The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

It’s my breaking point for this series.I wonder what overcame the writer to plan out the story this way. She builds up all these interesting, conflicted, and very much likable characters and then rapidly kills them off one-by-one, leaving literally only a batch of ugly villains behind. Am I supposed to care after all my characters are gone? AM I? If she’s trying to tell me that being the top dog is the loneliest job, she has already succeeded with the male characters, no need to force the young girl into the same position by being more cruel than necessary. I have a bad feeling that the demon goddess will disappoint me in more than one way…

Yass. As the drama comes to an end, I’m super disappointed at the pacing of the drama. We barely get any good epic/angst scene until the last 10 or so episodes, especially how we only going to get 4 episode max of Demon God QianGu! So much for hopes of 10+ episodes of it! Out of 58 episodes we only get 4 episode of QianGu in her true form. ??

  3. 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

im so pissed off! such a great character like dong fang is killed by the most despicable man of this drama, MO YAN?!!! that is an INSULT to his character.

and i cannot stand the hypocritical chang liu brothers anymore, that is mo yan and bai zi hua. in his own words, right is right, wrong is wrong, how many damn wrong things have his people committed that he has always overlooked? wu gou killed not 1 but 5 sect leaders, but did BZH do anything? nope, all he said was go confess. mo yan secretly sent qian gu away and not once but twice played dirty to attempt at her life but again he said NOTHING. when qian gu and her friends do anything remotely harmless, they are looked down and punished. what’s wrong with these righteous people?!!

i don’t even care about hua qian gu anymore, judging from those pictures of her cuddling shifu in her demon form. that’s what you do after all your friends died to tell you to STAY AWAY FROM BAI ZI HUA? YOU SAW WHAT HE DID!

and again with the isolation technique. really? that’s all you can do for her? shes been isolated her whole life, then she meets you and gets isolated again in the emotionless palace, and now that all her friends are mostly killed/are in dangerous hands, you gonna locked her up? omg. then you have the audacity to tell that new girl to accompany her? WOW. so sweet. she knows nothing about this girl. you could at least get tang bao. this drama is infuriating. im done watching it.

    sayonara friends!

Spot on, frea. I didn’t think much of it, but yes, Wu Gou did a big crime, yet he could get away with it. Yes, he committed suicide later on, but that’s not the reason NOT to question BZH’s soft approach. And I don’t remember if the other sect leaders ever asked BZH and HQG the result of their “investigation”.

What I don’t understand about BZH is, he’s supposed to be this highly intelligent person. It is said he keeps thinking on how best to protect HQG discreetly. He’s always been suspicious to DF, yet he never seems to see NMT’s hatred, despite the fact that all of the jealousy and rivalry happened under his nose. I don’t remember if he even suspected one of the Chang Liu students was a spy. OK, to be fair, none of the 3 leaders were aware of it.

      • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

It is out of convenience and weak writing to me. When the plot requires Bai Zi Hua to be smart – he knows everything (Qian Gu’s being the descendant of Nuwa (all without a drop of explanation), knowing about Dong Fang’s identity, etc), when the plot wants him to be stupid – he simply doesn’t know a thing (how am I to believe that the one who should KNOW about all the deity devices, doesn’t know the function of the Flaming Crystal? REALLY?). Inconsistent writing, much?

A blind man could feel Ni Man Tian’s hatred from day 1. He acts like he doesn’t know anything, which really doesn’t make sense cause he stalks her almost everywhere. Lol.

If HQG teaches me anything, it’s that, novel-turned-adaptations should be looked upon more carefully for good writing. Fans jump the gun so often saying that this book is good/that book is good and everyone generally assumes the drama will be just as good. I didn’t read the novel and judging from the writing, I wouldn’t. It’s juvenile and built upon an obsession. I feel like she wanted to make it epic through ONE MEANS – by torturing the main girl as much as possible without ever giving her a chance to become her own skin, until everyone around her is dead. Too late. That is poor character development and the manipulation of the audience feelings and trust.

        • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Well, that’s why adaptation is an adaptation and not a direct retelling. 🙂 A good adaptation can build upon the strengths of the source material and compensate for its weaknesses. This particular adaptation is soo bad, whatever flaws the original novel had, I wish we had those and not whatever this is (coughweeklynmt/myadvertisementscough).

Btw, speaking of Conveniently Stupid Shifu, did he ever remember all that kissy stuff QG made him forget? Yes?No? Did I FF too much and skipped it by accident?

    • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Yeah, the ” right is right, wrong is wrong” thing is so weird to me. Mo Yan also killed one of his disciple who saw BZH kiss/bite HQG to silence him right? THey didn’t show us what happened but I assumed he killed him. How can that kind of person passed the water test? HE’s known to have hot temper. I don’t buy that water test. If it’s really effective how can people like NMT and that disciple who killed SQM sister can enter Chiang Liu.

Also about Dong Fang Father, didn’t one of BZH friend who stay with DF finally admitted that they were wrong to kill DF father and feel guilty about it? I still don’t get what happened with DF father though. What actually happened?

The thing about this drama is that I don’t buy the good and the bad guy in this drama. Like why Chang liu supposed to be the good guy and why Sha Qian Mo supposed to be the bad guy. All I see from BZH and Chiang Lu is they punish people all the time but what good do they do to the world? Why are they the one who deserve to dictate the world with their rules? All I see from Sha Jie Jie is how he willing to do anything to protect his loved ones but never see he try to destroy the world and do bad things. Maybe his subordinates but not him and he punished his subordinate when they do things like that. Is it explained in the books? I’m confused

        about the burning water:

The way they are shown in the tv show (and judging by spoilers also in the books) these pools are a really ineffective selection system. When QG first bathed in them, she was pure and innocent and nothing happened. Later, ZX got into her head that she is in love with her shifu and she started hurting. Similarly, MY splashes BZH with water – nothing. Later, he becomes jealous and starts burning. Therefore, you must be aware of your feelings and their forbidden nature to fall under the spell of the water. If we follow that logic, however, only two kinds of people could enter Chang Liu: saints and morally depraved psychopaths. Sprinkle in between them some “complicated” villains JieJie (<3) and Dong Fang and you get a pretty accurate picture of the basic personalities of most of the characters.

  4. 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

I knew it was coming, it still hurts nonetheless. :(((( His last words to Hua Qian Gu sums it up, “You must live on, even if the world doesn’t love you, you must love yourself.” He understands HQG the most, her inner insecurity, her constant need to get BZH’s approval.

I don’t know what else to say, since I’m still mourning. Never thought I’d grew attached to a fictional character. Anyway, kudos to Zhang Dan Feng for making this a memorable character. I never heard of him before, and I never read the book prior to the drama. But he was successful in portraying a complex villain, who is sympathetic and likeable despite his scheming way. He and Ma Ke make me care for their characters.

I dropped this at Ep 3 itself but thanks to your recaps, I could get an idea of what’s going on. I knew that this series is going to be a disappointment despite all the ads and hoo-haa about it. Personally, I am not a fan of the writer as well. I am currently following Wu Xin and am finding Wu Xin a much worthy investment of my time and definitely a much better series. Come join me at Team Wu Xin! 🙂

    • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

I’m on Team Wu Xin! 🙂

HQG dragged out way too long for me so I dropped it around the 20s. I only managed to make it so far because of Sha Jiejie and DF but even they couldn’t make it watchable for me.

      • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

TBH I stopped watching somewhere around the episode 18-19 mark. Plot was too draggy and my fave Sha Jiejie and Dongfang had too little screen time to keep me interested. Reading the recaps was more entertaining LOL

I’m hoping someone eventually makes a cut of just Sha Jiejie and Dongfang scenes, then I can just watch that, cuz Sha Jiejie and Dongfang are totally awesome and I’d love to watch them! 🙂

    • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

I should’ve listened to you and continued with Wu Xin instead. That drama needs faster sub so I can talk about it! I saw Mike’s appearance yesterday! And I miss Lord Gu and his dorky face. Of course, our OTP is super cute too. =)

Awww~~~It’s not too late to jump ship, Kap! Yes, I was happy to finally see Mike’s character….but that also mean things are starting to get real interesting in the episodes to come. Come join us ‘Heartless’ peeps! 😉

  6. 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

I agree with Kel – the pacing is crap. But I think I’ll just sit here and wait for the DVD version to come out soon because that’s where the uncut scenes of the uncut episodes will be. i.e neck biting and a happy ending that Wallace Huo hinted during a press conference. 🙂
I’ll just continue to live stream these eps as a supporting action from a fan and ease my craving.
On that note – Kap, are the uncut eps you post the ones from the DVD?
    Just curious 🙂

    • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

supposedly it is the dvd version but since hunan the big gun announced cutting of those biting scenes, no one i allowed to air them. no one can fight against hunan when they want to do something.

happy ending? if there’s a happy ending, it would air on tv, as they have no reason to cut it. i didn’t hear of any alternate endings at all.

      • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Thanks for answering about it and I’m not surpirse about the amount that has been removed due to Hunan tv and censorship.
About the happy ending, spoiler alert, I heard that they might make it a kind of bad ending/open ending so they can move to future times. Like think One Startling step 2 with liu shi shi and Nicky Wu after the first one, except neither of the actors agreeing to sign onto the next script. I don’t know, that was just speculation I read but I guess we’ll know soon enough! 😀

  8. 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Soo, due to work stuff I wasn’t able to watch Monday’s episodes. And then, I wake up today and everyone is a mess. 🙁 even hardcore fans at soompi are dropping this. Must be truly horrible. 🙁 I’ll write again after I see everything but, for now, i have the following statements to make:
My apologies to the actors that play NMT and MY. I will not watch anything with you in it. Probably for a looong, loong time or never. I know it’s not your fault but the negative associations are too strong. Sorry!
I am not ever, ever going to watch dramas as they air again. Only after complete versions are out and I am spoiled about the beginning, middle and the ending. Thank you, HQG, for reminding me why I do this with kdramas and teaching me to do it with cdramas. This means no Nirvana of Fire and Legend of Zu until later next year. I am quite ok with that as there is old stuff I want to see anyway.
I was truly mistaken about the way censorship and editing works in China. I thought that production companies must provide scripts and stuff to SARFT for approval even before they start shooting. Meaning, the team can work out the story and shoot it well before airing time. In my innocent mind this meant that, at least, we can see a somewhat complete and coherent plot and character development in chinese tv shows because they are not burdened with the live shoot system that f*cks up so many dramas in Korea. Ohh, how wrong I was. It turns out, SARFT not only edits stuff before shooting, they edit it after the episodes are shot and ready, and then, the tv channels that air the shows edit them again!?! Wtf?! How do they end up with something watchable after all this cutting and rearranging is beyond me. BUT, it does explain some of the weirdness I’ve seen in dramas, HQG including.
Ok, now off to work. See you, folks!

    • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Lol. You poor innocent soul, Nell. When production teams submit their works to SARFT, it’s only a draft stating simple details about cast, number of episodes, production time, etc. Only a short and very vague synopsis is included. The completed drama stays complete until they are slotted for a premiere time and SARFT people get their hands on them. Next, the broadcast station chops up the episodes to fit their schedule. Most of the time, online websites can air uncut version unless they’re bullied by bigger channels/SARFT and can only air full uncut after the drama is finished running on tv.

