[Recap] Feast of the Gods Episode 4

Photobucket

This girl loves deep and for a long time. It worries me though cause she’s already liking Jae Ha, causing jealous sparks to be seen coming out of In Joo’s eyes. I honestly don’t want the jealousy to come yet, especially if we’re going to head into that typical second female lead story line. Can’t the girls be friends before all this identity madness come?

Rocking on the boat with her new friend, Jae Ha, Joon Young answers to Grandpa’s call. He tells her about the return of her Adopted dad. Her eyes grow wide.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Adopted Dad is heading towards the ship when Joon Young stops him and screams, “Appa! Appa!” without a care. He’s in a hurry to meet his new wife and doesn’t have time to chat but Joon Young insists that she come along, least she could do is greet her formally. Dad refuses, breaking Joon Young’s heart by saying she’s not even his biological daughter to begin with.

Photobucket
She backs down but still wants to eat a meal with dad. He unclaws her hands and dashes to the ship, leaving behind Joon Young in angry tears. Watching this whole scene from afar is Jae Ha.

Photobucket
Just then, Joon Young receives another call – a close ajumma reveals that her adopted father seems to be short on money because he’s sold his dead wife’s belongings for a cheap price. Joon Young plops on the ground in utter sadness. She has waited ten years for another betrayal.

Jae ha is not sure of how to react, so he follows behind her, on a separate path, watching.

Photobucket
She walks mindlessly into a meadow with tall grasses and reminisces the memories with dad. In her head, a faint voice asks, “Did you forget about me? Even If I want to erase you, I keep seeing your face…”

Confirming her safety, Jae Ha leaves, giving her space and time to calm down matters of the heart.

Baek Sul calls In Joo, to remind the young girl of how to act at the press conference but In Joo isn’t in the mood to talk and hangs up surly. Three feet away, Doo Hee witnesses the exchange. She doesn’t like being kept in the dark, especially about the collaboration with Baek Sul in the upcoming ceremony (to introduce the sauce again, I suppose). Doo Hee decides to send In Joo to the states, where her older brother is living while she deals with the mess.

Photobucket
But In Joo opens up – she doesn’t want to see mom losing sleep again because of the book. She assures mother that she won’t be used by Baek Sul. This collaboration is her demonstration to the world that she’s the rightful owner of the book Heavenly Methods. More importantly, it’s the beginning of her battle to be recognized officially not as Doo Hee’s daughter but as a talented chef of Arirang. Doo Jee replies honestly, “The reason why you’re not accepted by the people is because you lack the skills.” OOO OUCHHH!

In Joo stammers at the truth, and says she’s doing all this is to fulfill Mom’s dream, for her to become the next executive chef of Arirang. Doo Hee apologizes for putting a big burden on her shoulder. In Joo shakes her head, taking the blame on herself.

It’s dinner time and Grandpa cutely whines about Joon Young’s disappearance. Jae Ha is returning to Seoul tomorrow and Grandpa casually tells him that his grandma needs to come in person to get the book. You big old softie.

Photobucket
Jae Ha heads to the same meadow and sees Joon Young, still standing there, rigid and cold. He quickly gives her a piggyback ride home. Along the way, she recalls the days when she has stood in that very same spot for hours but no one came looking for her. She smiles that he came today. He lightens up the mood, complimenting the fresh air. She agrees and mumbles that everything is tasty here. Everything.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Next morning, Joon Young wakes up and notices a rolled up towel on her head and remembers that it was Jae Ha who brought her home. She comes outside looking for him but grandpa discloses the news – he has left. She’s clearly disappointed but a phone call from Jae Ha re-invigorates her smile again. He asks about her health and Joon Young is beyond the happy clouds, speechless. He reminds her to contact this number if she ever comes to Seoul.

Inside her room, Joon Young claps her hands around her burning face, obviously crushing on the gentleman. And promptly remembers that Grandpa does have the book called Heavenly Method of Cooking.

