I swear, the moment I manage to finish this recap, you shall see a celebratory dance! This drama is slowly claiming the hearts of my many followers, mine included. With its increasing ratings, I’m sure this drama will go far in the weekend battle.

Episode 1 Recap:

Photobucket
We begin the story in 1995 with the Bong’s family eating dinner. In order of seniority, the Bong’s family consists of Grandma Bong (plays by Yoon Yeo Jung), her mentally challenged son Bong Young Gyu (Giant’s Jung Bo Suk), and her defiant grandson, Bong Ma Ru (young version plays by Seo Young Joo).

Photobucket
They make a living by selling their crop in a local market. Despite the hard work, Bong Young Gyu lives an optimistic life with his mother and son. He also harbors a boy-crush on the barber’s assistant, Mi Sook (Kim Yeo Jin), and frequently peeks at her from the window.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Luck is not with him today as another company joins him, Mi Sook’s daughter known as Little Mi Sook (Kim Sae Ron). She playfully teases him for thinking of her mom as a fox-like lady, the term Grandma Bong uses. Gasping at the term, Young Gyu offers her foods – chicken! Little Mi Sook ignores him and enters the barber shop. We learn in this scene that Mother Mi Sook is deaf so they communicate through sign language.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Facing his crush, Young Gyu  greets her and shyly offers his fried chicken. Little Mi Sook quickly grabs it away and asks him, “What do you think of my mother?”

At the Cha’s household, little Cha Dong Joo (young version plays by Kang Chan Hee) is climbing down from his window. Waiting below is his step-father, Choi Jun Mo (Song Seung Hwan) holding a baseball bat. Up above screaming her lungs out is his mother, Tae Hyun Suk (Lee Hye Young). The commotion ends when Dong Joo’s grandfather, President Tae, wakes up sending Hyun Suk and Dong Joo running to his room in happiness.

Photobucket
Watching the three smiling, Father Choi looks grumpy…

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Trying to solve little Mi Sook’s riddle, Young Gyu turns to his neighbor, best friend Lee Myung Gyun for help. Myung Gyun and his wife have a child named Lee Seung Chul. Young Gyu doesn’t know what to think of Mi Sook. She wears a long white coat, has straight black hair, and a sports a smile….Myung Gyun guesses, “A ghost?” Heehee!

Photobucket
He walks into the barber shop confidently the next day. His answer, “I see your mom as a lady.” The other women whom he doesn’t know are referred to as “strangers”. Happy with his answer, Little Mi Sook pats the seat next to hers. On the table, is a drawing of a piano. Little Mi Sook dreams of becoming a pianist. A pianist gets to wear beautiful dresses. The problem is money. Young Gyu quickly gives her a handful of coins. Mother Mi Sook rejects the offer and tells her daughter to learn later when they have enough money.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
On her way home, Little Mi Sook sees Ma Ru and she endearingly calls out “Oppa (brother)”. Ma Ru tells her not to call him that. She wonders why he dislikes her, their parents are going to marry each other soon.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
At the company’s event, Ma Ru is introduced to Dong Joo and his mother as the town’s smartest kid. He’s one of the recipients to the company’s scholarship. Hyun Suk (Dong Joo’s mother) holds his hand and wishes him the best of luck in this studies. Ma Ru appears to be touched at her motherly affection.

Photobucket
While his parents are busy with presenting the scholarships, Dong Joo sneaks out. At a local school, he meets Little Mi Sook who is mindlessly pressing on a piano that produces no sound. Trying to help her, he steps on the pedal, creating sudden sounds. Startled, she turns around and they have their fated eye-to-eye meeting. Aww…

Photobucket
Quickly absorbing in the situation, she pushes Dong Joo away and that’s when the school security charges after them. He has been looking for the trouble-maker who’d draw all over the school boards – Little Mi Sook. While they escape from the school grounds, little Mi Sook drops her red pouch – the soft pouch she uses to get her mom’s attention.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
When she insists to get it back, Dong Joo tells her to get it on Monday. She says she can’t go on Monday, a lot of kids will be there! So? She doesn’t go to school. Dong Joo looks after her worriedly.

Photobucket
At school, little Mi Sook crawls her way to the front desk and timidly searches for her bean pouch. In another room, someone plays the piano. It’s Dong Joo, trying to distract the security guy.

Photobucket
While he’s making a new friend, his parents, with the help of Ma Ru, are searching everywhere for Dong Joo. Young Gyu is happy to see Ma Ru but the boy is embarrassed of his father. The mystery is that Young Gyu recognizes Choi Jun Mo, Dong Joo’s stepfather. He claims that he saw him when he brought Kimchee to Shin Ae. This means…Young Gyu has a sister.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Little Mi Sook sees her mom and takes his opportunity to apologize about her tantrum. It’s okay that she doesn’t learn the piano. She can sneak to school and do that. Moreover, she met a new friend! This scene is witnessed by Dong Joo, who is sitting on a tree. He jumps down to greet her. Little Mi Sook asks him to teach her the piano. He says he can’t because his house is all the way in Seoul. Grateful for his help earlier, Little Mi Sook gives him a present – her red magical pouch.

