The Rise of A Tomboy confirms Zhao Li Ying, Zhang Han, and Jung Il Woo

Turns out Zhang Han pulled out of another movie to film this one with Zhao Li Ying. Mister, why you gotta go and ruin my hope for a new pairing? I’m in the minority here because many can’t get enough of this pairing since they were a cute couple in Shan Shan Comes To Eat (Boss & Me). I am neutral towards them, what can I say. They are only given a quick month to film this rom-com and the locations include Australia and Shanghai. How and when Jung Il Woo was invited – I do not know. I was just watching him on Running Man so it feels surreal he’s in here.

The Chinese title translates to The Perfect Lover of a Tomboy but the official title on the poster is The Rise of A Tomboy. I like the latter better because it focuses on her – the tomboy! Filming began on April 26th and Zhang Han has been filming his individual parts. He sent her a weibo message the other day telling her to hurry and come to the filming set, and she replied along the line of Here I come, get ready to receive me! I’m from the Zu Mountain! =)

Character description below, translated by moi:

Zhao Li Ying (The Legend of Flower, The Legend of Zu) plays a 24 years old bookworm, with a keen interest in math since young; at 9, she won a Gold Medal in Mathematics, at 18, she studied at a major university, at 22, she receives a scholarship to major in Mathematical Statistics in Melbourne (too many math terms, forgive my loose translation). Spending most of her time solving math problems, she has zilch social skills. Because of her confidence in mathematics, she believes that love and marriage can be calculated the same way, using equations and numbers to determine the highest percentage of meeting love at a certain time and location. As a matter of fact, the thesis for her Master degree is called The Formula of Love.

Zhang Han (The Four) plays a 26 years old musician, who likes photography and traveling. To him, love is the most beautiful thing and can’t be calculated using brains and numbers. Because he has never loved before, he is hesitant to move forward and appears indecisive. Sensitive and emotional, he’s easily moved by the smallest gestures. He carries a torch for a girl for the longest time and despite being treated like a toy – he comes when she calls, he leaves when she orders – he does not hold any resentment. His knowing the bookworm gives himself a fresh perspective on love, that rationality is sometimes necessary to help one escape emotional confusion/imprisonment. He learns that to love, one needs courage.

Jung Il Woo (A Watchman’s Journal) plays the second male lead – a 30 years old man who is looked upon as an idol in the world of finance, heir to a large corporation. However, he becomes a doctor. He’s described as talented and perfect – thinks rationally, always a step ahead of others, treasure results, and strive for perfection. Secretly, he yearns for a perfect love. When Li Ying’s character is confused, his position as an outsider helps her dissect every piece of detail, leading to an ideal choice.

Second female lead is played by Kimmy Tong Fei (Black Comedy, The Man From Macao II). Thanks to the song written by Zhang Han’s character, she steps into the showbiz world and becomes a famous singer. She’s described as sexy, gorgeous, and arrogant. She’s always on the receiving end and never understands the notion of giving back. She loves Jung Il Woo’s character but he only uses her and never considers her as important as she thinks.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a drama version but this movie-drama trend isn’t my favorite. Lol.

I agree, I will love a drama but movie drama is not the same. No surprise with this pairing again, but I thought it would be for another drama instead.

The synopsis sounds interesting, it’s not your typical love story. If the directing is done well, and of course with the good acting, this movie can be a box office hit.

I’m happy that she’s smart cookie…let’s hope her brain cells do not go to lalaland after meeting the male lead. 😛

Yeaa I don’t like either… You’re my sunshine i pass it ..the drama just so so and I think the movie too..boss and me become movie is not good step coz I think it is to short also people will feel disspointed if the male and female lead not adorable (they will compare with ZLY and ZH).. But I will support if the rise of tomboy become drama with note: same actress and actor to potray…btw actually I have an opinion why don’t JIW become the man lead? i mean his face more look like playboy with a naughty image than ZH..ZH have a serious face and rationally..what do you think Kappy?

Ha, I wouldn’t mind if JIL was the lead. He has the boyish look down pat. I didn’t know Zhang Han is older! Jung Il Woo is the same age as Li Ying. =)

I just watched Jung Il Woo in the chinese show of Star Chef. he was eliminated last week so maybe he just head over since its in Shanghai too. I don’t know how I feel about this paring, I liked them as Big boss and Shang Shang. I guess I’ll just have to wait for the movie to decided if they can pull it off again.

I’m very excited to watch this movie — sounds straight out of Rom Com land. All of ZLY’s movies so far have been cast ensembles (except for Gong, which doesn’t really count in my book because of Yu Zheng and also since she was the villain) — I think this is the first time she’s anchoring a film, so good luck to her!

I don’t mind the Shan Shan / Feng Teng pairing again, I think it’s a nice “vacation” job for her since she’s familiar with Zhang Han already and it’s filming portions in Australia. I think you mentioned this before, but I think she’s really smart with her job planning — film tedious drama (i.e., Zu Mountain) , then take “vacation” by filming a shorter modern film or drama, ideally involving some nice shooting locations. I think Shan Shan was one of her “vacations” actually. 🙂

Haha vacation jobs. Sounds like a deal. A heavy role then a light role, then back to a heavy role. GOOD PLANNING LI YING! ^_^

Is it wrong that I want Jung IL Woo to be the lead?? That face! Looks so much younger than Zhang Han. I Think I have enough of Zhang han this year. Hes every where ans his drama gets release one after another. Then he and suzy in another drama as you guys said here a few weeks earlier.