The good news is.. while Chinese dramas are editted a lot while airing, some time later, maybe a year or two after, these dramas are picked up by smaller tv stations and they get to air full episodes. By then, most fans don’t care anymore. Lol. The easier option is to buy the DVDs. The last option is to wait for the drama to air in a different country where regulations are not as strict. The same happened to poor Empress of China with more than five versions floating around. XD

  9. 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

After finishing Episode 46 I’m so totally over this whole crap lol. It’s such a mess! All those people are a bunch of hypocrites! Do they really have nothing better to do than torture a poor girl? I’m sick of BZH’s “Right is right, wrong is wrong.” It’s become so repetitive and even when it’s not entirely HQG’s fault and he knows but he still acts like that! I could possibly forgive all the other times he was being so heartless but not after episode 46 when he stabbed her because by now he should know the full story of why she did all those things. And why is he secluding her again? I really don’t understand his logic. I really agree with her, he should just kill her to end all of this madness.

NMT is a total nut job, what’s with her obsession in continuously trying to kill HQG. She didn’t even kill her father… It was satisfying seeing her being flung back by BZH. And that MY, why is he so hateful…doesn’t he have anything better to do.

DF dying was sad but I never really liked him much until the last few episodes. I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw this scene though

Dong Fang…. my heart pains for you dear!! His death pained me the most because he was also losing his five senses as a trade to help/protect Qian Gu. His life troll said he wouldn’t die a peaceful death and he didn’t. That girl left his body there!! In the end, he and Sha Jie Jie showed the most change of heart and became the most devoted, selfless people. No wonder why people like them so much.

    *chokes on tears*

I cried so hard when the stupid bastard palm strike him!! UGHHH. I got madder when Bai Zi Hua stopped Qian Gu from taking revenging. OMG. The saying “Birds of the same feather protect each other” is true and Bai Zi Hua is no different no matter the pretense he puts up with Right is Right and Wrong is Wrong. Anyone who is on the so called “righteous side” get away with murdering, cheating, shading, attacking with no punishment, but if ANYONE from the Seven Murder Faction merely lifts up a finger, they are automatically deem as wrong and a threat. I can’t deal with these hypocrites anymore. DONE!

And the demon goddess? No hopes for her either with her hugging and flirting with Shifu. BLEH. I want to see a crazy sad ending since all the people I care didn’t get a happy ending, none shall have one!!!

Ni Man Tian is gonna kill Tang Bao next….

*runs in a corner to cry*

    DF x QG MV 2

    DF x QG MV 3

DF x QG BTS/NG They are so cute together!

This 10-minuter NG video I found on youtube. Spoiler Alert.

    • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Awww… thanks Kap! I was going to post a video, but yours here are way much better! I like the first one most, because I love the badass DF.

I think why the character stands out for me is because he’s never boring. He’s funny, dorky, smart, caring (though only to HQG and perhaps his browless assistant), mischievous, and on the other side (or the other face, to be exact) he’s cold, evil, manipulative and calculating. He fell in love with HQG, but it didn’t automatically make him change his plan. Instead, he became very creative and did a lot of adjustments, so that he could reach his goal, but at the same time spared HQG from pain. His revenge plan is not something to praise for, but I like it that he’s very focused, and — unlike HQG — he’s not reckless. Everything is carefully thought of, even when he knows he’s dying.

Like someone says above, and I believe this is something we have discussed a lot in previous posts, the people from the bad or grey sects are the humane ones — Sha Jiejie, Dong Fang, even SCQ + Mr. Vein Face, while the actual villains are the leaders of the “good” sects, Mo Yan and Ni Man Tian. This said, personally these secondary characters are much more interesting (even if I want to shred Mo Yan and NMT to pieces), while the OTP are either boring or frustrating.

      • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Right? I love seeing scenes of Dong Fang in his badass self but the video is so short, and so were his scenes. 🙁

You listed all the reasons I like in Dong Fang. He was so dynamic and convincing in whatever “version” he wanted to present to the world. And yet we can sympathize with him because he changed and developed over the course of the story. When he knew that revenge was taking away more from him than he could afford, he didn’t pursue it stubbornly. Many characters can learn from him. AHUM. AHUM.

People of the righteous sects. I’m sure they give themselves that title while sitting in a dark chamber and torturing some innocent soul. Mo Yan’s head needs to be spiked on a pole. Man Tian could go right next to him. So insufferable these two.

        • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Nice to see some fellow Dongfang fans here! 😀
So glad to see I’m not alone! 🙂

Dongfang is such a complex character and he’s such a close second after my fave Sha Jiejie (and only because Jiejie is hilarious and more fun). I love how badass DF is and even though he manipulated HQG, he was always there to help her when she needs it and still sacrificed for her in the end. That redeems him in my book 🙂

LOL you pinpointed the characters I most hated in this story! Mo Yan and Mantian should’ve been killed off but unfortunately Mo Yan doesn’t die and still gets to be a respected Elder (WTF THERE IS NO JUSTICE!!!) at the end. This is one the things that most annoyed me about the book.

Totally agree – Dongfang and Sha Jiejie had too little screen time. I want to see more of them, dammit!

    • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

“Gu Tou, you have to live on. Even if no one in this world loves you, you need to love yourself.”
“In this world, all the sects were within my schemes. And the only thing that I was unable to account for was your kindness.”
“I don’t want to go, I can’t bear to leave. I want to carry on protecting you, to continue embracing you and see you receive the happiness you deserve. It’s a shame, I can’t wait any longer.”

Dong Fang, even in your last minutes, you still give her courage and wish her happiness. You’re the only mortal there, yet you’re the first to cover your beloved one. You’re the best, dude. And I hate it that the only time when HQG wants to do something meaningful for you, the person she worships stops her. And your body is left there on the steps, WTH??? How am I supposed to sympathize with, err, that old man?? Yeah, he’s thousands of years old, that’s OLD. *sobs uncontrollably*

      • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Throwing his body in harm’s way to protect his little Gu Tou has always been in his blood. We should’ve counted! =(

His body lying at Chang Liu. A disgrace to all!! So upsetting, I’m hoping that someone buried him properly…

  12. 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

All hail the Glorious Demon Goddess !!! :)))

Final salutes for TB and ZX. 🙁

How the hell are some people still alive?! At least one of them should have been gone by now…

    • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Tangbao’s death was soo sad. I got the chills when Qian Gu transform! Took long enough! Can’t wait for tmr’s episodes with BZH cutting off his scar in front of Qian Gu..oh dear. All the angst!

      • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

Also BZH’s face when QianGu broke off ties..! He’s experiencing all these new emotions that he’s never felt before and it looks like he’s starting to go crazy from everything that is happening.

        • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

IKR, the powers that be finally bestowed some much needed character development upon our OTP. 🙂 They were also allowed to communicate. Like, directly, face to face, and not just think about the other person in their heads. 😀 It’s a day of miracles!

        • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

how many times are they planning on breaking off ties? didnt they break if off once already when he stabbed her in the chest right before mo yan killed dong fang. lol….

        • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

good question. I ask myself every time when BZH says something about her being his disciple. I thought he kicked her out right before she stole the items to save him. Weren’t the ties between them already broken after that?

        • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

oh you’re right nell! forgot about that kick-out-of-emotionless-palace moment too. zi hua said that way too many times now to count – literally and symbolically.

  13. 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

disappointed with demon goddess as expected…. she better do something crazy for me cause right now, she’s all talk. the lame excuse of not killing man tian because of her promise to shuo feng is stupid! did you see the smug on Man tian’s face when she stabbed tang bao? the girl is a psycho and the longer she lives, the more people she will kill. WAIT, no one is left to kill. LOL!!

  14. 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

It’s the only time when she cut ties with him. During the sword stabbing part the bell broke but QianGu held on to her emotions. After Tangbao’s death, it cause QianGu so much pain that she finally cut ties with BZH. That’s why BZH was so shocked by it because he never thought that QianGu will actually call it quit especially when it concerned their relationship.

    • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

i should correct my wording… the bell represents their apprenticeship and the bell broke during his stabbing… it’s a symbolic gesture of their broken ties, more so on zi hua’s side since he did the stabbing…

  15. 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

While I like the Demon Goddess’s demeanor, IMO this series sadly in general doesn’t paint women in favorable light. The heroine and a fairy are obsessed with the same guy. The heroine, while “brave”, is impulsive and reckless, and stubborn (I refer to Kappy’s comment of “AHUM. AHUM” above :))). One woman is obsessed with power and acknowledgement and plainly, inexplicably evil, the other one is obsessed with the emperor. None have character development. Tang Bao is prolly the most likable female character, but it’s only because of her cuteness (personally I don’t like TB in human form, as I found it annoying. But I see in general she’s a favorite character).

You know, Huang Rong isn’t really my favorite character. I think she’s a spoiled brat. But she ain’t no damsel in distress. She’s the alpha female, the one who protects Guo Jing through her skills and her intelligence. There should be a lot more characters like her.

By the way, Kappy has said it way, way earlier. BZH is the damsel in distress in this series. Everyone runs to protect or save him, directly or indirectly, while he vomits blood all the time.

  16. 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

    @frea:
I thought that the Demon Goddess was ok considering she gets such limited screen time. The last 10-12 episodes move the story at such great speed that they don’t have the time to develop anything really. The changes happen so fast that both we and the characters are thrown in one situation after another without any time to comprehend and appreciate the impact of the events. Now, what reeeeeeeeaaaally, really disappoints me is that QG doesn’t get any justice for all the wrongs done against her and her friends. Even BZH makes excuses for NMT/MY. Wtf, dude?! What happened to right is right, wrong is wrong?

    @lenje:
Which version of the LOCH would you recommend? I keep hearing interesting things about HR but my impression on her from both versions of the ROCH I’ve seen is that she is really petty and spiteful.

    • 48 thoughts on “The Journey of Flower (Hua Qian Gu): Episode 45 – 48 “Breaking Point.”

      @Nell:
I would personally recommend the 1982 version. A close second, the 2008 version. As for HR, I like both Barbara Yung and Ariel. I might very, very slightly prefer Ariel, just because she exudes more youthful vibe. But IMO both were excellent in portraying the very smart (bordering genius), mischievous, carefree, self-centered, and rather evil HR. Like I said, a spoiled brat. It’s only because of Guo Jing that she starts to think of other people, instead of just herself.

Huang Rong is the best female character Jin Yong ever created, and contrary to her characterization in ROCH, she is smart, capable, honorable, and a damn awesome heroine. Of course she is beautiful, but her awesome talents are much more noteworthy. She and Guo Jing are an epic team full stop. TV adaptations always make her seem like a bitch when she really isn’t – she has good reason to be wary of Yang Guo, mainly because of Yang Kang, but she later realizes that Yang Guo is a GOOD GUY and that she should’ve had more faith in him, and she helped him and Xiaolongnu to reunite after 16 years of separation

Totally agree with lenje’s recommendation! Barbara Yung is the best Huang Rong all-around, but Ariel does a great job too. Both are excellent in their roles, especially Barbara since it was her first acting role ever (and she totally nailed it).

The 1982 version of Condor Heroes is a well-known classic with the best all around acting (like EVERYONE is awesome in their roles and played their characters beautifully) and the script is the closest one to the novel in all TV adaptations. The 2008 version changed SO MUCH STUFF OMG, but the acting by Hu Ge (who is excellent as Guo Jing) and Ariel are wonderful, and this 2008 version also has the most sympathetic Ouyang Ke ever LOL.

LOL, Shimo, why am I not surprised how hard you fangirl Huang Rong? 😀

I slightly disagree with the “awesome” part, am hesitant with “honorable” (still think she’s spoiled, LOL), but everything else is what I’d describe of HR. Let’s just say she has a unique upbringing, by an eccentric father who has his own moral code, and prior to Guo Jing she spends most of her time in the secluded Peach Blossom Island.

Agree, Hu Ge is excellent as Guo Jing. It’s different from Felix Wong’s portrayal (which I LOVE), but great nonetheless. Oh, I also became a fan of the 2008 version of Ou Yang Ke, LOL. Li Jie was fantastic 🙂
