Cute Little Monk is All Grown Up: Ashton Chen Xiao Long

I just had an embarrassing ride with my parents when they rearranged the basement this past weekend and stumbled upon my middle school…er….artworks? Collages? One of them being of this little monk kid! Do you guys remember his adorable face? He’s known as my little hubby 10+ years ago because everyone assumed he was younger, seeing how we watched his kung fu movies when he was a peanut in the industry. Meet Ashton Chen Xiao Long, known for his roles alongside a lot of big stars as the righteous Shaolin kiddo.

Ashton first burst into the tv scene in Shaolin Popey 1 in 1993 with Jimmy Lin and Ng Man-Tat and thus began his career as a child star in a numerous films and tv dramas the following years. Unlike actors nowadays without a sense about Kung Fu, Ashton started his martial arts training at the age of two at a Shaolin Temple. His stage name Shi Xiao Long is given by his Abbot Shifu. You can watch the movie below.

Shaolin Popey 2: Messy Temple (1994) with Dicky Cheung and Adam Cheng.

In 1997, he was in Dragon from Shaolin with Vivian Hsu and Yuen Biao.

He was also in all three seasons of Young Justice Bao as Zhan Zhao with Zhou Jie, Li Bing Bing, Fan Bing Bing, Lu Yi, and Deng Chao.

My favorite drama of his is still Young Hero Huang Fei Hong in 2002. I fell for him hard. Lol. First potential as a full-grown leading man right here!

His recent drama Invincible Iron Bridge Three (无敌铁桥三) aired a couple of months back and he portrayed Leung Kwan, known as one of the great masters of Hong Fist and part of the top martial artists known as Ten Tigers of Guangdong. Not to mention, one of his friends in Huang Fei Hong (Lol). Compared to the idol actors with lanky body nowadays, Ashton offers a solid, athletic body with real martial art skills. He may not be your conventional handsome man, but he’s a gem in the martial arts world. To be honest, when the movie version of Huang Fei Hong was first announced, I anticipated his name to be thrown around. How awesome would it be to see him reprise his childhood role as an adult? But it ultimately went to Eddie Peng who worked really hard for months. Sigh~ Missed opportunity.

Here he is with his Brother-OTP in movies: Steven Hao.

I read one of his old interviews and found out that at the time, he didn’t want to be in idol dramas and wanted to be known as a real martial arts actor. But it looks like that has changed because he doesn’t seem to be appreciated at all in the past few years. WHY, CHINA? WHY?!

His latest modern drama is Love the Courier (Love Express) with Du Chun and Yan Di. The story follows a bunch of men who work as bicycling couriers. Our hero (Du Chun) is described as good and honest, sunny and optimistic. He meets a match in Yao Di, who’s equally pleasant with a streak of mischievousness. However, the slow burning of romance allows for the appearance of Du Chun’s best friend (Ashton Chen), who falls heads over heels for the lady and begins to pursue her passionately. What would happen to their friendship and bromance?

China, wake up! Use your talents! When I read the news of a possible Bruce Lee and Ip Man drama a while back, I was totally rooting for this boy, but then Korean actor Kim Bum (who I also adore) is confirmed by his agency last week to take on the role of …Bruce Lee, and I’m like…what? WHAT. Fans are gonna support him but the mass public isn’t so easy to please. Bruce Lee is probably flipping in his coffin!

awwwww so cute!! good to know he’s still friends with his chubby friend who is still chubby cute!! =D xiao long is very well-built, i thought he would be famous by now since he was well-known since young. what happened?!!

yea, girl, when i heard of my bummie playing bruce lee, i sighed so much. i love my hubby but he ain’t no bruce lee, okay? he can play an action hero with the help of camera angles and some athleticism, but bruce lee is not your average man, he was a chinese hero in the kung fu cinema before even legends like jackie chan, jet li, etc.

    sigh

Guys, he has an instagram! @ac_superman

I was totally shocked when I found his latest drama ’cause he’s grown so much. My mom adored him because he was so cute and squishy when he was young. She was always saying she wished she had a cute son like that. I’m just like….-________________-

    PS:
Kim Bum as Bruce Lee is an atrocity.