At Arirang, In Joo announces to everyone that they have to work hard today with the chefs from Sanarae. Today, they’re a team.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Which is when Daniel, a chef at Arirang, criticizes the main chef of Sanarae for grilling the ribs/steaks differently. In Joo approaches the men and calls the food he made trash, and moves to dump the whole tray into the trash bin. The old chef is furious at her audacity and lack of respect for the elders but she doesn’t care. Their voices escalate and Jae Ha happens to stop by and listens on. The main chef leaves the kitchen in a huff with his followers.

Photobucket
Jae Ha waits for In Joo outside and comments about her air of superiority in the kitchen, he’s glad he’s not a chef in her kitchen. We also learn that they’re an item. Woooo~~

Photobucket
They continue to exchange couple talk until Do Yoon’s appearance makes her nervous and she turns around, hiding her face. Do Yoon asks Jae Ha for a person named Ha In Joo and Jae Ha decisively points her out. She pretends not to recognize Do Yoon and he follows the game. Do Yoon is a hired help for the ceremony since the kitchen is short staffed.

Photobucket
She waits for him inside and verifies that he doesn’t…remember her? He feigns innocence and she is quick to dispose his job. Do Yoon is left with no choice and mumbles our her name, “Song Yeon Woo, can I meet this woman? She still has my coat.” In Joo stops in her tracks, turns and glares at him. Yea, he caught you little Miss Shadow Girl.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Joon Young arrives at the ceremony, holding the Heavenly Method close to her. She’s here to meet Jae Ha of course. Nervous, she practices her greeting in front of a tinted window – where Do Yoon is taking this beauty nap inside. He rolls down the window and she gets flustered, but before she can get out of the way, he opens the door which shoves her straight to the ground.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
He gets out, looks at her, and keeps walking. Joon Young runs after him, demanding for an apology. He muses, why? You didn’t get injured, however, my window gets worn down. She stares at him in disbelief. In a distance, Jae Ha waves at her and she immediately smiles. Do Yoon looks annoyed but continues his way.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
In the kitchen, one particular female chef goes goo-goo ga-ga over Do Yoon’s looks and body. She plays coy and asks him to lift the heavy broth pot. All the while, she laments about her weak hands. Hilariously, he glances up-and-down her well-rounded body and agrees with her self-assessment of having a “swollen” figure.

Photobucket
In Joo sees this scene but says nothing. He walks past her without any acknowledgement. And she recalls the night they met at the club, and in the moment of careless wandering, cuts her fingers while slicing the ribs.

Jae Ha and Joon Young sit down for tea. She shows him the book but he refuses to use it, stating that it’s the same as stealing. He gets a call from the kitchen and rushes there.

Photobucket
Injured, In Joo can’t personally cut the ribs anymore so they need to find another chef. Jae Ha calls in the help of Joon Young, and she complies happily. Everyone gathers around, amazed at her newbie’s skill.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Back at Udo Island, Grandma arrives to speak with old friend Grandpa. It turns out that his wife was her rival at Arirang when they were young. His wife stole the second book and ran away with it. Grandma sheds tears upon hearing about the demise of her friend (died from stomach cancer) and Grandpa confesses he can’t give her the book. Someone else is the rightful owner of it.

Joon Young completes her batch of ribs and looks around the kitchen, impressed by the grandness of it all until the loud voices pull her attention away.

Photobucket
The well-rounded chef from Arirang is arguing with another chef from Saranae. While they sputter nonsense at each other, Joon Young cuts and prepares the fish. After she’s done, the crowd again is stunned by her crafty hands. She continues to help around the kitchen until Baek Sul arrives, fuming about the mishap.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Since this is a food show, they need a chef to perform the making. In Joo assures that she can handle it but Baek Sul wants Joon Young to come along, just in case.

Photobucket
In his van, we see Do Yoon playing with….robot figures. OMG. This is supposed to cute, no? Why do I feel sadness for this man? A lonely boy who was trapped with the dead body of his elder brother for god knows how long. Growing up with that memory, he appears to be stuck in that mentality and comforts himself with the colorful blocks and van…the colors that he can’t see in his life.

