Plot: This is the story of a young Wong Fei Hung (played by Eddie Peng), who was destined to become one of China’s legendary martial arts master during his time. In the calamity of a nation, a Qing dynasty in reign, corruption spreads vast, and the people of a nation suffers and lives in misery. In order to regain peace and prosperity, a birth of a true hero rises from the soot of a darkened shadow. This is a prequel to such stories from Martial Club (1981) and Once Upon A Time In China (1991).

小淩: Before you start saying, “Oh man, not another Wong Fei Hung story.” This movie was quite refreshing to sit through. A lot of action, which I love. The film has some elemental resonance of Wu Xia (2011) vs. The Grandmaster (2013) footage. Seen it, wanna get over it, I so hope it’s not going to be a trend for such historical films. I need something new, and not necessarily high tech filming to get the story revamped.

Yet, the best part about this movie (in my opinion) is that I get to see the rebellious Wong Fei Hung, the delinquent orphaned Wong Fei Hung, who takes the wrong path and joins a gang for a comfort life. Who better to take on that mischievous role than Eddie Peng? I’m sick of some goody two shoes characters from the get-go. Being the badass Wong Fei Hung was fun to watch. He, of course, latter turned his life around to become a hero and a legendary icon (even more badass but in a good way and out of the shadows of secrecy), however that’ll reveal only several minutes towards the end of this film. That’s what’s so good about it though, seeing a bad boy struggle and transition into a good man for the long duration of the movie. It’s just that while doing so, seeing Eddie Peng with his glorious bulging muscles on top of such thrills was a bonus for me. I probably in most part was distracted by Eddie’s performance, this big bias belongs to Kaptain-A however I’m just filling in since she needs to recover from her injury, that’s because the side characters weren’t as important to me. I did drop a tear for a character named 小火 (Xiao Huo) “Little Fire” in his sacrifice.

And yes, I recognized a few Running Man China members in this movie. Angelababy and Wong Cho Lam, right? And Jerry Lee plays a General of the Zhao Dynasty in one of our current projects for The Empress of China. When I see these members in anything now, all I can think of is Run, Brother. Weird, (I) never would of noticed any of them… before… that show.

I don’t wanna spoil this good movie for you any further. I may exaggerate a little for a teaser, but it’s all good. I have to say, I was very impressed by Eddie Peng and his dedication in making this movie. I mean, I wasn’t giving him a standing ovation when it ended, however I see him in a different light now. A good one, of course. And for those interested in the Canto version, I am too, so I’ll be on the look out and will update when available. Enjoy!
