Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

Admit it, you love comic book like heroes and their nemesis.

When you don’t have Batman, and his ultra gadgets like a voice changer kit, as your ally? You improvise.
I have a super soft spot for Song Dong Il and his son, Jun, ATM in Dad! Where Are We Going?
airing Sundays on MBC. So I had to give Jun’s dad some exposure. HAHA~

Better not mess with his toys. He’ll You Up!

Plot: Hong Mu-Hyeok (Lee Bum Soo) is the 18th generation descendant of Hong Gil Dong (famous Robin Hood like character). By day, Hong Mu Hyeok works as a high school music teacher, but by night works as a Hong Gil Dong like thief. His rival is Lee Jeong Min (Kim Soo Ro), a cold blooded businessman known to bribe politicians for personal gains. Yet, the family secret becomes a problem when Hong Mu Hyeok plans to marry his girlfriend.
Do YOU need to do some stretching exercises?
Maybe Lee Bum Soo can play the role of Elastic Man next, what do you think?

小淩: It’s a fun movie and I have the boxing queen, Lee Shi Young (Boys Over Flowers, Playful Kiss, Poseidon, Wild Romance), to thank for that. Her character literally got me rolling on the floor laughing up a storm. If you think she was funny in Wild Romance then you can’t miss this movie because she’s even more funny here. I love that girl! This roster of actors have excellent chemistry, everyone is snazzy with their lines, above par in acting, and although Kim Soo Ro (Family Outing, Volcano High, Vampire Cop Ricky, A Gentleman’s Dignity) plays a villain but I can’t stop laughing when he appears on-screen; his face is comedic gold like Yoo Jae Suk in the latest Running Man. And I understand Lee Bum Soo (On Air, My Wife Is A Gangster 3, Giant, IRIS 2) is popular in Korea and lead actor in this film however I picked up this movie because of the senior Casanova, Park In Hwan, who is in the Kdrama Rascal Sons, another entertaining piece of work I’d recommend, at the moment with Seo In Guk (Superstar K, Love Rain, Answer Me 1997, *UPCOMING* Police Family). Casanova is pretty charming for a senior citizen.

Senior Casanova making love to the camera.

I’m willing to upload Rascal Sons if a hand-full of requests speak up, however since it’s 50 episodes I only have 360p. SIGHS. I want 450p but the digital quality hasn’t been great as before in both 450p and 720p (so many glitches lately). LONGER SIGHS. If anyone have a reliable 450p source then please let me know. I’m so addicted, for this one is the only show I’ve been following religiously.

Comments are not required yet well appreciated. Wishing you a pleasant evening with Mister or Miss Popcorn.

I watched this one! I’m not sure if it was last year or 2011. It was def waaaaaaay before i knew Lee Bum Soo and Kim Soo Ro. I thought Lee Shin Young was hilarious in this one, it was an amusing watch, nothing special but nonetheless pleasant just like JeonWoochi the movie

I don’t know what it is about Kmovies – the directors do try their best but there’s always something lacking. You see the heights the movie can reach but it just never gets there – e.g. All About My Wife, The Grand Heist, I Am King, Detective K (was good), Masquerade/Gwanghae (i did enjoy this one, was a pleasant surprise and now i am a Lee Byung Hun fan), Ghost Sweepers – surprisingly disappointing

I’m not saying the movies are not good, but they rely heavily on a few laughs (sometimes cheap) spread here and there, a good moment or two. I feel like they never focus fully on the movie as a whole but only on certain scenes. I will still watch Kmovies cos i know they will get better with practice and they’re on the right track anyway

Hi! I’m interested in Rascal sons too and hope you will upload it. 360p is fine for me since it has a lot of episodes. 🙂 Thanks!

  4. 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

Ohhhhhh. That image of Lee Shi Young will never get out of my head. XD I thought the guy was Im Siwan at first, with smaller eyes.

