    I said this in the chatbox: the first 2 episodes didn’t impress me that much, although I read somewhere that they’re actually faster paced and more compact than the book. I dislike the use of fish eye lens and the not-so-subtle product placement (everyone driving an Audi!). I’m a bit disappointed with Sandra, she overplays the naivety IMO, and why did Jenny come to the work interview in shorts?

    I must admit that I’ve become less nitpicky starting ep 3 [SPOILER] when the dialogues and the scenes are focused on the murders and the investigation. Wang Kai is HAWT. As for Wallace, so far he plays pretty well. He has good comedic timing, and I think his actual dry wit really helps in portraying Bo Ji Yan.

    havent watched ep 3-4, just download.. tonight.. but so far.. for this 2 episodes. since i just watched first 2 episodes, so.. this is my first impression.. but seriously for me, the entertainment value is on male cast. hahaha.. help me, wangkai and wallace are both so handsome and hawt. but im more into wang kai, since i havent moved on yet from NIF. 😀

    i dunno about others, but so far, still so-so.. cant wait to go home and watch ep 3-4 😀

    Been waiting for this since reading the book in June. Wallace does a good job and Wang Kai is definitely hot stuff. I watched The Disguiser then Lang Ya Bang and now this, so it was nice to see Wang Kai every month as different characters. Loving it!
    @lenje I agree with the fish eye lens and the overused of go-pro cameras. But the advertising of Audi and Apple – makes me laugh every time. I also kind of agree that the first two eps were hard to go through and get attached (heck, same thing as the first ep fo Lang Ya Bang) but I’m gonna hope that as I go on, I’ll be attached to this as I was to Lang Ya Bang. (Still not over the death).

        Hi, sorry I didn’t read it in English but I know there is a fan translation somewhere on a blog. Stumbled upon it by accident.
        I read it in Vietnamese so if you know the language then I’m happy to inform you that they are printed and sold as novels in Vietnamese. Also there is an audiobook for it of your reading is weak

        No no, everything is okay with your uploads (thank you so much!). The “problem” is that the files are HEVC/h265 encodes, not 264. Those who can’t see the video are probably using an older player/codec pack. hello, just update all your video playing related software, or dunno, try mpc-hc, vlc player or potplayer. Just a warning, if your computer is rather old the video might lag.

          Oh. I’m so sorry. I was testing out a few things and left the encoding part the same so now it’s in x265. The quality and filesize is amazing but not many people are on board yet so I’ll revert back to x264 for future uploads.

          Honestly I don’t see any problem with using x265, people just might need a software/video player update which is not rocket science 🙂 But I think I can safely say that we’re all happy and extremely grateful to you either way 🙂 (I totally love the drama btw!)

    General impression: very bland. In everything. Story so far is ok. Chemistry – really, really bad. I can not think of two characters, regardless of relations between them, that I look forward to see on screen together. Everyone looks drugged and/or uninterested. Acting – same. So far noting impressive, everyone does their job ok but nobody stands out. I wish Sandra Ma would speak louder and drop this perpetually stunned expression. Directing: nothing worth writing about. I agree that product placement is obnoxious but they have to make money somehow I guess… Entertainment value: enough to keep me watching for now. I might drop it if things don’t get interesting soon.

      I agree their chemistry left a lot to be desired. I don’t see how they can force the pairing. Four episodes in, I don’t see any spark between them. As for the case of the week, I’m nonplus by it’s brevity. Where is the gore, the thrill, the creeps? And why did the perp run away? Simon doesn’t even look like a cop! At most, he looks like a suspiciously well-dressed man visiting a run-down hardware store. Sigh… I shouldn’t have expected a Chinese drama to be on par with American crime shows.

    I suppose I’m the only one who is actually enjoying the drama right now. =P

    I know there are people who are wondering about the Audi car, Andy. For me, it’s a homage to Ding Mo’s sci-fi novels because the robots in them are like him. Of course it may just be me imagining things but I’m sure it was included in the drama not only for promotional reasons. Besides, Bo Jin Yan has super low EQ (more like zero) so to have Andy (and Fu Zi Yu) around is a good way to help balance that out. If that makes sense.

    Not sure if anyone has listened to the radio drama to the novel but Jian Yao (Jenny) sounds soft in that too. I don’t know if it’s just the impression that the character gives off. If anything, Wallace also sounds soft to my ears too.

    Also, I’ve read that the Sohu version of the drama is the cut version. I haven’t found any other versions of it though. *shrugs*

      I’m also really liking the drama too. I haven’t read the novel yet, so I can’t compare, but i’m loving it so far. I guess it’s my type of drama. I’m currently loving investigation/crime dramas (watching achiara’s secret and cheo yong 2 as well) ^^

          I felt the pace was too slow at the beginning but it seems to have picked up a bit now at ep 7-8. Or maybe I just enjoyed it more because I really liked that interrogation scene. That was awesome 🙂

          LOL having watched and loved Nirvana and Disguiser so much, it was so funny and strange seeing all these familiar faces again but in a different setting … I was so amused seeing Jingyan/Ah Cheng interrogating Xie Yu/Dufeng and Xiaoxin and Liang Chuzhang hahaha 🙂

      I love this drama too. Rarely watch cdramas but this is just right for me. Good production, plot and pace in my opinion.

