Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

As reported earlier last week, next on Hawick Lau‘s list to romance is Yang Rong, aka his wife’s best friend’s thief (Lol). But there is discrepancy in the news and Hawick may not be the lead as originally planned, which I’m okay with. I wanted a new face opposite Yang Rong, someone with a natural charming flair. Of the current new faces, Elvis Han (yes, our Monk Wu Xin) has that part down pat. It comes easily for him but he’s busy being the IT boy for Tangren productions (Sigh~). Anywho, Legend of the Flying Daggers is the fifth and final installment to Gu Long‘s Little Li Flying Dagger series. FYI, Zhu Yi Long’s Border Town Prodigal is the third installment. The drama’s weibo page has steadily churned out quick posters of its cast members and I’m very pleased with each reveal. YAY!

The novel follows Li Huai, Li Xunhuan’s grandson, as he wanders in jianghu to help the poor and uphold justice using his grandfather’s Little Li Dagger technique.

Playing the female lead, Xue Cai Yue, is Yang Rong. She’s a top female assassin and in the end has an ultimate battle with the male lead because his father killed her father. Will she have the heart to stab him? Another classic wuxia OTP trope.

Our adorable Gui Gui will portray Fang Ke Ke, a feisty, strong-willed pepper – second female lead who grew up with the male lead, Li Huai, and harbors a crush on him. Awww….

Huang Ming (Legend of Fragrance) as the male lead’s half brother, Li Zheng. Looks like he’s paired up with Gui Gui. And her love for Li Huai will drive him to the dark side.

Rounding out the supporting cast is Kenny Kwan (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) as Li Huai’s best friend.

There’s a drama adaptation of this series before in 2003 and it starred Julian Cheung and Ruby Lin as the star-crossed lovers. I don’t remember much from the series except that he’s a charming bastard (Julian’s natural state of mind, LOL) and slowly melts her icy exterior. Any of you guys remember it? It’s due for a rewatch if I find it online. Check out the OTP MV below!

yay for gui gui!! yay for yang rong!! but why hawickkkkkkkkkk!! please nooo hawick!! he’s too old for the old, no? the character is in his twenties and hawick, unlike yang rong, does not look young and he definitely doesn’t have that natural charm to play the role. T________T

I thought Gui Gui had been elevated to leading status now. 2nd lead again? The only think I liked from the Julien and Ruby version was that Fong Ke Ke got a happy ending, she was cute up to a point in the book. Hopefully she stays relatively harmless in this adaption and gets with his best friend asap.

AND NO TO HARWICK! Li Huai was a wanderer and a bit mischievous, he is also quiet young. The entire cast was suppose to be young.

Yang Rong is a good choice, I think fits the role, hopefully her real leading man will match with her more.

I wonder if William Chan is an option? I liked him from The Four and he’s got that mischievous streak thats similar to Li Huai.

Totally agree with William Chan. I liked him in Ancient Sword but I think he was even better in The Four because it seems he’s more natural as a mischievous funny guy. He’s young and with his physical fitness, would be great for the role 🙂

Unfortunately, she hasn’t been the lead in a big production yet…only from very small productions and I’m guessing its not enough to draw in the votes and investment.

Aww, really? Ke Ke has a good ending!? Now I need to rewatch Julian’s version. I think Gui Gui is gonna be another happy, comic relief character, to relieve all the tension from the main couple.

William Chan is a good choice but somehow I think they want an older actor for this. We can always hope!

Our hope has been in vain…Harwick has confirmed as Li Huai…

Well then…I guess this might be another drama a skim through.

I’m not a fan of the storyline.

The creepy lady from Julien’s version still gives me nightmares.

Gui Gui is an awesome actress and I always want to see more of her. Huang Ming is also an awesome actor so I’m OK with him too.

    However:

EWWW YUCK NO to Hawick WTF!!! OMG you Cdrama film studios, stop shitting all over legendary wuxia works FFS! The only reason Hawick would be cast is cuz of $$$ + connections.

Well screw this. I just won’t watch it.

Lol, Shimo. Always so passionate! 8D

I like almost everyone, hard to pass up!

Wuuuuut? Hawick Lau in wuxia? I thought the dude plays only snotty corporate types. He looks like he sleeps in those 5K suits. Oh well, we’ll see 🙂

I like Yang Rong and Gui Gui. Will check it out.

Yang Rong! It’s nice to know that she is playing the lead now. Her acting is top notch and she is a delight to watch. She shines in every role she plays and a badass assasin sounds extremely fitting for her. Can’t wait to see her onscreen!