“Bruce Lee is probably flipping in his coffin!” i know, im not supposed to laugh but Kap.. lols.. but, SERIOUSLY?? KIMBUM AS BRUCE LEE?? lmao.. i like him.. after watching his latest drama BUT.. why producer why??? why didnt they cast Chinese? no no.. im not being racist but.. isnt it better to cast C-actors instead of K-actor since Bruce Lee is a C-legend.. i feel sad for Bruce Lee 🙁 i dunno.. just feel sad..

i hope he’s doing well with his modern dramas.. he’s handsome.. i mean.. well.. not my type hehe but he’s good looking, lose some weight and do some exercises and get 6 pack, i bet, he’ll get offered in many movies or dramas. goodluck.. when i was young, i watched him in many movies.. in my country we called it ‘bo bo ho’ hehe

Lol. You were supposed to laugh. =D

Xiao Long is not fat Yui. XD Those are muscles! But because he is on the shorter side, he appears chunkier. And you can see from his new modern drama that he has lost a significant amount of weight + muscles! 🙁

yeah, in his modern drama.. wow.. hottie.. and i like the male lead.. i watched a drama with him as the 2nd male and i ended up liking him more than the male lead.. lols.. -i forget the title of that drama, my bad-

i always has 2nd guy ‘crush’.. but how is his latest modern drama? is it good? i wish to see him in ancient dramas.. thanks to NIF, now i love ancient dramas even with that -bad ending-issue.. 😀

I think it’s cus he went to the US for some schooling. Probably made it easier for people to call him.

I don’t understand the negativity some has for English Nicknames. His real name is still Chen Xiao Long. I merely use his nickname Ashton in the title so his new fans can identify him easily. And like Rin said, the kid studied in the US several times when he was young.

“My favorite drama of his is still Young Hero Huang Fei Hong in 2002. I fell for him hard. ”

LOL. You’re not the only one. I still remember watching that drama on those VHS tapes back in the days ^^ and I pretty much watched it a few times over and over again cus I loved him so much. Maybe it’s time to rewatch it again… if I have time in my life after Nirvana in Fire… Wallace’s new drama… and ten gazillions other kdramas T-T

Anyhow, good to see him back doing dramas. Even if I probably won’t watch this it…

I remember not liking his girl lead very much. LOL. But rewatching it a few months back, I found her adorable as heck!

He’s been cast in a few upcoming dramas as well (modern and wuxia). One of those might fit your taste. Stay tuned, Rin!

I feel ridiculously old just seeing him all grown up ’cause I’m only two years older. LOL. I remember him and his buddy Steven Hao. My grandma loved the both of them.

Hope to see him in more projects !

Shi Xiao Long and Hao Shao Wen taking over the world one movie at a time! They may have grown up and changed their names but they will also be my favorite little boldy combo 🙂

Lol I don’t know whether to thank you or wha Kaptain but I read this 3 days ago and saw a drama that I didn;t know XiaoLong is in, (Invincible Iron Bridge 3) — and thus I started a marathon … and finished it yesterday 😛 I LOVEE THE DRAMA ~ The leading lady is such a kickass and XiaoLong is still so cute :3

It’s gonna be weird seeing him in a modern drama but think it’d be quite interesting. Jia you Chen Xiao Long!

Good for you Soo! And good to know that the story kept you on a train ride with a kickass female lead.

It will be interesting to see him out of his usual kung fu element in a modern drama. 🙂

I thought I was the only one following him…and not even know any Chinese but from watching TV series and movies. I have a YouTube channel (iwnthm) dedicated to him. Like you said it’s a shame that China doesn’t appreciate him. He’s well verse in martial arts but rarely get cast in action movies. Rather they would cast pretty boy actors or ‘famous’ actors to those roles and depend on bad cheesy GCI and dizzy camera angles! It’s sad really.

Hopefully some smart start using him. I’m looking forward to seeing action movies starred him in the near future. He also said he wanted to be an action director so I also hope to see his movies in the future too.

He’s so underused it’s upsetting. I was hoping that Donnie Yen would take this kid under his wings when they starred together, but it didn’t turn out that way. Jackie Chan needs to step up and mold this boy!! He’s young and talented, use him!
