Drama adaptation of When He Comes, Close Your Eyes enters production stage

Funny. The producer, Hou Hong Liang (also co-produced Hu Ge’s The Disguiser,) is sure not leaving this adaptation to hang dry in the air. Despite not securing or having any of its lead characters, teaser images are released on their weibo, while they encourage fans to throw out names of their dream cast. It’s a good thing book fans’ opinions matter but it’s a double-edged sword. Some production companies lose direction and provide more fan service than substance. When He Comes, Close Your Eyes is based on the novel with the same name written by Ding Mo. It’s a thrilling detective show sprinkled with a sweet and romantic love story. The title makes little sense to me though; if a killer comes my way, my eyes are sure as heck WIDE OPEN. If a lover comes by, I still need to keep my eyes open in case some psycho underwent plastic surgery!

From what little that I gathered, the male lead is an arrogant criminal profiler with a super high IQ and extremely low EQ. Our female lead is an English major with great observation skills. Cue, roll eyes! Can’t we get a reverse in roles once in a while? I feel like the guys almost always get the excuse of hiding behind an emotional wall while the ladies are pushed around and merely there for the heroes’ healing journey. I don’t know, maybe those who read the novel could shed light on their dynamics.

A lot of speculation for the male and female lead, with the usual famous names being thrown out: Wallace Chung, Hu Ge, Li Yi Feng, Zhao Li Ying, Zhou Dong Yu, Li Yi Fei, etc.

I’m actually more excited about the killers in the story. It’s said to be very raw and gory in details. As of now, the name attached to play a psycho killer who chops and slices human body and then eats their organs is Qiao Zhen Yu. HOHOHO!! This genre is not for everyone so I understand if you guys vomited just now. I’m a horror fangirl through and through and blood does not deter me.

Teaser images. The English title provided by the production…. my lord.

Male Lead: I have told you before, the person who kills in series is my hobby (??). I’m Simon, not Allen.

 photo Eyes 8.jpg

Female lead: You led me from a peaceful world into one that’s exciting and unforgettable.

 photo Eyes 7.jpg

A confrontation among people with high IQ.

 photo Eyes 6.jpg

The love of someone with low EQ.

 photo Eyes 5.jpg

Killer: Only when Allen is by my side should my flower “feast” have all its wonderful flavors.

 photo Eyes 4.jpg

Second Male Lead: My assertiveness is to let you see my determination, my protection.

Filming is expected to begin mid-May. With Sohu as the airing platform, When He Comes, Close Your Eyes plans to be short and sweet with 19 episodes (in Cdrama world, this is true.) 😛 There are more adaptations from novels but I’ll hold it out until they have at least confirm the leads to write about.

I know I haven’t shown my face here in ages, and now when I am I’m going to rant, so apologies in advance Kappy >!>!>

I have yet to see one, One, ONE book-to-drama/movie adaptation that’s true to it’s source, as powerful and accurate as what was originally envisioned. Be it Chinese or otherwise. Like the last thing that came even close was MARS, and that was adapted from a manga and it was back in 2004.

And now one of my favourite books and favourite writers…. just… I’ll be here, weeping in the corner.

Also…. WTF Close Your Eyes and He Came omg are they directing some porno movie my eyes are dying I want to bleach my brain *sob*

{{Btw, for those who would like to read it, there is an ongoing english translation by the lovely ladies at dream avenue here: https://dreamavenuee.wordpress.com/2014/06/30/when-he-comes-close-your-eyes-chapter-1-1/

    For those who can read (or hear and understand, in the case of mandarin) chinese/viet, there’s links here http://www.books.shushengbar.com/?p=4475 }}

Ok, so here’s a translated blurb (thankies lidge jie~)

When you have a boyfriend who is brilliant, arrogant and loyal ……

When dating, he said: “I’m not interested in these silly things. However, if you kiss me every five minutes, I can do any silly thing with you.”

When jealous, he said: “Compared to me, that guy has “stupid” written from head to toe. He only has one good point, he also knows you’re a good woman.”

When making love, he said: “Although I don’t have any experience, my intelligence and ability to learn are exceptional compared to normal people. One more thing, my ability to observe is also very good.”

When proposing, he said: “No words can describe how I feel. If one sentence can sum it up, it is – ‘I love you, with all of my life and wisdom.”

I bring him from a lonely world into a warm, bustling city.

He pulls me from a quiet, ordinary life into an exciting, unforgettable life.

The male lead is Bo Jin Yan. He’s one of the best criminal profilers around, but that comes at the cost of…. well… everything else. He’s not very sociable (he only has 1 friend… but that friend’s really loyal and nice). He likes eating only fish (and therefore is pretty passionate about fishing.. there happens to be a lake/river nearby, if I recall).

