A co-production between Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, Shu Qi leads the gorgeous cast at Cannes Film Festival this year where the movie director, Hou Hsiao Hsien, picked up an award for Best Director. The story isn’t something new or creative but the music and the mood in the trailer got me! It follows a kidnapped child (Shu Qi) as she’s trained to become an assassin. Years later, she returns to her birth land and is ordered to kill a man (Chang Chen) she was once betrothed to. What will it be?
Stills:
This poster looks badass!

She looks beautiful.
And if that’s not enough eye-candy, here is Shu Qi stealing the contrast for BAZAAR this month. Cannot take my eyes off this woman!

The trailer looks fantastic indeed. Do you know if the movie is dubbed or using actors’ real voice? (I know there’s a Japanese actor in it, but IIRC in Red Cliff Shido Nakamura speaks his lines in Mandarin (then there are comments about his awful accent).

Good question! That I’m not sure. It’s hard to tell in the trailers with the loud background music. I hope so, though. *crosses fingers*

Ironic that China hires many Japanese (and Korean) actors for Chinese roles, but a big stink was made when Chinese actresses were given roles in Memoirs of a Geisha.

It is somewhat ironic but many things have changed since 2005. I think they are less opposed to the idea now.

I think a big deal was made with Memoirs of a Geisha was because it was suppose to a japanese historical drama based on a popular book, but they did not even cast one japanese person as the female main cast . It’s kinda like red cliff having an all japanese main cast. It kinda loses it’s authenticity.

Such a pretty cast. *__*
I’ve been waiting for the release of this movie. It’s a new genre for the director but I hope it retains his usual style of extreme long takes.
