Now I need to rewatch the old versions as I don’t quite remember the storyline anymore. Produced by Yu Zheng and based on the wuxia novel written by Jin Yong called The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, this new adaptation recently releases a stunning trailer to build up anticipation for its 2013 premiere.
Joe Chen Qiao En is a stunner in this series (when she’s dressed as a woman), and is probably going to overshadow the other ladies surrounding Wallace Huo‘s Ling Hu Chong.
Plot: The story follows Ling Hu Chong (Wallace Huo), the eldest disciple of Mount Hua Sect, as he ventures and gets tangled in the intrigues of wulin after he’s kicked out of the sect. Along the way, he meets friends, foes, and lots of women.
The innocent days of shooting birds and catching butterflies of Ling Hu Chong and his first love, Yue Ling Shan (Yang Rong).
They even have their own cave with a swing, surrounded by candles. PRETTY!

But those days are short-lived because of new disciple, Lin Ping Zhi (Chen Xiao). Sole survivor of his family, the leader of Mount Hua Sect sympathizes him and accepts him as a student. Because of his appearance, Ling Hu Chong loses his first love, Yue Ling Shan.
Heartbroken Hu Chong after peeping at Ling Shan snuggling with new boy Ping Zhi. UNDER THE SNOW, no less.
Yes, he’s glaring. Love is a fleeting emotion, so he dives into polishing his martial arts.
But destiny assigns him as a flower, forever being haunted by bees. He meets Ren Ying Ying (Yuan Shan Shan), daughter of Ren Woxing, former leader of Sun Moon Holy Cult before Dongfang Bubai’s scheme ousted him. She falls in love with Ling Hu Chong, as expected. He’s also fond of her.

Joe Chen plays Dongfang Bubai, leader of the Sun Moon Holy Cult, who aspires of becoming an invincible martial artist. He obtains the Sunflower Manual and castrates himself to master the skills. Not sure whether Yu Zheng is going to make Joe a male/female first before the change.

No, Dongfang BuBai is not romantically involved with Ling Hu Chong. The first time they met was the time when he came to kill Dongfang BuBai. I’m pretty sure in this version Wallace Huo is playing two characters, one being the lead and the latter being Dongfang BuBai’s lover, whom controls the Sun and Moon Sect.

lol kap did mention about wallace’s duo characters in her parrot post. the other one is a general or something named Yang Lian Ting. in this version, DFBB likes ling hu chong…but i think he doesn’t return the affection so she turns toward general yang because he resembles LHC. he’s like her boytoy…. 😀

Surprise, surprise. I didn’t know there was this version before. As Kaptain pointed out, Singaporean drama is not very popular and it’s hard to find on the web, if I could even understand what they said in the first place. Nevertheless, I’m still curious about how they portrayed different characters. Based on what I read on Wikipedia, it seemed there were major plot changes as well. But I can’t say that the theme song sang by Fann Wong wasn’t addictive! Thanks Kap!

AH! I remember this. Not many are familiar because it’s a Singaporean drama. My family watched it and all I remember is the awesome themesong by Fann Wong. It just pumps your blood.

Based on Jing Yong’s original version, Dongfang Bubai was interested in Lin Hu Chong but they were never romantically involved. She/He likes to tease/make life difficult for Hu Chong and watch Hu Chong squirm. I think the Dongfang Bubai has sado-masochist tendencies. LOL This particular novel of Jing Yong was not too famous and was not the best of his writings because the storyline involves a lot of politics between the sects. Hu Chong was the only genuinely good/virtuos person. Even his teacher is an ambitious villian wearing a sheep’s mask. The reason Hu Chong was kicked out of the school was because he was close to finding out evidence of his teacher’s teachery. The bloke that married his “se mei” (same school younger sister/daughter of his teacher/his first love) was originally good but was forced into evil and castrated himself to learn “Pik Shue Jien”. He later kills his wife and the entire sect and Hu Chong became an avenging angel wanting to extract revenge against him. If you are watching for the romance, you will be very disappointed. All the women Hu Chong loves and who loves him will all eventually die. He ends up with no one, becoming a wanderer in the end. In an interview after writing this novel, Jing Yong said that the story of Hu Chong is about the unfairness of the world and how a good person can be pushed to do evil deeds due to circumstances. However, Hu Chong survived because he refused to conform to his circumstances and remained virtuos to the end, albeit sacrifices along the way. The story also seeks to challenge the reader’s preception of what is good and what is evil. Does being in a good sect means you are good? Can ppl from the evil sect be good as well? I think this drama will probably change some of the storyline to garner ratings. Perhaps, in the drama, Hu Chong does end up with a lady he loves and Dongfang Bubai has romantic interest in Hu Chong??? Who knows, eh? I am not watching this for the story. I am watching this for Wallace. For the best wuxia storyline and romance, nothing beats “Tien Long Ba Bu” and the Condor Heroes trilogy, hence their popularity.

Gah! So the scholar-looking dude, Lin Ping Zhi, also castrates himself after being married to Ling San. The trailer definitely spoils A LOT of things for new fans without a clue as we see the ladies around Hu Chong falling left and right. Even DFBB is stabbed! And she doesn’t look too pleased.
I’m watching this for the eye candies…Apparently, Yu Zheng has a gift in picking handsome men (below)…Wallace Huo is not my type, so he’s all yours! 😛

Ok, so i’m reading this post and i see Wallace Huo and Joe Cheng and i’m getting excited *claps in excitement* Then Joe Chen is a dude – WTH???!!!! I was looking forward to seeing them as a couple, that just killed it. As i’m reading the posts, it just depresses me as i realize there’s no chance whatsoever that they’ll be together 🙁 i guess i’m skipping this one

I can’t wait to see this one. I actually loved TVB’s version with Fiona Leung and Jacky Lui (though it was called State of Divinity) and have seen various versions, including the Singaporean version. This remake, as with many China productions, is visually stunning. Joe Chen is gorgeous, but I really hope they don’t play her with LHC. However, it wouldn’t be the first time. There was Jet Li’s version with Brigette Lin (Joey Wong played DFBB’s subordinate/lover). DFBB featured very little in TVB’s 1996 version, so I’m wondering if Wallace’s version is closer to Jet Li’s version than other versions.

I can NOT believe that DFBB is being played by Joe Chen. I thought DFBB was always supposed to be like, asexual or something? I only remember thinking he’s like a cross between guy and girl, and Joe is like, TOTALLY GIRL. Like seriously. Even when she’s dressing up as a guy. And they’re drawing a love line between LHC and DFBB? Pure fuckery, pardon my language. If that really happens, then I’m afraid Yu Zheng is simply butchering Jin Yong’s original story.
On the other hand, Wallace looks exceptionally good as Ling Hu Chong – wasn’t too keen on his casting at first, but now he looks fantastic, and I think he actually does fit the Ling Hu Chong character. I’ll be keeping an eye out for this show cos of Wallace, that’s for sure.