Photobucket
Right then, a car pulls up. Dong Joo’s parents arrive and take him away. As always, little Mi Sook is happy to see her Ma Ru Oppa. This time, he lashes out at her: He doesn’t like his mentally challenged father so to have a deaf mother? He hates her! Oh…you snobby kid! Little Mi Sook’s eyes become teary.

Just then, Dong Joo comes running towards her. He pulls out her notebook and gives her a present: his home address. Come anytime and I’ll teach you how to play the piano! Aw, can I tag along too?

Photobucket
At home, Hyun Suk is giving Dong Joo the silence treatment for giving her a scare. While he enjoys a movie night with Grandpa. Father Choi drops by to send Dong Joo to sleep. President Tae takes this moment to thank his son-in-law. Thank-you for managing the business and the family. Thank-you for keeping that promise.

That night, Hyun Suk receives a phone call from Shin Ae! Ma Ru’s grandmother claims she is dead….Looks like Father Choi has a secret with this woman, his eyes flicker open when he hears her name.

Photobucket
Instead of sleeping, Little Mi Sook is cutting Young Gyu’s hair! haha! She explains that her name is not Little Mi Sook. People slowly call her that because she always answers for her mom. She will get a name once Young Gyu marries her mother and she gets to go to school.

Young Gyu asks whether she’ll be embarrassed of him, like Ma Ru. Little Mi Sook assures him, she will always call him Appa. There’s one condition, he has to respond. Since her mother can’t hear, she never responds to her calling. They pinky-promise each other.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
We see Young Gyu as Mother Mi Sook’s customer the next day. Ha! Little Mi Sook’s smile darkens when a dangerous man enters their barber shop.

In his effort to save Mi Sook, Young Gyu is beaten by the man who calls himself Mi Sook’s husband. Little Mi Sook goes to the market and gets grandma’s help (the Lees tag along). Ma Ru sees the struggle but is too embarrassed to step in. With his friends laughing behind him, he walks away. This kid needs a beating!

After the fight, the shameless man demands money from Young Gyu. Not knowing a better way to get out of this sticky situation, Grandma Bong feigns sickness and is carried home. Lo and behold, once she’s home, she turns into a ferocious old woman. haha X) This trick never gets old. In all types of dramas.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Inside the house, Ma Ru fails to focus, he steps outside and rudely tells the Lees to stay out of their family business. Out of anger, Ma Ru calls his father, Young Gyu, an idiot, and blames his grandma for the shameful event that happened today. Grandma falls and sobs uncontrollably while Young Gyu takes all the blame. 🙁

Episode 2 Recap:

Photobucket
After the trouble he thinks he created, Young Gyu lightly hits his head against the wall all night.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
In their room, Mother Mi Sook quietly packs their clothes, ready to move again. Little Mi Sook stirs awake and pleads her to stay. She wants Young Gyu to be her dad and she likes it here.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Mother Mi Sook wakes up to find her daughter gone – with their bags. Frantic, she seeks help from the Lee family. Such a nice couple, yesterday they claim they won’t give a care. Seeing Mi Sook in tears, Young Gyu runs after her and offers to help find Little Mi Sook “together” (the only sign he knows).

Photobucket
Young Gyu finds her salivating in front of the the food stall. Angry at her unsettled life, she boards the bus, Young Gyu follows right behind. She’s going to find her Prince Pianist! This is like Tak Gu all over again!

Photobucket
At home, Grandma Bong is in drinking mode, which is when a woman interrupts her. Shin Ae. So she is Young Gyu’s irresponsible sister, who dumped Ma Ru in the hands of Grandma Bong after she gave birth. She’s here today to take him back. Let me guess, Ma Ru is Choi Jun Mo’s illegitimate son. Shin Ae learns that Choi Jun Mo will be made president soon and wants to claim a piece of his fortune with Ma Ru.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Like Little Mi Sook, Ma Ru also arrives at the Cha’s household to pick up his scholarship certificate. The Cha’s family is holding a party to announce the next president/CEO of President Tae’s cosmetic company. However, the sight of Ma Ru annoys Choi Jun Mo for some unknown reason. His wife, Hyun Suk, is happy to see Ma Ru and brings him inside to eat.

Photobucket
Dong Joo spots little Mi Sook at the entrance and grins like a bunny.

Photobucket
President Tae finally makes his appearance and thanks everyone for coming. Here we learn that Dong Joo’s grandpa was diagnosed with stomach cancer a year ago. In short, he appoints Choi Jun Mo as the company’s next CEO.