    Having read the book and watching Shang Dong’s latest productions (LYB and The Disguiser) I had really high hopes for this drama. However the first 4 episodes so far have not impressed me. Despite the awesome cast there is absolutely no chemistry between the characters, mainly because Sandra Ma has no chemistry with either of the males and no one else really interacts with each other. The lines are all delivered softly and blandly despite the actual dialogue being meaningful.

    I understand that Wallace Huo is supposed to have an EQ of 0 and not understand basic social interactions but at the very least Wang Kai and Sandra Ma should have more spark and liveliness. I can’t see how they are going to develop the relationship between Wallace and Sandra.

    But the cases are interesting and well Wang Kai gets screen time and he finally has a character that smiles so I’m probably going to keep watching…even if only just to see Wang Kai smile.

    Now that I’m already at ep 8 (thanks BIG TIME Viki, for the lightening-speed subbing!), the show has become much more enjoyable, with the focus on the investigations. I applaud Wallace for his dry-wit, but am still not feeling him and Sandra. To be honest, although Jin Yan’s antics are quite amusing to watch, in real life a guy like him will be a total turn-off to me, LOL. I’m rooting hard for Xue Ran, but I understand why Yao Yao isn’t interested in him — it’s female psychology. If you grew up with him, he never looks hot to you, until someone else wants him too 😉

    It also feels pretty surreal to see the other actors from NiF in the drama. The actor who plays Xie Yue looks a lot younger in modern garb, although his character is rather icky. I chuckled seeing the actor who plays the Crown Prince.

    Anyway, time for nitpicking (ouch): Jenny’s apartment. Although it’s a studio, it looks like one of the more expensive ones. Can a fresh graduate afford it? The layout is quite weird too. No kitchen (so Jenny must cook in the bathroom), but there’s a separate dressing room? Jenny is a typical newly employed, spending more time for decoration than for a layout that works :D. I had to urge to shout to her to check Apartment Therapy for ideas, LOL. (Does HGTV broadcast in China?)

      If I remember correctly, Jenny’s studio is RMB2000/mth which is probably feasible in a T2 or T3 city in China.

    I LOVE THIS SHOW!

    i love how Simon and Yao Yaon interacted with each other. i grinned ear to ear watching them together. well… i love Wang Kai’s character, but i couldnt help but falling for wallace’s character, simon.
    he’s adorable… and i ship him with the female lead so hard!!!

    im glad that they came to each other lives so smooth. his expressions when him with her were soooo on point. ah, not a fan of wallace but seriously… his acting is superB!!!!

    so far so good… and i cant wait for the next episodes!!!

    Despite the flak that Sandra gets here for her portrayal, I still find her tolerable to watch. Just slightly disappointed that she’s not as good as she was in Fiancée where she was great as Lan Xiaoyi. I’d still rather watch her than the higher paid actresses who can’t act. 😛

    There’s definitely a deviation from the novel and I’m starting to wonder what Haiyan is up to. Especially with Fu Ziyu and Jin Yan’s sister whose name escapes me right now. Er, that’s rather a peculiar change.

    Wallace…well, let’s just say that I’d rather watch him here than the clusterfudge that was Hua Qian Gu lol. But his most brilliant role for me is still Gu Qingming from Battle of Changsha. I mean, he is OK as Bo Jinyan, but it’s just not his best work imo.

      I haven’t read the original novel so I have no idea what’s changed and what’s not, but the plot here is wandering everywhere with really choppy/uneven pacing.

      Hua Qiangu is nothing more than a Goddamn effing mess from start to finish. The only thing worth watching in that epic piece of s*** is Ma Ke and Zhang Danfeng. [/forever bitter]

      I made a post on another thread, stating my disappointment and confusion of Sandra Ma’s acting in LMIYD. I still believe she is talented, and her Golden Horse nomination for the Left Ear (in Best Supporting Actress category) is a testament to her talent (she had also previously won the China Film Society of Performing Art Award for Best New Actress for another movie).

      So I suspect one of the reason she, IMO, underperformed in LMIYD (or at least not on par with her other works) is probably the script. Hai Yan did a tremendous job in Nirvana in Fire. But she was adapting her own novel, so she knew what she wanted others to see, and of course she understood her characters. Whereas in LMIYD she was interpreting another writer’s work. The drama is bound to have changes, although I read that Shandong usually tries to get as close as possible to the original novel(s).

      Heck, we discussed this before on TJOF threads, about the differences between the novel and the adaptation. Many novel readers/fans will tend to give explanations from the novel when the drama adaptation is criticized by some viewers. But if the drama adaptation feels choppy or has lots of plot holes (esp by viewers who never read the said novels), then the scriptwriters, the directors, or the editors don’t do their job well enough.

        I agree with you, lenje. I’ve watched her act before and it’s nothing like her portrayal in LMIYD.

        For the most part, the drama is sticking to the novel. Of course there are some changes but I think you’ve brought up a good point about understanding characters. It seems like right now Haiyan understands a lot about Bo Jin Yan, but not so much about Jian Yao so she appears to be more flat. It’s also kind of how she was in the book for me, to be honest.

        Overall the drama right now feels choppy, especially last week’s episodes. I keep wondering if it’s because we’re watching a cut version. But it seems to me that’s how Haiyan wrote it.

          But apparently the Sohu (internet) version is already the uncut version. (The TV versions cut even more)

          I find the plot choppy and wanders everywhere. It’s so confusing and doesn’t flow like mysteries/police procedurals should. Especially with the way they only air 2 eps per week, they really need to make the plot connect well or otherwise audience would just forget what the hell happened before and be lost as to what the hell is happening now.
