You know as much as I adore Zhao Li Ying, I will never say she’s an excellent singer. Lol. In live performances, she sounds very robotic. So I was quite worried when they asked her to sing the opening themesong with Wallace Huo. The verdict? She sounds quite good in the recording session! Whew! Their voices blend really well and we all know Wallace is a good singer through his duet with Della Ding last year.
Once the ending song comes out, I’ll add it to this post. 🙂
UPDATE 5/30/15: OTP song is actually the ending song. Since the drama is long, there will be two opening themesongs. They will rotate at episode 25. Opening themesong is revealed today. Check out more game promotions after the jump!

- Did I hear it right? It has English lyrics! They did say there will be English version of the songs.
- I like this song, but still not epic enough to be an opening theme.
Ending Themesong: Can’t Say – Wallace Huo & Zhao Li Ying
- I like the song, surprisingly. It could sound more epic and tragic for their story. The fanmade mv still slays. =p
- Since Wallace and Li Ying sing the song, I guess it makes sense to feature mostly their scenes but I really want to see more of the other males/characters too.

Mmm this song’s OK I guess. I think it’d work better as an ending rather than opening song. It’s too soft for an opening song.
Yeah I wanna see the other guys more too. We only got like 1 second of Sha Qianmo and maybe 3-5 seconds of Dongfang. *sigh*
LOL there’s a bit where ZLY’s holding this pink and purple petal-like thing and it’s the same prop used in Ancient Sword HAHAHAHAHA. Actually I’m wondering if they filmed it in similar places cuz there are quite a few sets and scenery that look a hell of a lot like those in Ancient Sword!

And is it just me or is there still zero chemistry between Wallace and ZLY? Where is the spark???
It’s weird cuz ZLY has good chemistry with her other costars like Chen Xiao, Zhang Han, or even William Chan! Same deal with Wallace – his chemistry with his previous co-stars (like Tang Yan) is also quite good, so why do ZLY and Wallace seem so stiff with each other?

The lack of chemistry – I don’t know….. this is one serious dilemma. What’s missing!!!?? WHY??! Is it the story and the way the characters are presented? The optimist in me says they might have more chemistry in a different type of genre.

Hrrmmmm~ some parts of the song sound really nice, but I think ZLY needs to work on her absolute pitch since her pitch jumps tend to sound off key. I really liked Wallace’s singing though. Q – Q
Chemistry is looking a little forced. I think it might be partly because Wallace is trying too hard to be in his aloof & wise character that he’s can’t act naturally when he needs to act more emotional. : / mrahhhhhh
And it looks like a bloody sad ending scene [AGAIN] nooooooooooooooooooooooo~~~

For once, I’m okay with a sad ending because Master does not deserve a happy ending for all the pain he causes! I’m evil. 8D But when all the good men around Hua Qian Gu die… that’s sad.

Hahaha~ good point, I guess I was more exasperated at the continued cdrama trend of everyone dying in the end ~_~ but very true, he doesn’t deserve a happy ending compared to other characters that got killed off xD

Yeah I don’t like the trend of tragic endings in Cdrama either. It depends on which version of the novel ending they’re adapting though, or maybe they make a new ending altogether for the drama (see my comment below)…

It depends on which version of the novel they are adapting or if they’ve even changed the ending altogether. The first edition of the book had an open ending where after 30 years of pain and insanity, Master finds the reincarnated Hua Qiangu and takes her to be his apprentice again. She’s a child this time but mentally impaired. And then it stops here.
The second edition of the novel goes further saying that Master eventually raised her and after she grew up (much mentally slower than her past self), Master was content to just live with her like this, but he always misses the past life version of HQG. Dongfang shows up after all these years and came up with a way for HQG to regain ALL of her past life memories and be not mentally impaired, and HQG takes it up, but ends up being physically impaired in exchange (blind, deaf, and mute). After many years of Sha Qianmo, Dongfang, and Master trying to find a cure, she eventually gets cured and she and Master married.
The 3rd edition of the novel (the newest one) has Master being in pain and insane for 200 years, and then finally finding the reincarnated version of HQG (who is mentally impaired), etc. So basically it’s the same as the 1st edition but with the angst and insanity lasting 200 instead of 30 years.