Photobucket
The party continues with Dong Joo looking around for Little Mi Sook who has disappeared. She is hiding under the table, her stomach growling. He tells her to stay put while he gets her some food. Poor Young Gyu who is still waiting outside.

Photobucket
At home, Mother Mi Sook is being chased by the loan shark guy again. Grandma Bong can’t stand the sight anymore and chases him out. On the outside, she may not like Mi Sook for bringing unnecessary trouble to Young Gyu, but deep down she cares about her, because in a way Mi Sook’s similar to Young Gyu.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
After Ma Ru is finished, he meets Young Gyu outside and is frustrated with his presence. However, Young Gyu’s attention is completely taken by Shin Ae, who arrives right outside the entrance. Accidentally, Young Gyu reveals her identity to be Ma Ru’s mother.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Shin Ae appears and teases Choi Jun Mo while Hyun Suk is away. She asks what’s the use of being the president when everything will be claimed by Dong Joo in the long run. She drops him a hint: but if you have your own son, then that’s a different story.

The conversation is interrupted by Ma Ru who demands to know who Shin Ae is, does she know him? Seeing Ma Ru, Little Mi Sook quickly gets out from under the table, causing the food to crash. Seeing the whole mess, Choi Jun Mo is enraged and tells Ma Ru to get lost with his sister! In a situation like this, Shin Ae refuses to acknowledge Ma Ru.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Shin Ae makes a quick phone call to Grandma Bong and informs her about the sudden meeting with Ma Ru. After the phone call, she overhears Dong Joo’s uncle talking with President Tae. He tells the president not to trust Choi Jun Mo and Director Kang.

Right then, Choi Jun Mo sees Shin Ae and tells her to take care of her “family”. He comes to the conclusion that Ma Ru is her nephew, Young Gyu’s biological son. Shin Ae tells him to use his “smart” and figure out the answer himself.

At home, Ma Ru questions Grandma Bong about Shin Ae’s identity. She says Shin Ae is his aunt, a crazy one who left years ago.

That night, Hyun Suk gives all hers and Dong Joo’s shares to her husband, Choi Jun Mo. This definitely is a confidence booster.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
At the country side, little Mi Sook bids goodbye to Young Gyu and Grandma Bong, accepting the fact that she cannot stay. Young Gyu cries while Grandma has a heavy heart.

Sleeping next to her mom, Little Mi Sook asks what is she going to do if she misses Young Gyu? Mother Mi Sook’s answer: Close your eyes, and you’ll be able to see the people you miss. If you miss that person’s voice, just close your ears.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
The next day, President Tae spies Choi Jun Mo talking with Director Kang and remember his son’s warning the other day. He stumbles into the office, searches for a document to confirm his suspicion. And he’s right. Choi Jun Mo plans to close down factory 1. With his weak health, President Tae wavers and hits the floor. Luckily, help arrives and Choi Jun Mo fakes concern.

Photobucket
With so many things happening in the last few days, Grandma Bong is exhausted. To cheer her up, Young Gyu sings and dances to their favorite song. This brings tears to the Lee family and my eyes! T_T

Seeing her son like this, Grandma Bong decides to let him marry Mi Sook. She hands the ruffian some money, not the right amount. And then follows by a drunk act: Why am I giving you money? Give it back! haha XD

Photobucket
Family photo! The day Young Gyu marries Mi Sook.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
Without money to pay the rent, Shin Ae seeks help from Hyun Suk. She wants to be her secretary again and claims that after giving birth to a child, her lover left her. Dong Joo arrives and gives Shin Ae the cold shoulder, having listened to her conversation with his dad. After his mother leaves, Shin Ae advises Dong Joo not to treat her that way, you never know when a person’s fate is going to change. Chills.

Photobucket
While eating with her new family, little Mi Sook remembers her meeting with Dong Joo at the tree on Sunday and rushes out. The two has a piano date up on a small hill. Geez, kids are so romantic nowadays.

Alice: The first two episodes are fantastic, quick-paced and full of endearing moments among the cast. I think I might go crazy soon as I just pick up Giant last night. Jung Bo Suk blows me away. He played the cunning and cruel character so well that it’s giving me mood swings. One moment I’m hating him with all my heart and the next second I’m crying with his character in here. GAHH! What a compelling actor!

The way this drama is filmed makes everything very beautiful. Stunning cinematography.

Ma Ru reminds me of Ma Jun from Baker, their names and characters. One yearns for the attention of his father while the other searches for motherly love.

I'm really enjoying the interaction between the characters, and the portrayal of physically and mentally challenged individuals. Looking at it from an American societal view, it is interesting to see, and the story line is very compelling so far. Thanks for posting it on your blog!