Kim Sooro and his super evil comment. 😛

    Thanks for the share 小淩!

    小淩 here,

@Annette ~ I stopped expecting great movies from Korea a while now. I even thought “The Thieves” was overrated after reading so many bloggers rave about record breaking box office sales or whatever. I think Korea has been abusing their Hallyu popularity for a while now, using superstar eye candy to veil lackey taffy scripts, Hong Kong had already done that so I’m not trying to instigate a war, even I have to agree with Jackie Chan when he said it best on “Running Man” 135 that a good script is hard to come by these days. And, I agree with you on both accounts, Jeon Woo Chi (the movie) and this movie above are pleasantly entertaining, and by that, meaning borderline average movies based on story. I had to ponder a bit when did I enjoy the last Korean film where I can say I fully immersed myself in from beginning to end, impactful, and put me on the edge of my seat in angst… drum roll please…. “Dogani” as in Gong Yoo’s “Silenced.” From all the disappointing new releases (in the exception of Kim Bum’s “Psychometry,” oh Lord, please let it be one of the great ones), I have better luck sorting British films as great and/or inspirational than Asian and/or American films.

I can only manage to enjoy an average movie by appreciating more the efforts behind the camera, thus noteworthy reason why BTS bonus footage are so popular on DVDs/BDs. Uhm, I have to disagree with you where the Korean film industry is heading, I think they’re gonna stay in a slump for a while longer, just how Hong Kong films dried out sometime after Y2K, now it’s Korea’s turn. I had an enormous red flag spike up when I read somewhere Korea plans to trend and adapt new production movies to follow Thai’s staple storyline format, you know, those mini-stories with one conglomerate theme stretched out in a full length movie. I can’t think of a better way to explain it being this late of night. Thailand started it all with their horror films then moved onto rom-coms and some, after that I watch Chinese then British and Americans follow Thai’s style, so it was only a matter of time Korean film-makers became desperate too.

@runaway ~ I’m still waiting for more requests. Hang in there.

@frea & Kappy ~ LSY’s comedic timing overshadows LBS all the way in this entire movie. I must be honest, I cringed a lot when I saw that lippy-suction segment. LSY is so brave in that screen-cap though, right? Other actresses would protest in disgust, not because of LBS or any parts of his anatomy but for potential damage to one’s image. LOL! Hmm, I wonder if I’ll ever love someone THAT much? *meep*

Har-har-har! I’m happy to see you are amused at my kindergarten PS-ing skill Kappy.

@Keane Thanks. I shall patiently wait. I don’t really watch any kdramas now because of the mellow trend (except for I miss you because of YEH). If I want mellow stories, I’d watch my tv at home (I’m from the Philippines and most of the shows are of these kind) ;P

Is Rascal sons as funny as Unstoppable High Kick?

K-movies do lack an extra something in them that would make you remember them. “The Thieves”, as heist movies go, was extremely predictable.

      • 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

I have’t seen “Unstoppable High Kick” but read a few recaps here or there, and I’d have to go with my gut feeling and say it’s not the same. Was it because of the familiar casting you feel it may be the same?

“Rascal Sons” really cranks up family value with a heavy heart and I’ve cried thrice for this show (yet I had more laughs than tears thanks to girl group Orange Caramel’s Lizzy for her character) – 3 episodes left… I don’t want it to end. Partly because the kid actors are superb and super cute. Tahehe~

I have not seen a lot of Kmovies so that’s why i assumed they would get better in the storytelling department as their production improved. You’re so right about the crappy scripts – its funny how they think by slapping us in the face with pretty we are distracted from seeing how lacking the scripts are. It just might work if the actors were great actors, otherwise i wish they would realise that viewers are not dumb and stop treating us like we are

I was going to watch Thieves after reading the reviews but after watching the last three movies – About My Wife, Ghost Sweepers etc i realised it was going to be the same average (slightly less actually) movie and your review has given me the conviction i needed to not watch that movie.

