Palace drama Jin Xiu Wei Yang reunites Tang Yan and Luo Jin

Reported in batch 13 of our bi-weekly Cnews, Luo Jin has officially signed up to play opposite good friend, Tang Yan, in the upcoming novel-to-drama adaption of Jin Xiu Wei Yang (Translation anyone? CHI: 锦绣未央) written by Jian Qin. These two are never gonna be apart. EVER. Lol. No wonder why there are/were dating and wedding rumors between the two of them once in a while. The paps are gonna be up in their business now with this new project together. Book fans are not reacting very kindly to the story changes. In the tv version – our female lead becomes a mellower princess protected by at least three men in her life, but in the book, she’s strong, scheming, cunning, and eventually rises to the position of an Empress. Briefly, our heroine is a princess of Northern Wei but due to a tragedy, she escapes her palace and is saved by the abandoned and unloved second daughter of an influential Deputy. To fulfill her savior’s wish, our heroine assumes her identity as Li Wei Yang and returns to the girl’s family to live among her enemies.

First look at Tang Yan’s wardrobe. Fans say she resembles Yoona.

Geez I wonder why. So glad I haven’t read this book or I’d probably be puking blood just like those poor novel fans. So rare to find a story with a strong female lead what does the TV version do? Make it into YET ANOTHER shoujo reverse harem schtick with a helpless female protected by all these men who just revolve around her for no other reason than because she’s the female lead. FFS can’t these Goddamn scriptwriters come up with something DIFFERENT for a change? Or better yet, why not just stick with the book version with the strong heroine?!

I’m so sick of this perpetuating BS brainwashing girls into thinking that their worth is determined by the men in their lives. Why can’t we have more stories showing the bonds of sisterhood or stories of strong female characters who can stick up for themselves? I’m so done with this patriarchy BS ISTG >:(

Not to mention (I believe according to the synopsis of the book), the guy who made her his queen supposedly betrayed her because he was in love with her half-sister or something like that. When I originally read of this news on cdramadevottee, I went to check out what the novel was about (it’s a really really long one from what I could tell) and comparison of that synopsis with the storyline written here on avirtualvoyage and cdramadevottee suggests there are major deviations.

Amen to this! We need more kickass heroines. Now I’m just hoping that the heroine will grow a backbone. Sure, start off as a distressed damsel but please learn to be a strong, kickass woman.

Word!! And when a strong female character emerges, she will be made into a bitch, who is super jealous and will always harm the heroine LOL. It really is about time to have a kickass female lead, who is independent, not necessarily in a relationship, and if she does, let’s not make that her first and only relationship before she commits herself (if she wants to).

So agree for sisterhood! (And I’m not talking about the Sex in the City or Tiny Times types).

Totally agree with all the comments above!

      STRONG FEMALE =/= BITCH

Get that through your heads, scriptwriters! I wanna see independent women on my television! Women who are capable and confident with a backbone who don’t need to pander to men or be backstabbing bitches fighting over men’s affections! Women are so much more than just objects of lust or affection. Enough with these Goddamn 傻白甜 and bitchy cat fights!

I wanna see girls sticking with each other and supporting each other, beautiful bonds of sisterhood and friendship that show the compassion and strength of women. Not the stuff like Sex in the City or Tiny Times, but badass ladies like Joan Watson, Natasha Romanov, Peggy Carter who can be compassionate but also don’t take no shit from nobody. I wanna see ladies like the Hua Mulan of history who took on invading armies and won all her wars and came back as a war hero. THESE are the sorts of female representation we should be seeing more of, not the backwards misogynistic tropes that are in almost EVERY Cdrama these days!

You know, I really miss characters like Ruo Xi from Bu Bu Jing Xin. She wasn’t very well-liked but you have to admit that she had a brain and that she wasn’t afraid to use it. She knew what she wanted even if she had to go against her man or break up with one. Granted she is from the future but it was so refreshing to see someone assimilate without losing her values and catering to a man’s every whim.

What’s also upsetting is that a lot of these scriptwriters are women themselves. How can you churn out 傻白甜 heroine one after another without questioning whether women IRL are like that? I get that they think viewers want to see a relatable heroine but surely they must know there are hella strong women around them that deserve to have their stories told onscreen.

Actually I quite liked Ruo Xi! She’s smart and has backbone, and even though she loves and supports her man she won’t discard all her morals and principles for him. She may be in love but she retains her character and her integrity. That’s what I like to see in female characters! 🙂

I totally agree – it’s even worse when it’s women who write women like 傻白甜! Like for God’s sake, as a female writer, you should have more insight into how women actually are, right? I can’t understand why it’s always one 傻白甜 after another because I personally can’t relate to these characters AT ALL. I find them annoying and frankly, they do most of us girls a terrible injustice because most women in real life are NOT 傻白甜!

Excited about the pairing because they are cute together.

Not so excited about the change. No more 傻白甜 heroines please.

i remember weeks ago when you said han dong and luo jin are in talks. han dong might be signing after all too!!

my friend read this story and the female lead after being betrayed, was locked up in the cold palace for many years!! she lived through it all and came out a stronger AKA NASTIER version. this could’ve been a challenging role for tang yan…she played many sweet characters so far….hope they don’t change that part!! eeee!!

I’ve never read or heard of the novel version but just hearing this news makes me angry. Why can’t they make the heroine kickass?! As much as I like Tang Yan, she needs to play a stronger role, something different from her sweet, damsel in distress characters. This would have been such a great opportunity for her to challenge herself if they didn’t change the story for the drama adaptation. -.-

Is there an English translation available for the novel?

    • 13 thoughts on “Palace drama Jin Xiu Wei Yang reunites Tang Yan and Luo Jin

unfortunately no, this is not one of those famous novels with english translations, but methinks tang yan’s fans might translate it to English since she’s the lead.

    My 2 cents:

This is a major reason why, even with my limited chinese skills, I prefer to watch ancient dramas. Damsels in distress were the norm back then, it was what is expected and culture/religion demanded such behavior from women. Strong and capable women are a pleasant surprise when we get them. I will always like Sanniang (SHYZM), Dongfang Bubai (Swordsman 2013), XLN (ROCH) among others. So, really, “mellow” princesses are ok for me in stories like that. 🙂
What I don’t understand is why this archetype persists in most modern dramas? There is so much you can do with a story once the agency of your female characters is not limited by patriarchal social norms. Times are changing and so is the understanding for the role of women in society, even in China. Tv shows should reflect that.

I like these 2 actors and their chemistry, but this is their 4th collaboration and I need a break from them. Plus palace dramas are so annoying.
