Remake of TVB’s A Step Into The Past courts William Chan

Looks like the next IT boy receiving casting love calls left and right is William Chan (Legend of the Ancient Sword, The Legend of Zu). I’m not sure I like this… The original did bring fame and attention to the rising group of newbies led by Louis Koo and the talented Kwong Wah. When I was younger, I liked A Step Into The Past a lot… Time travel was a novel idea back in the days and who knew TVB was the pioneer of many things ages ago (heh). A Step Into The Past is an ancient drama produced by TVB in 2001; the story is based on a novel of the same name by Huang Yi and follows a police officer (Louis) as he travels back in time to the warring periods of China and gets involved in many historical events leading to the unification of China under the Qin dynasty. Raymond Lam played the first emperor of Unified China, aided by Louis along the way.

Look at the old cast below. TVB can’t pull of a wuxia or ancient drama of the same caliber anymore. It’s a good thing China is remaking this so the chances of new blood is high!

I really like the theme sang by Louis Koo.

I hope my girl crushes stay far away from this production cause the male lead is a player! He’s nice but can’t keep his heart to one lady… All the girls in the drama love him. If I could change one thing, it’s the ending! SPOILERS: How infuriating for the two ladies to share one man… I know it’s the ancient times but he’s a modern man! TSKKK.

Despite my complaint, I did like the comedic scenes… Maybe I will do a quick rewatch!

I doubt it, Li Yi Feng is in casting call for another big drama. Lol. But yes, China loves that combination!

The drama version of 诛仙 just got OKed by SARFT to start production and most likely LYF is playing the lead. Apparently he was supposed to be the lead in that drama but for various reasons it never started filming, so the production company gave him the lead role in Ancient Sword instead…

I’ve been wanting to see the drama version of 诛仙 (they changed the drama title to pass SARFT but it’s still based on the same book) ever since I heard about it and it’ll be awesome if LYF is playing the lead cuz then I’d get to see him play a villainy role (just like mom predicted LOL) … unless they change the story when they adapt it…

LOL not just China, I love the William/LYF combo too! Their epic bromance is everything 🙂

Unless TVB hires an amazing writer or rehire the ones that they lost, I don’t see how this can ever live up to the original. And you’re right that they can no longer do wuxia series anymore. I was rewatching one from 1993 and despite the terrible computer effects, everything else was great. Yeah, not going to happen anymore.

Plus William is doing so well in the Mainland market right now. Going to TVB is like stepping down instead of going up.

I remember loving this drama. It was so unique at the time and all the girls were so pretty and sacrificed a lot for the male lead… It’s gonna be a treat for the male fans!

I’ll just be blunt : NO!

We don’t need to re-make every little thing these days. We don’t need X series for this generation, watch the original and enjoy it for all its glory don’t muck it up with a re-make/re-telling/etc.

I wouldn’t mind a remake. I actually never finished watching the original. I should probably get on that…haha. The only thing I remember is Louis calling his bun a cha siu bao when they finished his makeover. This story would actually be very interesting since few dramas take place during this time period.

William is such a cutie…I would watch him in anything. : )

I remember that line to this day. Mom would say, want some Cha Siu Bao? *points to her perfect bun*

This is one of my all times favorite TVB drama. I remember watching this drama over and over again when I was a kid. I don’t think they can ever live up to the original, but I would like to see a remake. And if William is cast, that would be great. I think he looks somewhat like Louis. The dark skin and dimples that is lol.

    Kaptain —

I think you’d probably get your wish on the alternate ending. I think the original ending might not make it past the censors. Haven’t you noticed that almost all the idol dramas these days have the main guy proclaiming he has eyes for his one true love and her only? And all the women are like — I may be poor/uneducated/childish/pick-whatever-trope-they’re-using, but I have this one secret wish/dream/ideal that I’ll find a man who loves me entirely. Like Xi Dian Yuan Yang — or Perfect Couple — or Prime Minister — etc, etc. Even when the time period and what not make such proclamations extremely unrealistic?

I haven’t noticed mainly because that is Kdrama formula since the days chicken lay eggs. One true love ever since they are kids. Cross that, ever since they are babies! They must not move one, they cannot love anyone else, they are stuck together forever and ever.

Even when the time period and what not make such proclamations extremely unrealistic?

That is the romance and addiction of it all. We love our dedicated men. =)

What do you think?