Photobucket
Moments later, In Joo interrupts his playtime and blames him for today’s unfortunate event. She gives money – paying for the coat he lent to her earlier. Not having interest in her, he returns some bills and advises her to stay away from him, only then will his lips be sealed about Song Yeon Woo.

Jae Ha assures Joon Young that she would do fine and they exchange playful punches and skin ship, which is noticed by In Joo.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
And the ceremony begins. Baek Sul gives a teary speech about her trainee days at Arirang and hopes that this event will bring peace as well as improve Korean foods. She is joined by Doo Hee at the table. Grandma also joins them, after her meeting with Grandpa.

Photobucket
In Joo begins her showcase, only to find she doesn’t have the strength (in her fingers?) to carry on. She tries again, and this time the knife slips out of her grip and falls to the ground. Doo Hee is disappointed, she gets up to leave. Yea, that move completely breaks In Joo because she loses the confidence to continue and stares soullessly at the concerned faces in the audience. Did anyone notice they use the same knife that has touched the ground? Urg.

This is when Baek Sul intervenes and explains In Joo’s injury to the crowd. Why does it feel like she’s a better person in this scene? She announces that Joon Young will be replacing In Joo for the demonstration.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Joon Young is a nervous ball herself and hesitates, until Jae Ha encourages her with a “Hwaiting” signal that she begins. Everyone looks on in awe. Notice how the camera focuses on Joon Young’ face more than the food? 😛

Photobucket
This is when we hear the end of Grandma’s conversation with Grandpa: The rightful owner of the book is Joon Young because she was the one who stayed by his dying wife side and gave her the strength to live on for three years.

Alice: I LOVEEEE JAE HA in this episode!! I love a man who knows when to give a girl space, instead of busting in like he’s in control of everything. This is a sign of respect and confidence in her ability as a person to handle situations like a professional. Very rare to see a male lead like this. Although I think it’s a tad too early for crushes, I can see why Joon Young likes Jae Ha.

What am I going to do with my super SOFT SPOT for Do Yoon now? Ughhhh

One thing that I notice in this episode is the repetitive coincidences of Joon Young showing off ability. This is also one of the things I raged in Baby-Faced Beauty. Remember the endless competitions the writers threw in for the sake of affirming Soo Young as the better fashion designer? Oh My Gosh. Give the other girl some credentials man! Stop shoving natural talent down my throat!

Doo Hee failed as a mother in this episode, again. Before I go on, where’s the father, Young Bum? It is In Joo’s most vulnerable moment, and she leaves the scene as a mother? No solace? No encouragement? They gave you a second chance at mothering a daughter and yet you failed miserably the second time around. I wonder how long she’s going to live in her alternate world, the world where In Joo is still alive and standing beside her.

    Hi dear,

Can I link your Feast of the Gods recaps to Soompi? Will I get you into trouble as your website provides links to video download? I do not want to cause your website to shut down…

Feel free to Hanayori (although I have to say beforehand that the recaps are not as insightful/thought-provoking as others – just a simple read).

I’m a member there too and usually refer fans here for those looking for direct dl links. 🙂

I love all the actors in this drama and bawled through eps. 1, 2 and the beginning of ep 3. I’m so glad the adult
cast is now in place and feel that anyone who patiently waits while the foundation is laid in these episodes will find a jewel and their next crack drama. I’m up to ep 8 and still no sign of the father since ep. 3? What’s up with
that? He went to Udo and never came back. Oh well!

The kids are excellent – especially that little girl Yeon Woo. She’s amazing at the puppy-sad-please-adopt-me look.

I can’t watch the new episodes yet cause it’s exam/research period. Saving them all to marathon next week! Spring break!

Makjang dramas if done right and executed well can be extremely gripping and highly entertaining. And FEAST OF THE GODS is the current example of it. There’s nothing ground-breaking but the flow of the plot makes me want for more although everything seems predictable. ^^

Thank you for the wonderful recaps about this cooking series. Can I use your screenshots for my appreciation post about this drama in my blog? Please . . . Don’t worry, I’ll surely give credits.