I think i will jump aboard the Thai movie train – maybe i’ll watch Hello Stranger sometime this week.

      • 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

Annette, let’s make a deal then. If you watch Hello Stranger, then I’ll join the lakorn world again. 😛 If we don’t do this, I’ll never get the motivation to watch lakorn again. So what’s your say? heehee!

        • 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

LOL!!!!!! Alice i know now i am practically a broken record cos i keep on saying i’ll watch this movie – but honestly i have been meaning to watch it, i’ve booked marked it and all but i just can’t get around to watching it. As you mentioned elsewhere i’m also in kind of a slump in Kdramas – any dramas period – so i’ve been seeking some thrill in movies

I will see if i can watch this movie this weekend and then let you know otherwise it might have to be next weekend or after the semester’s over . Right now am not sure if there are any new lakorns out – still waiting for Annik drama to descend upon us – after reading the synopsis i have become less excited about it. I feel like for two great actors they should have come up with a better script reference the spazz page on details of their drama

What other Thai movies can you recommend – fyi i do not plan on watching the one in which Mario Maurer was gay. Have you checked out the movie Oh My Ghost? It’s supposed to be a comedy, saw it on Viki but after watching the trailer it didn’t seem that good
I also found one called Bangkok Sweety, i’ll check out the trailer ans if it seems good i might give it a shot

        • 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

Yesh, you are Annette. A record broken for so many times. haha. Has it been a year since your promise? 😛 Look at you reining me in again! But I kinda get it, you lack the push factor to watch it somehow. Kdrama slump is so dry but I’m having fun with all the dramas from other countries. They’re good if you’ve seen my continuous recaps (I’m on the roll!! =D)

I checked out the trailer for Bangkok Sweety and it looks wacky fun. Haven’t stepped back to Thai movies in a while.

        • 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

Alice you’re on fire with those dramas – recommend something good.

I was going to jump on the TW drama you’re watching but got put off by the lead actress – i saw her in another drama where she seduced her poor cousin’s husband and broke up the marriage. It’s funny but whenever i first see an actor playing someone i didn’t like i’m never a fan of that person – case in point Park Si Yeon (Coffee House – nuff said), but they do win me over sometimes like Joo Won

I haven’t watched a TW drama in a while so it would be nice to come across a good one. Right now i am in the mood for a wacky hilarious Jdrama along the lines of Kagi no Kakatta Heya – just the wackiness not specifically a mystery drama, you’re not watching any Jdramas though.

I’m not excited about any of the new dramas coming out:
Gu Family book – not sure about Suzy being in the lead
Lee Min Jung – saw the trailer and her character there seems like the annoying one in Big
Gu Am Heo Joon – as much as i like Park Jin Hee i’m not feeling this one

It’s a snoozefest right now, i need some excitement in drama land!!!

        • 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

I get it what you mean, it’s hard to disassociate yourself from hating an actor when she has been horrible since the first impression. But I think you’ll be surprised with her here. There’s no hint of malice in her portrayal at all. She’s just adorable and practical. I started warming up to her in the latter half of episode 1 and now I love her! And Dylan is sooo freakin hot and cute in it. I didn’t fawn over him before but recently… woohoo *fans self*

I’m actually watching more Jdramas than anything else. You were busy when I wrote my posts on them.

Shotenin Michiru: Messed up girl (Toda Erika) and her lies, with a psycho (HOT) stalker.
Nobunaga No Chef: Light and sweet. Something you can marathon in one sitting.
Saikou no Rikon: Divorced Couple. The conversations are well-written, the writer did his research. But it can get tedious because the fights are petty.
Mahoro Ekimae Bangaichi: This drama gives off his indie feeling, about two guys (magnificent actors!) taking on odd jobs.
Tonbi: Lovely family drama. Sato Takeru from Kenshin is the son. His story is shown in parallel with his father. Nice touch.

