dagger technique.
Hawick Lau as Li Huai. No matter how much you photoshop Hawick, he is still recognizable. How crazy is that?! The green rim looks really nice, if only Yang Rong didn’t have on a similar outfit.
Lovely Yang Rong as the top female assassin, Xue Cai Yue. In the end she has an ultimate battle with the male lead because his father killed her father.
Gui Gui will portray Fang Ke Ke, a feisty, strong-willed pepper – second female lead who grew up with the male lead, Li Huai, and harbors a crush on him.
Huang Ming (Legend of Fragrance) as the male lead’s half brother, Li Zheng. Silky green!
Kenny Kwan (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) as Li Huai’s best friend.
Crystal Yuan Bing Yan.
Jeremy Jones.
Michelle Bai Bing.
Produced by Heli Chen Guang International Media (Tiny Times), Fortune Media Corp (Women on the Breadful Tree), and Olympus Films (Ah Boys to Men 3: Frogmen). In charge of editing the drama script is Rao Jun and the three directors are Liang Sheng Quan (Legend of the Ancient Sword), Huang Jun Wen (Legend of the Ancient Sword), and Liu Guo Hui.

Ohh maan, Kappy, you’re killing me with all this prettiness?! O_O I’m really torn. On one hand, Hawick is really bland, on the other – I like his character. I like Yang Rong, I like Gui Gui, buuut Keke has so much screen time that I must FF lots of stuff to avoid her shrieking.
I also dropped Julian’s version, even though I did not want to. 🙁 YT has only a Cantonese version of the old drama which I can’t understand. Another user gave me a link to a Chinese streaming site for the mandarin version but the connection was so bad loading was torture.

Right? Torn torn torn!
I just don’t have the luxury of time to watch anything. Working and working non-stop these past two weeks. It’s killing me. X(

*internet hugs* Hang on, Kappy …

Really? I’m only on ep 8 (and probably not going to continue watching) but in the Julian version, I HATE the character. He’s really annoying and irritating. Like, he’s really “heroic” in that he tried to help everyone, but I just find him annoying.

well, tbh, almost everyone in this story is a bad person to some degree or another. Very few of them have some shred of honor, or intellect, or not-horrible personality which can make us simpatize with them or, at least, understand their actions. The great majority of people that parade on screen I would gladly lock in a prison and drop the key to it into the ocean. I also found the majority of plot boring and quite often abused the FF button.
There were only two reasons that kept me watching for 20+ episodes before I gave up. I think the conflict between the main couple is the stuff legendary tragic love stories are made of. His father killed her father. They fall in love before knowing this fact. And when they find out, it’s too late because they both know their love is true but things can’t go on between them like before. Thus, we get a tragic fight to the death between husband and wife. But to get to this delicious conflict you must sit trough hours and hours of boring intrigue, bland supporting characters and lots of Keke’s shrieking.
The second reason is Julian. I developed a major crush on that guy. I think I could probably sit and watch him read from a phone book and still be interested.:))))
Ruby was also adequate. Wish she was a better actress but we can’t have it all, can we. 🙂

I dropped Julian’s version after two episodes. Or maybe one. I can’t remember. O_O In any case, I’ll pick it up again once I’m not so busy.
Is it bad that I hate the way they photoshopped the posters? Here we have some pretty people who don’t need to be PSed or made to look like animation characters. Something tells me they’re going to use a lot of CG in the drama. 🙁

Nope, it’s not bad. I think any sane person would say the same thing. Overly photoshopped for no good reason at all. These people have the best skin!

The posters are super pretty, and yay Yang Rong finally has a good lead role! But you’re right. too much facial Photoshop. Yang Rong and Gui Gui are barely recognizable.