I hope her smile isn’t your favorite feature because she’s not going to smile a lot and this is a sad ending. But since its a remake…hopefully they’ll throw the book out and just redo it so everyone gets a happy ending.

Wow, I just started Julian and Ruby’s series two days ago and now this news came out. Talk about timing, haha.

I have no doubts about Yang Rong’s acting. Always a joy to watch, whether she’s evil or good. Same goes for Gui Gui and Huang Ming.

Now, like the others I have doubts about Hawick. He doesn’t seem like he could pull off the 痞子 vibe, to be honest. He did try in that modern drama with his wife, but it came out completely childish. Please not again.

China, you have plenty of younger actors. Start using them!

You’re watching Flying Daggers or another series of them, Polaris? Should be interesting visiting something so old. Memories!

      • 26 thoughts on “Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

Yes, Flying Daggers. I fell in love with one of the songs from the series a while ago so I decided to give it a try. Before that song I had no idea they were in a series together. Such an interesting pair.

May I ask where did you find it? My own online searches were not really successful . Must work on my google fu … 🙁

        • 26 thoughts on “Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

Oh yay! We can spazz together! I’m only on episode 2 right now, right when the kids are grown up and Julian is causing havoc with the monks.

          Hurry and join us Nell!

          @Kap:
Hmm, this will be my first time watching “old” stuff. Looks a bit weird. 🙂 3 episodes in, I can say “poor Hawick”.
That Julian reaallly is a charming bastard. I can’t take my eyes off of him 😀 . Hawick is incapable of delivering something so captivating and infuriating at the same time.

        • 26 thoughts on “Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

First time!?! My, my, my! I’ve been rewatching old dramas all my life so I don’t feel the weirdness anymore, but instead, it feels more authentic. I love the fighting scenes back in the days, no fancy color patterns shooting out of their fingers/palms. Lol.

Right?!! Charming bastard is the way to go and Hawick will have a hard time winning me over.

That’s because you live in a place with easier access to these shows aaaand you understand chinese, Kappy :))) I have problems with both of these things. I only recently became good enough to understand stuff without subs. Aaand then, I have to pray to the internet gods not to mess up my connection because then – bye, bye dramas and charming bastards 😀
If it’s for tv, I like colorful shows and CGI. Come to think of it, I am the perfect target audience for Yumama dramas :D. Don’t know the source material, I like pretty faces, I likke shinny rays coming out of people’s hands and wire fu. 😉 It’s the movies I like gritty and realistic. I don’t know why exactly …

Hawick should stop with the botox :))) That might improve his performance considerably.

        • 26 thoughts on “Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

Oh, I don’t understand Chinese (at least not enough to watch without subtitle), my step dad’s family is Chinese and because we’ve been living together for so long, translation is almost automatic. I access all my shows online since the video rentals ran out of business, thanks to online streaming. Poor bosses!

Yes, you’re the right audience for Yumama’s colorful palette. =D I was raised watching physical fights with occasional beams coming out of palms so I’m right at home with dramas in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s.

        • 26 thoughts on “Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

The only Mainland actor that I can think of who can pull off the charming bastard vibe ala Julian above is Yuan Hong. (Yelu Xie, anyone?). Or Eddie Peng. I was considering Chen Xiao, but I’m still traumatized by his Yang Guo. Since they have cast Hawick Lau, well…

  7. 26 thoughts on “Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

Any idea when they plan to start production/filming? I believe Kenny is currently filming a modern drama as male first lead.

    • 26 thoughts on “Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

You mean Saying You Love Me? That series should wrap up soon and Daggers plan to enter production mid September or so. Kenny has been filming many projects simultaneously, supporting characters in most of them so I’m not surprised. Workaholic! 😉

      • 26 thoughts on “Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

Saying You Love Me–yes, that’s the one. It’s true he’s supporting character in most of the dramas he does, but hey, at least in Loving You, Countless Ties, as the second male lead, he gets the lead girl!

    • 26 thoughts on “Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

Thank you. 🙂 As much as I tried, couldn’t find a watchable version on the regular places (e.g. youtube) .

  8. 26 thoughts on “Gu Long’s Flying Daggers casts Hawick Lau, Yang Rong, Gui Gui

I like all the female casts, although to be frank the last time I saw Gui Gui is in The Four, and her character was annoyingly clingy there. (Not her fault!)

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hawick in ancient series before. He always looks pissed off to me 😀
