Finally! I have been waiting with bated breath since the countdown began. heh! The best part is it’s English Subbed by the production company so international fans can understand. Great marketing strategy! Let’s get the other crews to do the same thing, yes yes? Sparrow (麻雀) is a republican drama based on the novel written by Hai Fei. The trailer is released on May 4th to celebrate Li Yi Feng‘s birthday. His youthful face turns 29 this year.
Compiled Stills:
Li Yi Feng. An undercover agent with a mission to infiltrate the headquarters under Edward Zhang’s to obtain intel about a secret plan that could destroy China during the 1940s. During his journey he meets both friends and foes, building trust and witnessing betrayals from those closest to him.
Zhou Dong Yu. Supposedly betrothed to Zhang Ruo Yan’s character, she, of course, falls for the male lead. Lol.
OTP.
Edward Zhang Lu Yi. Big brother gone bad.
Zhang Ruo Yun. He’s an agent who is against Li Yi Feng after he begins his secret spy mission.
Love Triangle.
Andrew Yin Zheng (Love Me If You Dare). Ruthless officer carrying out brutal acts but deep down he desires a warm love.
Adi Kan (Crazy New Year’s Eve). A female agent, opposite of Zhou Dong Yu in terms of personality. She also carries a torch for the male lead. Her cover identity is a third-rate movie actress. Looks like she will eventually change her mind and like Yin Zheng’s character?
Li Yi Feng’s boss, played by your sister Jie Jie, Li Xiao Ran (The Nightingale).
This shot comes straight out of horror movie. Lol.
5-Minute Trailer:
With the author Han Lei in charge of the drama script, Sparrow is directed by Chen Jin (Zombies Reborn) and Zhou Yuan Zhou (Legend of Fragrance). To premiere late June. Head over to the mega list for reference. Hilarious how the OTP in Chusen has their dramas going head to head in the ratings game. Li Yi Feng’s Sparrow vs Zhao Li Ying’s Rouge. Spicy. Then we have THEIR drama (Chusen) a few weeks after. Lol.

Ugh, I feel like this is way too “idol” for my liking. I absolutely love republican dramas but it’s because of the smart political emphasis and serious tone. Now they’re just turning any genre into a huge idol fest.

With such a youthful cast, its hard to ignore that and their inexperience. It will probably be like an idol series with some heavier stuff in between.

I’m getting the same feeling too! Seems very “idol” like but I think they’re trying to be serious…hopefully the plot and acting are alright.

Oh oh oh, Zhang Ruoyun! No stranger to Republican period dramas–nearly half of his previous drama projects (~7) took place in that time period.

Hmmm rather liking this. But I’m confused. I guess that’s the point though. @Jess. Lol. Usually I’m all against the idol transformations (esp with period dramas in ancient setting) but honestly, I absolutely hate traditional republican dramas; even Disguiser was slightly more focused on family and relationships (not necessarily romantic) that just politics. So I’m actually liking the idol-change to some degree.
Liyifeng confuses me. I know he’s a spy working for the communists. But he turns on all his friends, family, and partner. So does that make him the bad guy or are we still rooting for the commies here and he’s the good guy and everyone else are the evil occupants… Cuz in the trailer, looks like he betrays ZDY, kills(?)/hurts Zhang Ruo Yun (despite the earlier scene of “thanks brother” with him), torture a whole bunch of people I can’t see clearly, etc.
On the otherhand, plot wise, so far this is looking better that Rouge for me. I’d still watch Rouge for the awesome OTP and great lead actor/actresses (I mean Lu Yi and ZLY?! great stuff) but honestly I’m holding higher hopes for this one at the moment.
Also, did I see Duke Yan’s face (from NiF, wait is he Duke or Marquis? Anyways Yan “Hou”)? I did! Hmmm. He looks like a baddie this time though.

The production company behind Journey of Flower is the same one behind Rouge I believe soo I am highly anticipating Rouge!! I think the quality will be amazing and ZLY will look great in it!!

Nothing should be associated with that awful Qian Gu show. Lol. Bad characterization and Li Ying didnt even look that pretty. At least from Rouge stills so far, she looks cute. Production company has many staff rotating too, so cant based quality yet.

Don’t like Zhou DongYu… might check this out for LYF. It’s been a while since I last saw him on the screen.