They are all different in terms of feel. You’re right, I’m on fire!

Kdramas = True Slump of the slump. HA! Looking forward to Gu Family Book, hoping that Suzy has improved. Because I like her and I want to like her acting too.

        • 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

Yep i missed most of those dramas but i did see the post for Toda Erika.. I don’t think i want the heavy stuff so i think i might try Nobunaga No Chef and Mahoro Ekimae Bangaichi

You’re right about Jdramas and good writing, i noticed that it is quite goos compared to kdramas – of course not all Jdramas have excellent writing. But its something i noticed a while back when i thought about the quality of the writing in Jdramas, even the idol actors are not too bad. When you compare the K idol dramas and the J idol dramas the latter comes tops. In most of the Jdramas i watch the actors are really good compared to Kdramas – Korea tends to focus more on the pretty and yes they have great actors but there are not many i’ve seen compared to J actors.

Even though Kdramas are more popular, when it comes to acting the Japanese come out on top for me, especially the younger age group like from the 40’s going down. I don’t know many J older actors like i do K actors i can’t really comment on that

Who is the Dylan guy? I don’t think i have ever seen him in any TW drama

ughhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! you guys are terrible!! promising and promising!! XD

          new lakorns im watching:

gentleman series (Suparburoot Jutathep Series), this is like 4 hearts of mountain annette, but this time, all 5 brothers. first one was kinda boring, but the eldest brother is handsomeeeee!

Phan Rai Phai Ruk, film and matt. CUTEEEEEE!

Roy Lae Sanae Luang (weir from pin anong) and mai. the storyline is infuritating. dumb characters. not worth it.

theres one more but i forgot the title. LOL!

korean dramas focus too much on love…then the drag/separation. jdramas have more values of family and society in it. they are more diverse.jdramas only lack emotional scenes. korean do it so well i wonder whether someone does cry that hard in real life. answer = no.

      • 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

Frea i actually had my eye on the Suparburoot Jutathep Series – i saw the trailer for the last brother so i was going to watch that one. The actor who plays the older brother is really cute especially his smile but aigoo terrible actor

I was thinking about putting Roy Lae Sanae Luang on my to watch list but wanted to read reviews first after i read the plot. I’m definitely not watching it, thanks for the heads up – i was watching another lakorn with Mai and i haven’t touched it in a while cos of the same dumb damsels with no backbone. Mai’s character does not let other girls push around but she always the pra’ek get away with everything it became annoying

I was also thinking about watching Khu Kam, a historical one, you seen it yet?

        • 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

Just found out about this upcoming lakorn Saam Tahan Seua Sao , coming up this summer

          [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdiWUYOrfs4&w=560&h=315%5D

Its got Yaya’ Urassaya Sperbund, ‘Margie’ Rasri Balenciaga, and Matt Peerane. The lead guys are Aum Atichart, Chakrit Yamnam, and Boy Pakorn. I’m going to watch it for Margie and Chakrit and maybe Aum

        • 24 thoughts on “Movie Date with 小淩 (19): Descendants of Hong Gil Dong

annette, i know right, the first couple are fairly attractive people, but they’re so stiff. hard to feel the chemistry. im looking forward to pope couple, and james + mint couple. i love the brothers interaction so hard. thee grandma is a witch. lol.

mai is really young but one wouldn’t know looking at her face. she’s quite tall and her eyes are piercing, especially those spike brows. LOL

oh that lakorn with yaya + margie + matt. it’s actually airing next week. april 3rd. margie is dull lately, her lakorn is quite in the same range. and they need to change her short hair. she’s been having since forever!! boy is paired up with matt – should be interesting. um is with yaya….i saw the trailers but these two have no chemistry, um looks like her uncle. im quite iffy with this drama as a while but will give it a try.

i didn’t watch Khu Kam, but this week is the R week, from what i heard. *shakes head*

you need to watch Phan Rai Phai Ruk!! so funny!!