Hehehehe I expected that you’d like the 3rd edition, since you don’t seem to like Master all that much (judging from our discussions). Well, I understand completely cuz my favorite character is Sha Qianmo and then Dongfang … out of the 3 main leads I actually like Master the least – the filmmakers were smart in casting Wallace Huo cuz he’s got legions of fans and so good to watch onscreen (he’s gorgeous, c’mon).
The whole thing with “raising and then marrying HQG” seem like robbing the cradle to me, but oh well, for the purpose of the story I understand why the author made Master and HQG the main couple – it’s way more dramatic than if HQG ended up with either Dongfang or Sha Qianmo. And Sha Qianmo felt more like a “big brother” than romantic partner of HQG. 🙂

It’s a shame Wallace and Zhao Liying seem to have no screen chemistry, because HQG and Master’s EPIC ANGSTY EARTH-SHATTERING ALL TIME GREAT LOVE is supposed to be the main draw point of the story. It’s the heart of the story and everything sort of evolves around it…

Mmm this opening song has a passable melody but EPIC FAILS as an opening theme for an ANCIENT CHINESE FANTASY WUXIA. WTF is this POP song with ENGLISH lyrics doing as an opening theme??? And those English lyrics are cheesy and downright cringe-worthy. *PUKE*
The whole deal with making an English theme song for HQG is just FAIL full-stop. Like, it totally breaks the mood and atmosphere of the story – imagine the mood-killer of having say, the theme song of Lord of the Rings being a JPop song. (And before anyone chucks a fit, I’ve been listening to JPop since I was a kid but there’s a time and place for everything)
I hope they have a better song for the 2nd opening theme. So far the songs they’ve released are terribly disappointing. Wallace and ZLY’s duet is again, passable, but so damn soft and flat they can sing you straight to sleep.

After listening to the themesong X times, my selective hearing has ignored the English lyrics… Lol. Yep. I’m brainwashed and ready to see this drama unfolds in all angles of hilarity!! Mostly the english-dubbed version! hee!

LOL it’s like I have motivation to work hard for the Finals because afterwards I can sit back and enjoy The Lost Tomb and Hua Qiangu. The Lost Tomb is one of my high hopes so it better be good or I will be very disappointed. With Hua Qiangu, because it’s a beloved novel of mine, I may be very picky when it comes to the drama because I want it to do justice to the novel. Of course, I won’t judge until I actually see it, but so far the music hasn’t impressed me, nor have the styling/make-up. BUT if they adapt the script really well or if the actors act very well, then I’ll still be happy 🙂
IMO Ancient Sword was a very good adaptation of an ancient Chinese fantasy wuxia because it gave off the right vibes, the pace was good, the acting was good, the cast was great, the styling/make-up/costumes/props/scenery were beautiful, the music was awesome, the fight scenes weren’t bad either, and the series was very engaging from start to finish. The only thing lacking was the special effects, but not everyone has a huge billion dollar budget like Hollywood movies so we can’t expect Hollywood-level SFX.
That said, I’m hoping that Hua Qiangu could at least come close to the standards of Ancient Sword, but I guess I may be asking a bit much LOL.

Ancient of the Legend Sword has one thing going for it though – the whole cast was much younger and are all rising new faces in the industry. everyone was good looking and pretty, the same cannot be said about hua qian gu
i didn’t get into it for some reason though, the main couple i forwarded most of their scenes. the other couples had more chemistry and i enjoyed them thoroughly even if i didn’t finish the series.
the songs for hua qian gu are okay. not as epic as the recent condor heroes. LOL.

I actually really love the opening song except for the English part. I reaally like the singer’s voice and the sound of It. Sure it’s not as epic as it should be, but nevEd the less I really did enjoy it though.