Next year could be Yang Rong’s year, she’s a lead in many series! =)

Yayay but at the same time…nooo. I don’t really want to let go of this year. Even with the utter fail of HQG, I feel like this year was pretty decent. Cruel Romance to start with (although I admit I didn’t actually finish that) …skip of Lady and Liar (sorry, I got tired of Tang Yan and Hawick…kind of. Esp after Tang Yan became all weak and depressing)…Xuan Feng Shao Nv (despite people’s mixed feelings, I actually loved that one)..the Interns was pretty decent (although I haven’t finished that either…it’s not really my thing even though it was pretty good), WuXin Fa Shi’s awesomeness, news of so many new awesome dramas, Hu Ge’s AWESOMENESS! with NiF and Disguiser, and the (hopefully) start of Legend of Qin in December, Hu Ge’s next drama (the marriage one). Also, with the debut of awesome reality shows from Hunan, Up Idol, season 3 of Dad, Hua Shao season 2 (the divas on the road thing), more of Happy Camp…this is the year where I’ve finally utterly and completely given up on Kdramas (no…I broke that rule for Healer…was that 2014 or 2015?) and have fallen completely re-in-love with C-ent. (btw haven’t seen Pian Pian Ai Shang Ni yet, Chen Qiao En’s harem…).
This year I’ve discovered so many new favs and rediscovered old favs! Chen Qiao En, Hu Ge, Wang Kai, Yang Yang, Chen Xiang, HXM, Mao XiaoTong, Liu Tao, ZLY, Jin Dong, Ning Jing, Jing Boran, (on the fence about Wang Ou, only cuz I always dislike her characters cuz she’s an excellent antagonist), maybe HuBingQing (depending on if she fails in Legend of Qin), Ouyang Nana, Elvis Han, Gina Jin. And I’ve discovered a love for Republican, anti-Japanese, transition era dramas!
Notice I didn’t mention Legend of Zu, cuz even though ZLY’s pretty awesome and badass, for the amount of anticipation I put in, it’s been so disappointing so far…so disappointing.
Anyways, this year’s been SUCH a good year for the most part, so I’ll be sorry to see it go. At the same time, next year (if the dramas that are supposed to come out actually come out…I hate when they keep getting postponed indefinitely…) will be so anticipated! Hu Ge’s Lie Chang (although I’m a little iffy cuz the drama’s premise isn’t really my type), the Fox/Liao Zhai remake, Xian Jian movie (Hu Ge said in an interview that he won’t be playing the Li XiaoYao from ten years ago, so I’m excited), Xian Jian 5, Zhao ZiLong (2015 or 2016?), this, the MaTianYu fantasy thing, Rouge, and so much more…I can’t remember everything now.
Lol this has turned to be a mental spew of a sort…

And Ode to Joy, and Go Lala 2, and Ady/Qiao Zhen Yu’s E-dream (i forget what the word is).
Lol right now I’m unstoppable.

If I didn’t know any better, I would think this is Yumama’s production. He always photoshops the hell out of the actors in the posters. Kenny looks so handsome!
I love the yellow/orangish costume. Nice. =)

Yumama kills their eyes the most. Lol. Abnormally large fish eyes and all!

I just started watching the Ruby Lin version 2003 version. All I have to say is…it’s alright. I liked the interaction between young Xue Cai Yue and her dad, but that only lasted for so long before he died. And Li Huai is infinitely annoying. So far…I only like Cecilia Han’s character (she plays Leng Xiao Xing who heals/raises Xue Cai Yue after the dad dies…she’s super pretty, she almost looks younger than Ruby IMO). Anyways. Looking forward to Yang Rong, tbh, Ruby’s utterly beautiful, but I’ve never really liked her much (as an actress, idk her real person). Anyways. With Hawick’s unchanging acting and Li Huai’s annoying character…I don’t know if I’ll like this just based off the 2003 version. Will definitely still check it out though.

The depressing thing is, with the whole “power of the flying dagger” thing and Xue Cai Yue’s family swordplay (something about snowflake power or something)…there’s definitely going to be SOOOO much CGI! Especially with the trend now adays. Sadly, I feel like this excessive amount CGI in wuxia series is a trend also started by Yumama…along with the excessively bright neon colors on clothes and unrealistic background/scenic prettyness that looks really fake and the unnecessary photoshop. Now these characteristics are present everywhere…depressing because Wuxia is NOT the same as Fantasy/Wuxia/RPG stuff, but with these current trends, they all look like fantasy…even the classic Wuxia works. (*heh-hem…again, taking the chance to promote the awesomeness Nirvana in Fire…awesome, classic, amazing, NOT-fake, very little CGI, great acting…everything we lack now adays*)