The female lead Jian Yao, who’s majoring in English. She initially gets hired to translate for the BJY, since he wants to translate back and forth forensic case details. She grew up with her neighbour Big Brother (who’s cute, and now a cop, and has a crush on her which everyone else can see but not her *snicker*). Anyway, Big Bro taught her fishing (which plays a part in making BJY fall for her XD)

The best friend is a Dr. Fu Zi Yu.. he’s basically waayyy too nice to male lead, one of those unconditional best friends (like, in a drama he would be the second lead we would all die for, but this is not a drama so he’s not considered XD)

Last is the Big Bro I mentioned, Li Xun Ran. He’s a cutie who realised too late his love for his little neighbour. But you know what they say, early bird gets the worm.

The best parts about the novel (apart from writing style) is:
      1) Not really any drama triangles. Like, it’s pretty obvious that they fall for each other, and both are terribly cute about it.
      2) The female lead. She is smart, and very like… she holds her own. Very refreshing as a lead.
      3) The male lead. Omg, he is such an adorable genius squishy like… I would sell my soul to get a hubby like that… also… let’s just say (to quote another reader, MoonBlossom) that there are certain advantages in bed when you have a genius for a lover XD
      4) The author is very generous (one who chappie for a kiss, and also, the makeout/bedroom chappies *blush*)
      5) There’s really cute characters in it *cough*Chen Mo*cough* *cough*Dr.Fu*cough*

      Bad points:
      1) Novel is hella long (I have yet to finish it, and the middle gets kindaaa draggy).
      2) Novel is hella gory.
      3) There’s lots of twisted people in there (people actually faulted the writer, saying much of the stuff is heavily… inspired by Criminal Minds, but I wouldn’t know, since I don’t watch it)
      4) Something not nice happens to the male lead.
      5) Something even worse happens to the Neighbour Big Bro.

If you want to ease yourself into Ding Mo’s writing, I would suggest first reading When A Snail Loves (which is also being translated here, with around 20 chapters done already ( http://tiffybook.com/2014/04/10/whenasnailloveschapter1/ ) which I love as much, if not more, than this book (my babies don’t suffer as horribly in here). ((For audiobook, chinese or viet versions, look here http://www.books.shushengbar.com/?p=3762 ))

In Snail (which I’m pretty sure she wrote before Close Your Eyes), it’s less gory, and sliiiighttly less funny/witty, but both the male leads are so adorable and wonderful that you will really love it… (This is Nutella’s way of saying PLEASE GO READ IT RIGHT NOW PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE)

The book is one of my favorite Chinese novels and it’s Ding Mo’s most famous title so far. But I’m so surprised that they actually confirmed a drama adaptation. I knew from Ding Mo’s Baidu bar that they were talking about it never thought it would come into fruition. I just hope they do the novel justice. It’s gory but so well-written and entertaining to read.

I sincerely hope the actor picked to play the male lead can pull off the “tsundere” trait. 😉

Now I’m expecting some company to pick up her other work like Best Time of Our Lives (你和我的傾城時光) because I can foresee that one becoming a hit modern drama.

Lol… Nutella, rant away. Thanks for the tidbits! The emphasis on fish and fishing had me smiling non-stop. Weird attraction for REAL.

chasingpolaris, these companies are adapting novels left and right. What a better time than now to become a full-fledged writer!

Fans are already making posters for their dream pairing. I approve of Shu Chang. Li Yi Feng, on the other hand, is hard to imagine as a cold genius. That boy has puppy written all over his face. 😀

If I could string together a grammatically correct sentence in Chinese, I’d consider being an author myself. Although that would call for me to string together a bunch of sentences, haha.

For me, I can see Janine Chang or Jing Tian play Jian Yao. Shu Chang is pretty but she is not the first person to come to mind when I think of the character. Same as Li Yi Feng. He’s too cute for the role.

      • 12 thoughts on “Drama adaptation of When He Comes, Close Your Eyes enters production stage

You have such a poetic name, surely it’s no coincidence? 😉

I would like to push new faces so Jing Tian is definitely a great choice. Shu Chang needs more exposure but of course I haven’t read the novel so my opinion is fan-based. Lol. That’s what I meant when I said Li Yi Feng has a puppy face. Boy is too cute for his own good. 😛

        • 12 thoughts on “Drama adaptation of When He Comes, Close Your Eyes enters production stage

I’m flattered that you think my name is poetic but I assure you I am not a writer. 😉

I read somewhere that Shu Chang’s major in university is English, so that’s why they were pushing for her since the character is a translator. In any case, casting Jian Yao is much easier than Bo Jin Yan.

Criminal profiler.. Something like Criminal Minds, or Lie To Me? Interesting. But the title make me off.

The psycho killer sounds like DEXTER. I was sick of watching it the first time, but over time i like it. Bahaha XD.
I wonder how gory and blooody the production will go? Did Chinese ever make drama this genre?

gore…. o_____o I don’t know if I can…. I will need lots of pretty to help me make it through it. xD
